I recently heard a rumor through another video game message board (no, not GameFAQs) that some people have been able to buy some XBOX "Platinum Series" games for $4.99 at their local Circuit City.

Apparently, this only applies to the "Greatest Hits" or "Platinum Series" games and not their regular titles.

The original poster of the message only bought XBOX games, so I'm not sure if it's going to work with PS2, GCN or GBA games. I also highly doubt it's going to work with the new DS games.

I have yet to test this theory, but I plan on doing so tomorrow afternoon.

If this is true (which I certainly hope it is), consider this tip my holiday gift to everyone here. If not, well, at least there was hope it was true, right?

If it was last week, there was an ad for any 2 Platinum Hits/Players Choice/Greatest Hits games for $30. Aparently there was an error made when coding the sale in the registers and instead of taking $4.99 off for each of the two they were coming up as $4.99 sales. From what I read, the stores were notified and most were changing the prices manually to the correct $15 price. I did hear a few people got the games for $5 a pop though.

Yep, I was one of the lucky ones...the 2 stores in my area (Philly) had not caught on yet and I bought 27 games! Kept about 10 for myself and sold the rest at cost to people in my office to use for their kids Christmas presents. I figured I'd spread the love of videogames around a bit and earn some goodwill too! :)

The day I went the message started flashing on the register screen that they were to manually change the games back, so the salesgirl refused. Then, she handed me the stack of games and told me to put them back on the shelf, so I dropped them in the middle of the floor.

I should have added that this was after I'd sworn never to return to Circuit City after I had to raise hell over a pricematch plus on the $20 GTA Double Pack for Xbox with the Gamestop three doors down.

The irony? GTA Double Pack is now going for $20 at Circuit City.

I won't go back until hell freezes over. Or until there's another legitimate $5 sale.
