game axe- the pirate portable famicom

does anyone have one of these? if so share your impressions of it. are you living the dream? using a fami-nes adpt. and playing zelda on the go? hows the screen, battery life and so on. was it worth what you paid...

this seems like the ultimate portable but part of me smells a rat, whats the low down?

I don't have one but6 I do know there are some issues:

#1 unless you have a good Famicom to NES adapter, a slightest jiggle and your game's wiped out.

#2 some new in box often don't work, especially the display. So make sure you get one that's fully tested and with an exchange or refund guarrantee in case your Game Axe arrives DOA

#3 battery life's about on par with Game Gear or Lynx.

#4 the plastic shell seems of cheap and shoddy construction. ie don't drop it.

I own 2 of them. the first one I bought arrived with a broken backlight. I went to there website and told them the problem and they sent me a new backlight. the converter that came with my game axe seems to work fine. I don't think they lokk any cheaper than any other handheld. bottom line is it's a fun system, I just throw in a 42 in one cart and I can play a long time, (with the ac adaptor that is) :-D

Game Axe owner present!

I'm not crazy about it, and I really wanted to be. There are two basic problems.

1. The picture is ALWAYS fuzzy. And it's not just mine. In fact, I have somewhere a documented modification you can make to clear up the fuzzyness but I've been a little cautious about opening this thing up and potentially ruining it. If I come across another Game Axe, I'll surely try this out.

2. If you want to use it for NES (instead of Famicom), the cartridge assembly with the adapter sticks out WAY FAR, which makes portable gaming a bit of a liability. Also you have to be careful about the adapter you use for NES carts the kind that looks like a circuit board is totally useless. You really can't move at all while it's connected. If you do, the game resets. I found a good, stubby, hard plastic reinforced one at United Game Source about a year ago. Don't know if they still have them but that's the kind you want. IF you're playing Famicom carts only then this whole issue is moot.

Hope this helps!

Little FYI: It is cheaper to pick up a used GBA ($39.99) and the smallest 64M Flash development cart ($50.00) and use PocketNES. That is your best portable NES solution by far. Not only do you get 10 hours on two NiMh AA's but you can carry around 60 or so games on one flash cart.. no fuss..

Since a lot of sites have closed down, where is a trusted place to pick up a development cart or a gba game linker?

gamegizmo is one of the worst places to get one. There are literally 100's of horror stories about them taking months to deliver. Most of the problem stems from the fact that they claim to have local stock, but in reality they are a pass threw site for a Hong-Kong store.

http://www.lan-kwei.com/gbaE/ is a great place to shop.. they don't profit off of shipping. They have gone up $20 on all their stuff for Xmas, but so has most of these types of retailers.

I would not suggest getting an Flash Advance pro (what gamegizmo is selling or at least they were this summer) or Extreme (what Lik-sang is/was selling) as the maker is no longer in business and the software that shipped with them does not work and is still beta.

Video Game Depot got in a shipment a long time ago that was pre-sold-out. Half arrived DOA. I emailed them about them and they said even thought they sold out fast they weren't ordering more since they were such junk.
