Should I just buy the Jap PSOne unit for $100 + shipping? Or buy the American PSOne and have someone around here mod it? Is the PSOne easily modded? Is there a reliable boot disc that would be a better alternative? I'd rather not go the Jap PS2 route since I've got a PS2 already and I really don't want to spend another $200 on one of Sony's consoles. Thanks!

PSone is very easy to mod. The chips are 4 wires if you can soder you can do it. The chips are cheap now too.

Unlike modded PS2's, a modded PSOne is pretty reliable.

arent the Debug units region free? If so, get ahold of Assembler (not sure i that his full username) - there were some debug units in his Acclaim purchase

Yeah. Just look for "debug playstation" on ebay, that assembler guy selling a whole shitload worth of them.

do they have to be mochipped to play backups?

Okay...next question, who here will do the mod, and how much will it cost me? :D

This may not be the best way to play imports but I have a 1001 model Playstation and I use a game hunter which is pretty much like a game shark and plugs right into the i/o port on the back of the system. But then we all know how reliable the 1001 is. (Knock on wood my system is still holding up!)

Quite a few models have the port in the back. You don't have to use the very first PSX model if you don't want to. I think there were even versions of the Dual Shock package that had the port.

Yes this is true. The main thing is that the i/o port just needs to be there. I think the 5501 has the i/o port too. But those 7000 and 9000 models don't have it as well as the PS1.

No. That's the whole point of it being a developer model -- it will play CDRs from any region.

if you're going to spend that amount why not get Debug Station?
it will play all regions of the factory floor and you can even hook up via S-video.

like mentioned assembler is selling crap load of debug stations on eBay at the moment... and if you want yours in minty he will sell other batch at later time although at higher price...

cheers

So what about that PS-X-Change disc? Anyone tried one of those out?

I'm curious - the local Rhino Games has them for sale, and I'm going to need something to play my few PS imports one of these days.

Yes the 5501 has the port. I had mine for 7 tears and it still works perfectly. Mine is modded BTW.

I have a 1001, 5501 and a PS1 all modded. Its pretty easy to do, and I'm terrible with the solder gun.

Personally, I shelled out the cash for an import PS2 so I could play both PS1 and PS2 games. But I can thank my generous casino winnings for that :-D

So, is it safe to say that a system that can play both Japanese and US PS2 games (be it a debug, modded or import PS2) can also play both Japanese and US PS2 games?

I want to know if I'll be able to get rid of my mod-chipped Playstation some day.

yep althought with PAL PS you will get the output @ 50Hz so you need to have TV that understand those funny sync like NTSC-60 or PAL-60 and etc...
