i picked up a shiny sega sports dreamcast at goodwill yesterday for a paltry 15 bucks. I had been meaning to get a backup console for a few months now, due the horror stories ive heard from dc owners over the past few years. this machine i picked up will fill that role very nicely, and remarkably this unit didnt even have dirt in the creases like one would expect when buying a used console. this machine also boots cd based games so no worries for future homebrews, protos, etc ;)

but on to my problem, my original dreamcast, i picked this up in early 2000, modded to play imports. i havent had many problems with it over the years, however a few games will not play (out of nearly 150 mind you), but they did boot in the new machine. the games in question arent great, but from a collectors standpoint, i do not want to pull out the backup machine to play a few games. are there any games that have problems loading on modded dreamcasts, or is this an early sign that my motor is dying. the games in question are championship surfer, qbert, and silver, and in all three, the games boot, but get stuck on either the title or a loading screen... i dont want to lose my baby :(

Are the discs scratched or scuffed at all? It's been my experience that some Dreamcasts will handle scratched discs better than others. Someone wanted me to see if I could get one of their scratched discs to boot, because it would not boot on his machine. I tried it in mine, and it had no problems starting up at all.

I would suggest that you try cleaning the discs in question, as well as possibly the Dreamcast pickup assembly. If nothing else, look around on eBay for a Dreamcast with a different problem and buy it for cheap. You should be able to take the laser assembly out of the broken one and place it in you Dreamcast.

Good luck
