View Full Version : Bad games that you finished anyways.
The torture is over.
I just finished Driving Emotion Type-S, which was Squaresoft's attempt at a racer on the PS2. I don't know HOW I did it. The game was frustrating. They forgot to add physics to the engine and so the cars felt helium filled no matter what tunings you did.
I remember that the game was quite expensive when it was launched....and it took me less than 8 hours to finish it in it's entirety....all cars unlocked and all levels won.
Today I'm trading it in to help pay for the dualshock controller that I smashed.
Has anyone else persevered to finish a game against all odds?

I think I'd have to do with Earthworm Jim 3D on N64. The game wasn't so bad, it was just that it has the WORST camera in any game I have EVER played.

Mario's Missing, man I was so disappointed in finding out this was educational and american made Mario game.......Misleading title!
Hexen, many people hated this on N64, but I finished it and grew to appericate it.
Brain Dead 13, many people I knew at the time wouldn't even get past Frankie. I finished it one night, the ending was actuallly decent
The 11th Hour, talk about a brain teaser, I ended up finishing the final puzzle by pure luck....

No, I think Half-life and Half-life 2 are horrendous, over-rated games that, while they added to the genre, had horrible execution and gameplay. Half-life was easy. Half-life 2 wasn't much better.
I got Half-life 2 from a voucher that came with my video card. It was free.

Mortal Kombat: Special Forces on PS. Could have been so much better.

Mortal Kombat Gold.
Mortal Kombat 3.
Wolfenstein 3D. I played this game to the end despite the fact that I own installments from the Doom trilogy which my PC is more than capable of handling. Finishing Wolf3d was more a chore than a pleasure since its bland and indistinguishable rooms become an eyesore. The lack of a map doesn't help matters any.

I've finished Deadly Towers and Jaws for the NES (although finishing Jaws is not much of an accomplishment). These are usually considered bad games, even though I happen to like 'em both. DT is a passable action/adventure title, and Jaws is an Atari 2600 game in NES clothing. (But I like Atari 2600 games, so...)
Then there's A Nightmare on Elm Street, which I probably like better than most, although I didn't really like it much either. I've beaten that multiple times. I don't know why.
Now Legacy of the Wizard... there's a game that was nothing but torture. How I made myself play all the way through that one, I'll never know.
What is it with the NES? Seems like I've spent a lot of my life playing using it to play bad games...
Jaws Wow I can't belive I forgot that game. Oh man I actually liked that game as a kid, I don't know if I beat it though.. God I remember gating really scared when jaws was on screen when I was swiming in the ocean. Freaky stuff for a 5 year old. LOL

Robotica for the Sega Saturn. 30 levels, all randomly generated. All almost exactly the same. Square, blocky robots that took way too long to kill, all practically indistinguishable from eachother. the music is ambient, whispery, but with a metallic, industrial tone. Kinda cool, if you like listening to Einsturzende Neubauten at really low volumes. No save function either, so you had to do it all in one go. It was purely an act of virtual masochism.
Ironically, I rather enjoy the memory of it. :)

I'm going to say Final Fantasy 7 although I didn't technically beat it, I got to the crater and said fuck it, despite three trips to target just so I sould swap out scratched disks just to progress farther in the game. (Ugh... long story, they wouldn't let me return the game, so I had to exchange even though their entire shipment was damaged.)
But as for why it sucked despite it's overwhelming popularity? Well for one the script was atrocious, but mostly I have to say I just didn't realize how bad the game was at the time. I mean I enjoyed myself, but having played other PSOne RPGs since (I didn't even have a PSX at the time I just bought the pc version) I can look back and admit it just wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
And it's not even like I fell in love with the game at the time. My cousins recomended it to me and I just remember coming away from the game with the overall feeling of "meh...".
Now a game like Ocarina of Time I'll admit I just don't like, but I can't in all honestly call it a bad game. Because it's not. It is a very good game, I just don't happen to like it. Final Fantasy 7 is the opposite, a crappy game that most people love. :P
Not that it's the worst game ever made mind you, I just don't happen to try and play those. Much less beat them.

I recently played through NES Rambo in its entirety. It thoroughly sucked throughout, but something compelled me to keep plodding on right to the end. Maybe it was that one catchy song that loops every 15 seconds. When I finished the game, I couldn't get that damn song out of my head.
Anyway, Rambo's biggest problem is that it suffers from what I call "random confusion disorder". This problem plagues many NES games (and Milon's Secret Castle is the best example of all time). I can only imagine what today's "lead me by the hand mamma" generation of gamers would do with this game.

I'm going to third Zelda: OOT. While I loved the graphics of the time, the control scheme was too difficult, there was no logical progression from level to level (that is to say, how you figured out where to go after beating a level), and I had to use the godawful N64 controller. I have it on the Cube and I keep meaning to try it again to see if the Wavebird helps, but I just really don't want to. Also hated Bloodrayne on the cube and Silent Hill 2 on the PS2. Hated them both for control/camera issues.

I beat Quest 64 AND Quest: Brian's Journey. I'm kind of proud of it in a sick way. o_O The GBC game is tolerable, though.
I played all the way through Phantasy Star 2 even though I pretty much hated it from the very beginning. I still don't see how anyone can think it's a "classic". Must be nostalgia misleading people and the ungodly amount of money they likely paid for it.
Also disliked Final Fantasy 7, but there's already recent topic in which I discuss that. Chrono Cross was boring too.
I beat Donkey Kong Land on a blurry original Game Boy back in the day even though I could barely see what the hell I was doing. I think my obsessive Donkey Kong Country love at the time made me lie to myself and think it was good. Same could sort of be said about Castlevania Legends, but then again, I kind of like it. o_O
Actually, there are a ton of crappy or so-so Game Boy games I put up with back in the day. I beat both Dragon Warrior Monsters and Harvest Moon GBC even though they were dull as hell. Final Fantasy Legend was rather a painful experience as well.

i slogged through the entirety of enter the matrix, though i really don't know why. for every minute of badass fights, there was twenty of buggy audio, missions that made no sense, pointless objectives, enemies that materialized out of nowhere, and lame bosses. game had its moments, mostly in busting up the merovingian's mansion, but overall it was just dragged down by so many other poor elements. oh, and the driving sequences were seriously horrible.
i remember reading something years back about how it was easier to knock down the scale of a hero's powers than to make enemies and environments to challenge superhuman abilities. the author said something like "if they ever make a matrix game, they'll give you 'bullet points' or something to keep you from enjoying any of your cool powers."

I just recently finished playing through Dragons Lair 3d on the Xbox - which admittedly is a beautiful game, but controls like a 747 plunging straight towards the ground like a dart. Still, there was something strange and compelling about seeing all my fondly remembered environments in 1080i cel shading. A classic case of style over substance, but for some reason I had to play to the end...moreso just to see all the environments rather than being hooked on the gameplay.

i can't really recall that many games that were so bad they were unplayable from the 2600/8/16 bit days. even the really horrible ones are sort of charming nowadays via emulation...i.e. Mr. T, back to the future on the NES, etc.

Precisely, smart-ass answer or not. DtR had lots of great ideas, most of which were implemented badly, along with all the ideas it ripped off from other games, which were also implemented badly. I thought that game was so damn cool at first, but it just kept getting sloppier and sloppier as I went along. The prison was definitely a major interest killer, though I did slog through it. Why sell a game on it's wicked gunplay, and then yank that factor out of the game for a good chunk? A poor design decision, which fit perfectly with the rest of the poor decisions made in the creation of that game. It is, indeed, a pity.

First off, if you're just going to repeat what Videogames.com said about a game, give them the intellectual credit and give us a link to them.
Gotta disagree with you all on what you are saying about the game. Don't like the Prison? Skip it. You'll find there are quite a few levels left. The game gives you an option to skip levels after you beat it for a reason. Yeah, the Prison was pretty bad in my opinion, but I must have played through China-town (the level after it) about 40 times. That's where the game is at it's best: Blazing gunplay, smart-alec dialogue, and pure insanity. The story was good with lots of twists and turns along the way, the bosses were interesting (while I can't say I beat them easily, I can say that no other video game had a collection of boss fights like that). Sloppier as it goes along? I could say that about Xenogears, and that's my favorite game of all time. In the end, a good time was had, by at least me, and some other people that I know. Wherefore the calling it a "terrible" game?
Because even good ideas can be exacuted horribly?
Note: I haven't played either game, but the smartass answer just seemed so obvious.
Correct about two things: That you gave me a smartass answer, and that you haven't played the games. Now you want to tell me why the execution of DTR was horrible, having NOT played the game? Your premise itself leaves the other possibility for good ideas that we like to see: That they can be executed beautifully.
Trust me, I can come up with smart-assed opinions on games I haven't played all day. But I wouldn't expect people to respect them.
