I still think my old Guilty Gear X on PS2 is one of the most beautiful 2-D games ever.
I think many 2-D games as art.
Everything from Chrono trigger to Streetfighter 3.
there are very few gamers left that have the ability to recognize and fully appreciate the true beauty of a well done (and more importantly well drawn) 2-D game whether it be a shooter, fighter or RPG.
In my opinion a great 2-D game ages better than any 3-D game.
just look at old favs like gunstar heroes or the original Gaurdian Heroes on Satrun and then look at the 3-D Saturn games @_@ .

dont get me wrong I enjoy my GTAs and Silent Hills and shenmues just like any other so-called "casual" gamer.
But everytime I play SNK vs Capcom on my trusty old DC or pop in GGX on my PS2 I get a thrill out of the purity of the 2-D artform.
Sometimes its difficult for me to go back and play a new 3-D game after hours of bliss with Streetfighter3: third strike or King of fighters 2000/2001.
Anyway I was just wondering how many fellow gamers on this board feel the same way after all these years of 3-D hype?

i like maybe a total of 25 3D games,
2D will always feel like much more of an art to me than some stupid 3D computer rendered shit fest.
2D will always be my favorite, theres just something special when you pop in a game like metal slug and see the beautiful backgrounds.

favorite current 2D games:
SVC Chaos
Metal Slug 5
and soon to be Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.

Soo uh a bit confused about the topic but I'll give it a shot. I really dont mind the older 3d games. Just aslong as they have something to back up there dated graphics. I'll take an old Super Mario 64 over any new Platformer. 2d to me has always looked good, its never grainy or hard to see were your going, wich is a must for some genres.

Oh Favorite 2-d games of current generation,

KOF 2000 (DC)
Guilty Gear X (DC)
Viewtiful Joe
Castlevania Series (GBA)

Technically, Viewtiful Joe is 3D.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures is my pick though.

I can't help but stare at SaGa Frontier II... Beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds, with stubby "anime" sprites... gorgeous game.

I thought you meant 2D gameplay before I read the post, and I was going to say either Gradius V or Ikaruga, but 2D graphics? Well, I like 2D graphics a lot too, but Im not a huge fan of any of the "new" 2D games Ive played.

If it counts, I will say Red Alert 2. Thats a relatively new game with 2D graphics, and I personally think it looks better than that stupid "Generals" game.

i enjoy more 2D games. Currently my favorites are Ikaruga and Psysvariar 2 for the Dreamcast. Others like Viewtaful Joe and Mega Man Network for GC were awesome. Kamui and RefleX for PC are awesome SHMUPS, japanese tho :( . But you could consider most of them 2D but there is some out called 2.5D. it just means that the foreground is 2D and some of the backgrounds are 3D like, like Viewtaful Joe 1 and 2.

Mostly i play SHMUPS for PC and Dreamcast. Shmups IMO should always be 2/2.5D

Technically, Viewtiful Joe is 3D.

How so. :hmm: Maybe 2.5 like gamefan once put it, but its not like you can move into the background or anything.

While the gameplay does move in a left-to-right 2D style, the game is still rendered in polygons, and thus is considered to be 3D.

Mr. Driller

Oh hell yes. Best game ever. :D

I'd say R-Type Final but that's still rendered in 3D like VJ. Maybe Castlevania SOTN, 'cause it's new to me.

Metal Slug 3, Bangaioh, Garou; Mark of the Wolves.

Plus many many more.

2D will always be my favorite gaming style. Infact the only truly 3d games that i own on my PS2 are Silent Hill 2+3, Clocktower 3 and Ridge Racer V, apart from that, the rest are all 2D (mostly shmups)

so since I don't know much about how games are made I didn't realise that some of these 2D games aren't really 2D. So if I understand correctly from some of these post some games are rendered in 3D but still play in a 2D field? Not to thread jack but what 2D games are rendered in 3D?

Off the top of my head...

Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2
Ikaruga
Radiant Silvergun
...and many many many many more

Then there are the pre-rendered Sprites that have a 3D look...

Super Mario RPG
Donkey Kong Country Series
Pulstar
Ragnagard
Prehistoric Isle 2
again, many more

and then of course vector graphics... and then theres Tron
