GREATNESS

Alright guys just got me a Turbografx 16. So tell me what you guys know about this system, the best games for it, etc. I was just a kid in its heyday and since it was in third place in the 16 bit wars, I knew very little about it. Course I know more now but I'd like to learn more from you guys.

that will help you get started. Also, try picking up a Dp-Guide, or, downloading one for your cell phone. The Tg-16 is a great system. Just ask Maxlords!

You can't go wrong with the Bonk games and I'm also a big fan of Ninja Spirits.

Have fun with your new system its one of my favorites

There's a FAQ on the site too:

If you want to find out what board members think, try using the search function and I bet you'll get an eyeful. :)

If you like shmups your in it rich with the TG-16! It also has some great non-shmups... like the previously mentioned Ninja Spirits and Bonk but, don't forget Splatterhouse, Turrican, Parasol Stars and Cadash. :)

What about RPGs?

What about RPGs?

Pretty good on that front too.

Examples:

If you liked Legend of Zelda, you'd probably like Neutopia and Neutopia II - they're remarkably derivative but different enough to make the experience enjoyable.

TSR AD&D "gold box" gamers will relate to Order of the Griffon, designed very much like other games in that series (such as Pool of Radiance).

If you've got the Duo or CD-ROM expansion you've also got classics from the Y's, Exile, and Might & Magic series. There are others as well. The US TurboGrafx-16 library is quite small and leans heavily toward shooters, but the few RPG titles you'll find are very good ones.

What about RPGs?

Its kind of tuff with passwords. I believe the best ones are on the Duo. The only one I have is World Court Tennis. Nice tennis RPG but gets old quick.

You might also want to hunt down a controller extension and a multi tap.

World Court Tennis is one of my favorite games on there. Highly underrated mainly because it isn't a shmup. If you like tennis games at all try this one out, you won't regret it.

Also if you are into pinball games the TG16 has enough to offer you there too. The two best, in my opinion, are Devil's Crush and Time Cruise.

Btw, there are great, great, grea,t import titles available for the Tg-16. I forgot to mention that earlier. Called the PCE (PC Engine).

yeah the Japanese spectrum of the TG16 is way much better. Hell, the PC Engine library almost RIVALS the Famicom's.

Other than that, get Ninja Spirit, Tiger Road, Side Arms, and a CD system with Last Alert, Fighting Street, the Cosmic Fantasies, Riot Zone.

where the hell is LazingBlazers? he should be all over this thread.
tg16 is great but gettin games for it has been nothing but a pain in the ass. I was lucky to snag a pair from lazing himself, a pair from mindfield, and a pair from dave2236, the rest have been a rough road. :|
If you like shooters at all, get bloody wolf....i best compare it to a mixture of contra and final fight.

With that adapter is it possible to play JAP games on US machines right? But how is it when you have a PAL TG16? I wan't to buy one, but does a PAL machine plays US TG16 games? And does it work with that converter so that you can play JAP games?

The PAL T-16 (which is a rare beast indeed) plays US games. There's no 'proper' PAL games.
And considering the price of T16-PCE adaptors, to play Japanese games you may aswelll just pick up a cheap CoreGrafx instead.

Or get your TG16 region modded ;)
I <3 Turbo/PCE stuff.
As far as a collectable system, in addition to straight up gameplay, it is one of the best. There are about 140 titles total in the US, many of which are fairly common. There are quite a few really tough titles to find, and there is always the collection of boxes to obtain too. @_@
For the really insane, try to buy all of the japanese hardware and peripherals. That will keep you busy.

Go pick up Air Zonk. It is a bit pricey sometimes, but it's a very offbeat, zany and frantic shooter with excellent graphics and entertaining music. Of course if you have the cd attatchment defenitely GET DRACULA X. EXCELLENT game. I would also recommend Might & Magic III, as it is one of my favorite pc rpgs....although I don't know how the two versions compare. I've been dying to try it out though.

If you're looking at collecting complete hucard/CDs, be prepared to shell out big bucks for Magical Chase (hucard), Dynastic hero and Beyond Shadowgate (SCD), else it's a great system to collect if you want to get all good games on the system, especially shooters.

That is if you can FIND the game. At the time I was collecting the system, I had the money to shell out, but just could not find MC at all!

Great system BTW, enjoy! One of my favorite game systems of all time!

Yeah, normally I probably would be, but it's been done so many times. My two cents says check out Blazing Lazers. You used to be able to get it from Lik-Sang for $5.99... that may have driven the price down across the board.
