I was in an EB earlyer tonight looking at the used PSX games when I spotted a complete copy of Vanguard Bandits for $19.99. I got excited because I've been wanting this game, and I know it's fairly rare and expensive. So I take it up to the counter and the clerk looks for it and tells me he doesn't have it.

So I don't get the game and I was a little irked, but thought, well, at least no one else can get it either :)

Anyway this ever happen to anyone else at an EB, and anyone know how this could happen, having a game case but no game?

Thats happened to me more times than I can count. Usually its just over crap games, but ive had some nicer games that I've been unable to get because of it.

It happens, but if you ask nice, sometimes you can get the cases for free which means that disc only copies later are worth getting.

In some rare cases, an emplyee may see the disc only, not be able to locate the box/manual at the time, and sell the game loose. Then of course at a later date something like this occurs. It happened a couple times when I worked at Gamestop.

it can happen. Things can get lost (or taken).
Another thing you can do is leave them the case with your name and number. Sometimes they're nice enough to let you know if they find it.

That happened to me once...I was going to get NHL 2K2 for the Dreamcast but they couldn't find the disc. I wound up getting it elsewhere later on.

Not too long ago I was surfing 1UP.com and read in somebody's blog that they wanted to buy a used Ikaruga from Game Crazy but didn't because someone sold the disc without the case.

I thought this was a strange occurance because it's never happened to me, nor have I ever heard about it happening.

I still may get the game yet though. The clerk told me to come back later because it may be possible that the game got misplaced in all the holiday rush, and it might get found after things die down, so I plan on going back later in the week. If they still don't have it I'm gonna ask for the case and booklet, so at least later on like Stu said I'll only have to get the disc.

It has happened to me on a few occasions when I want to rent a game. They don't keep the games in the box, so you have to go up to the front, and get it from them. I was pissed when I found out they didn't have any more Metroid Prime 2's.

Yes. It happened to me once only at EB. Let's see.. what was it. I think it was just a Demo disc for PS2. But good came from it. When I learned I couldn't have what I didn't really want, I talked myself into getting something that cost more but I knew I'd never see again. Duke Nukem 3D for GBA.

I've had it happen both as a customer and as an employee. Sometimes the disc's been filed wrong and other times it's been sold without the box. If I'm buying the game and the disc vanishes I usually ask if I can take the box and manual, usually they let me. I mean you never know when you'll run across a loose disk, and for some titles (like Vanguard bandits) the case and manual themselves are worth something.

I don't mind when it comes to used games but am I the only one that gets bugged when they handle new game discs (keeping them out of the case and putting them back in when you go to buy them) and you're paying full price?

happens in our stores on occasion... or, you have what happened last night... someone going behind the counter and stealing your binder of GameCube games A-L... seeing your GC section starting with Madden 2002 is kinda sad.

I just tell customers EA bought the first half of the alphabet so that Madden would always be in the first slot.

I personally love buying a brand new display copy, paying retail price, and then having to argue with the clerk because he actually insists upon adding another sticker to the box before I can take it home.

I really wish these gamestores would come up with a better system for displaying games. I know they don't have enough room to keep all their games behid the counter, but they shouldn't have to open new games either.

unfortunatly, until a new way of displaying games are found...the gutting and stickering of games will prevail. unfortunatly though. most people unlike us don't give a rats toot about whether they are sealed or not, only around christmas time.

Look at GameStop. None of the GameStops around me put a single sticker (Aside from the price) on their games, neither used or new. EB is just run by a bunch of shitheads who don't actually have to put up with the stickers.

Bullshit on EB. There is a better way, EB just doesn't want to change.

Yep. Just ask Perk about the copy of Herzog Zwei listed at a local EB. They "Still" can't find it, but have it listed, 5 months later. I ask everytime just ot be an ass.

the store i work at will re-shrink the games if you want, they wont have the cool little corners however and any game collector will know that it isnt factory seal.

Happened to QoF whilst I was over last month. Thankfully it wasn't some mega rare game for the PS1, just an uncommon. How they do it I don't know...

Happened to me last week when I wanted the 4.99 copy of Freestyle Metal X for Gamecube, I thought my little brother would like it for Christmas.

Oh well, he'll just have to do with 4 games instead of 5.

:(

Happien to me twice at gamestop. Once for suikoden, and the other time for tactics ogre. I bought the suikoden about a week later (guess they found it), and snaged the manual for tactics ogre. Now if I could just find the manual and case for it (tactics ogre).

Look at the sheer amount of games in the PSX library, then look at the average section in Gamestop or EB or wherever for these games. Generally there's a few hundred (atleast in the ones around here) Some people are looking for a certain game 'just to play'; they aren't collectors so they could care less about cases. They get the game but who wants to look through 400 cases when it may or may not be there? Especially during the holiday rush, a bomb appears to have hit the PSX section and cases are out of alpha order. Stu has the right idea though, ask for the cases if they can't find the game. I snagged about 4 or so this past weekend since they never had the games.

As for the 'it's not new if it's not sealed debate': that's just their way of doing business and has been since way back when (atleast the early 1990's for Babbages) If it hasn't changed in a decade, it probably won't start anytime soon. And there have always been alternates if you need a sealed game: Best Buy, Circuit City, KMart, etc. Or just wait a week and see if they get more sealed copies in. Or pay out the wazoo for 'factory sealed' on eBay. Yes, I hate it too and more often than not I'd sacrifice my 15% discount at Gamestop so I could get a sealed copy elsewhere.

Actually there is a better way. A store that I go to very often just photocopies the front and back of the actual case and displays it in a cheap plastic one with the price sticker on it. When you ask for the game they get it out of thier storage room all complete and sticker free.

That's a hell of a lot more likely then his "personal collection" being mixed in with the inventory

Glad to see how quickly that fact got picked up on.
I asked the guy what his games were doing in the store anyways and he had no valid excuse. I ended up with a loose copy CDs only.
Which worked out somewhat because the person i was sending them too just resold them because they found a copy that day.

oh yeah, spoon, i 'bought' that months ago! i was there and they had it on the list(with about $100 worth of other boxed genesis games) so i was going through checking out to see which were complete, and there was an 'altered beast' cart inside the herzog zwei box! whoever was taking things in that day really dropped the ball. they were nice enough to give me the box and ins though(as i spent $93 on genesis crap they didnt want anyway). they may have an undocumented, messed up labeled altered beast if youre interested! And no, I've never had them not have a game I wanted when I brought the case up. All the EBs here are small though.

That hasn't happened to me, but something else did...I picked off a copy of PSO v2 (dc) off the preown shelf shortly after it came out. I got to the counter and, apparently, they'd sold a copy of v1 and accidently put the v2 disc in the case, so when I went up, all they had was v1 and the demo disc that came with it. I figured I'd take it anyway, so long as they matched the price to a preowned v1, since I'd just bought my DC and didn't have it yet. The price difference was only $10 but the guy gave me a $15 discount on the game. I still have my copy of v1 sitting in the v2 box with the v2 book...

And that was my EB Story.

I've had this happen twice at EB. Once, I was trying to buy the Atari compilation on Dreamcast, and they couldn't find the disc...the other time, I tried to buy Tony Hawk 2X new for XBox, they didn't have a new one, but they sold me the used at a 50% discount...not bad.

Now, when Funcoland first opened (I miss the newspaper style price lists). Their shelves used to be marked "Display boxes only ask at counter for availability" that was fun, because you never knew what they would have :D I once brought up 20 NES boxes, and they had 3 of the games hahaha. I never got mad because I always knew I was just taking a chance. Most of the time I would just stand there calling out game names and the "Game Advisor" would say "Yep" or "Nope". Those were the days when I'd be the only person in the store for two hours though...

Now though, I assume that the boxes on the wall mean the game is in stock, since they do not mark them like they used to. So it would bother me a bit more now for them to constantly make that mistake. Fortunately, it only has happened twice in 5 years...not a bad average.

I'm pretty easy going though, they're just games...nothing to get mad over.

This happened to me in the UK. Spotted a PC game "Star Trek Birth of the Federation"

It was a mere 50p !

They said they couldnt find it at the till.. I was irked as this sells for £30 on ebay.. wow £29.50 profit cha ching,

He said "do you really really want it?" and I was like "er.. yeah"

So he continued checking.. and found it, cause someone filed the disk in the drawers they have under B for Birth of the Federation instead of "S" for Star Trek (he only looked at the S section)

man if I had a dime for every used gamestore that pulls that one...

I think no one really pays attention to the empty cases on the wall. Normally they are supposed to take them down if it's not in stock, but I guess not.

I donno about Gamestop, but most chains have district managers, who are basically the managers of the managers in a certain area. My best friends father was a district manager for Texaco in Texas, he had to fly down there and back up EVERY week, and he made a bundle.
