And that's relevant to the topic how?
Really, I'm not surprised at this at all. Nor was I that surprised at the NFL deal given the NASCAR deal a while back.
I don't think one company having exclusives to all the major sports is a good thing, but it does kind of make me think back to the Intellivision days when Mattel had licenses for EVERYTHING even backgammon and chess! Maybe EA is just a retro company at heart.
Or not. :P

Burnout and Need For Speed, IF they ever ditch the tuner car thing. I like tuner cars as much as anyone, but the Underground series is mediocre at best. Hot Pursuit 2 was so good.
They can have the NBA. Basketball games are the worst sports games.

Now taking bets on how long it is before EA buys the rights to curling and lacrosse.

Ea really could dominate with a console you know with all these games. All the lightweight gamers ideal console don't you think? If they could buy Rockstar it would allmost steal 3/4 of the PS2 libary.

I really don't see how this is even legal really. That being said, I'm STILL trying to figure out how much EA paid for NFL and if it was REALLY worth it for them.

Those weren't exclusive licenses, nobody just ever bothered to deal with licenses. it was Mattel marketing types that decided they thought 'a game called PBA Bowling would sell better than a game just called 'bowling'"...

I believe you're wrong. I'm pretty certain Mattel made deals with the various leagues to use their logos on the packaging and games.
See here for an example. (http://www.intellivisionlives.com/bluesky/games/credits/sports.html#baseball)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mattel had exclusives. IIRC the licenses were all exclusive until well in the NES era.

I HATE ELECTRONIC ARTS! Last game I bought from EA was NHL 2001. I have a total of like 6 EA games and 4 are on Genesis and one import Saturn game that they published, and the hockey.
I have banned EA games. Yeah I don't have alot of current gen games. Like 10 on Xbox, 30 PS2, and like 9 Gamecube games.
IF EA wants to monopolize the market then I guess I won't buy new games. Oh well the old stuff is better than 85% of todays junk.
Madden is junk same thing since 1991 with updated rosters. NFS underground is crap. improving your stereo and neon lights does not make a car faster. Sims is played out. Don't like ssx or any other snowboarding game.
Sorry for the rant just had to vent....oh did I mention I hate Electronic Arts...

I really don't see how this is even legal really.
What's not legal about securing the rights to use proper player names and team logos? It's not like nobody else can make a basketball game. And it's not like you can force an entity to license it's name to multiple parties if they choose not to.
I'm still not convinced the quality of titles like Madden are going to suffer just because you won't be playing NFL games by anybody else. If EA lets the quality suffer they *will* lose sales. Maybe not the first year, but it'll catch up to them. And they seem bright enough to know this and to not let it happen.

Ohhhh, So this is what next....
This really starting to look like a desperate act on EA's part.
Those Sega Sports series must have really made a dent in their wallet.

I'm sure that all new non-EA sports titles will allow you to customize player and team names. I also bet that they'll make it REAL easy to download and trade rosters as well. So while it may take a little time and research I'm sure that it'll be easy enough to end up with full NFL teams and rosters on most other football games.
In the mean time I'm sure that we'll see player names like Clayton Hanning or Sullivan McKnabb

I disagree completely. NOONE wants to play a serious football game with non-NFL teams. EA could do absolutely nothing except update the rosters for the next 5 years and still hold 97% oif all football games sold in the US.

Sure they might still hold 97% of football sales, but when football sales themselves have declined by 50% they're overall sales are going to be down. You think they want to do that? Kill their biggest market? Not a chance.
EA is the biggest 3rd party developer in the world for a reason, and that doesn't come from releasing the same software year after year.
(And if anybody bothers replying that Madden *is* the same year after year don't bother. Over a stretch of 3 games or so the changes in *any* sports franchise are considerable, and I'm willing to bet a *lot* of sports fans, like myself, only buy these things every 3 years anyway)

One word: NCAA.
A second word would be marketing. I'm willing to bet that if Sega had made the NFL deal that EA would still be successful at making football games. They'd find a way.

Because an online petition is going to make a contract NULL AND VOID.
Considering how little interest I've ever had in the realistic sports lineup, I'm alright with EA going insane for licenses.
Of course, if they license a cricket league, maybe I'll figure out the hell that game is played LOL
