I remember it being discussed before. Was there ever a list created here listing the long box playstation titles?? If so, can someone point me to it.
Thanks!!

I don't remember the list either and in case a list wasn't done, I'll add the first game I know to come in long box: King's Field (the sequel King's Field II came in standad CD sized box)
And if I calculate correctly, I should be getting a new fruit by now.

yeah, i saw this list in tips and tricks too. its the one thing i do look foreward to each month.
I'm not sure if this is the proper thread, but it's close.
I checked out a Jumping Flash! 1 auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3719&item=1951056029) on eBay today and noticed it has one of those black pseudo-cardboard boxes early PSX releases came in. That surprised me, because I have a copy of JF! 1 (bought new in 1999 or so) and it's in a plastic Sega CD-style case.
Interesting. I wonder what other variations of this sort exist.[/url]

Resident Evil, Agile Warrior and a few others also were released as both Longbox and non-Greatest Hits jewel cases. I'm sure there's more, but I know of no complete list at this point.
kevincure

Also, here's the problem that I ran into compiling those releases that came in both - its basically impossible to check on ebay. Software Etc. and EB, among others, have been cutting the old manual, or printing up "covers" for Longbox games and putting them in CD cases, even though the games were never released in that state. It's obvious when seen in person, but a picture on ebay of a Longbox game in a jewel case is tough to decipher.
Given the collective experience of the people who visit this board, it shouldn't be impossible to compile an accurate list over time. We could get a good list going just from the games the people this board own alone.

Most long box PSX games were available in both the plastic case and the Saturn/ Sega CD style cases. Sony was running out of and couldn't produce enough of the plastic cases to meet their production demands and had to scrounge around and get the Saturn style cases after awhile. Their were plenty of those around because Saturn was already dying. I actually heard they bought them from Sega at the time. They switched to cardboard because it was cheaper to produce and still allowed them to get the visibilty on a store shelf they wanted. After awhile they when they had started blowing Saturn out of the water, they switch to the standard jewel cases because they already had the facilities in place in the US to package the games. I once heard a PSX title was delayed because they was a new Mariah Carey album coming out that was hogging up production time from the same facility.

I found another one today that wasn't on this list!! V-Tennis by Acclaim. I passed it up for $10 but might go back to get it tomorrow along with that other copy of Return Fire! :D

Dp and anyone else who wants it: I believe the list I made for my collection purchasing for when I do ebay transactions is complete as to LB games.

It lists all the GH that I know about. I have a similar list for DC that I will post once I finish my investigation of cover variations.

Very Nice Kevin! You too might want to add V-Tennis to your "longbox" list. Also what about the Collector's Edition games that have been released of late in packs of 3? I realize these aren't sold indivisually but people will be buying them used indivisually, so it might be something to make note of. They do all have unique packaging and alternate disc colors, just like the greatest hits. Either as DP has done with seperate listing under their own "Pack Name", or as "collector's edition" listed after each title listing. Just something to think about. :)

Yup, very true, vga. But I use DP's list for my collecting =). The list I made is just for when I'm out buying (to make money to buy more videogames, of course).
The one item I want to add to my list is cover variations - for instance, the Collector's Boxes, and the titles that were released in both LB and non.
Thanks for the tip on V-Tennis, I was almost sure that I had that listed as Longbox, but I'll have to remark it.

Tranferring from locked topic in 3...2....1....CLICK....(one of these days I'll start an original thread, probably by accident though).
First off, thanks to QoF for posting the text list in the locked thread...the list of the longbox PSX games I need has been transferred into my handheld. Second, does anybody have 'em all yet?
Third, of the 4 versions of this list if now found here and elsewhere, Dare Devil Derby appears in two and is not in the others...can anyone confirm if this title exists in longbox packaging?
At 77 longbox titles and counting...

I think I had mixed it up with Destruction Derby when I originally made the PSX list. I believe it's too new to have a longbox variation.

I assume the list on the first page is up to date?
I just got into collecting for the PSX. I mentioned the ones I got today and I hope to get more soon.
Anyone know which of the Long Box games had Normal sized cases later on? Not Greatest Hits, but actual normal releases that came out when production shifted from using the big boxes to the new standard jewel cases.
I have two "Magic Carpet's" that I got today. I bought the Jewel version at Game Stop then went over to the EB in the mall and found out there was a big boxed one. So I bought that one too. And I've decided to keep it. Which games came out like this?
Jasoco

I got 6 more today. 4 are still wrapped.
Resident Evil, Tekken, The Need for Speed, Revolution X, ESPN Extreme Games and Philosoma.
12 games now big boxed. Bought all the EB had.
Slowly working my way through the list. 93 to go I guess.

Did the jewel case one have a jewel-sized manual and inserts as well? Gamestop sometimes makes a photocopy of a game's cover and slides it in a jewel case when they are only selling the disc. (Never heard of a jewel case-sized Magic Carpet, so I was curious.)
As for your other question, games I've spotted in longbox and jewel case versions are:
Extreme Pinball
Resident Evil (seems to be a bit less common than the longbox version)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Fade to Black
Geom Cube
NBA Shootout '97
Theme Park
World Cup Golf Professional Edition
WWF In Your House

Don;t worry. I always check if it's a clear front if the slip is a manual or paper. I don't like papers and will pass.
The Magic Carpet I got in a Jewel case is indeed legit. Full back insert and manual and everything. My Longbox version also has the manual and everything. Including the foam insert that was used to keep the disc in place. (Not that it does a good job.) I have a few Long Box games without manuals. Usually the ones that aren't oversized Jewel cases.
There are three different types of Big Box I have.
Oversized Jewel cases.
All plastic, most common. Saturn is mostly these as is Sega CD. But damn impossible to replace if broken.
The games I have like this are: ESPN Extreme Games, Tekken, Street Fighter: The Movie and Rayman. (All are complete. Tekken and ESPN are brand new.)
Plastic cases with cardboard overlays. (Ribbed for your pleasure.)
These open like the Jewel versions, but are plain black plastic with cardboard glued to the outside.
The games I have like this are: Twisted Metal, Return Fire, Resident Evil and Magic Carpet. (All have manuals except Twisted Metal.)
Completely cardboard boxes that open like books.
Cardboard boxes that open and close over themselves. Like an overbite or a box of Donuts. (Except without the window.) Sort of the cheapo way of making cases.
[i]The games I have like this are: Revolution X, The Need for Speed, Philosoma, Loaded, DOOM and Cyber Speed. (DOOM, Cyberspeed and Revolution X don't have manuals.)

Question:
I see these at local Gamestops ALL THE TIME. I'm not a Sony collector and know little about the Sony systems (relatively speaking). Which of the longbox games are sought after? If someone can point me to a rarity list of longboxes, or something similar, I could probably pick up a few rares and help some longbox collectors out.
Jasoco
02-17-2005, 06:36 PM
Just pick them all up as you see them. Return the ones you don't need. I pick them up when I see them if the price is right. Even though I'll never have every single PSX game ever made, I can at least shoot for a goal of having just every Long Box.

The only longbox game I own is Extreme Pinball, which I bought many years ago for playing purposes rather than collecting. Seeing as how it was the only longbox game I ever owned, AND considering it was quite crappy, I made a sort of mental connection that the irregular box equalled bad quality games. That's probably not true, but just the idea probably stayed my hand a few times at Funcoland when decided which games to pick up.

Well, many of the first generation PSX games may suck, but I'm sure there are a few gems in there.
[Looks at shelf...]
DOOM was awesome. Best version of DOOM on a console yet. (When DOOM 3 comes out for Xbox, that hopes to be changed.)
Rayman is a fun game on any platform. Great 2D platformer.
Um.. well.. Resident Evil?? How about Destruction Derby? I played the PC version and it was great smashing things.
Some might argue Jumping Flash kicks booty. (Don't have it, but I hear good things.)

Well, since I do see them all the time, I checked out two stores last night and picked up four longboxes. I ignored all the crappy sports games. I do not collect nor even play the Sony systems, so they are all up for trade. They are in my tradelist if anyone is interested.

There was one on Ebay about six months ago. The picture was pretty clear, so I'm convinced. I should have saved the auction.

I have Fox Hunt, and it is not a longbox game. The list of 102 games at the link above has been pretty heavily vetted, and is safe to call final, IMHO.

I figured I'd interject:
1. Need for Speed 2 is jewel case only - no long box.
2. Fox Hunt is jewel case only - no long box (there is an ad pic of the unreleased Saturn version though)
3. As linked above, the Space Hulk debate is pretty much a dead duck in terms of it *NOT* being a long box, despite the auction, for one reason and one reason specifically:
No manual has been found.
Ever.
I was involved with a heated debate with the seller of that long box case in it being a display case, and not a *retail* case. I firmly believe that it was simply a "for display Purpose" case that was 'real' unreleased case. The N64 era had many retail "display" boxes from 3rd party companies that were the real box...just nothing in it and no "display only" markings on it.
Until a Long Box manual shows up, or at least a 2nd / 3rd / 4th long box shows up, there is no Space Hulk long box case.
I am actually working on a Long Box Picture Gallery including variants. Hoping to have it done next week.
