View Full Version : Your Favorite Opponent from the Punch-Out!! Series

I don't know if Nintendo has any plans to extend its Punch-Out!! series, but the opponents they came up with are the most personalized bunch of guys we've ever known. Some are gullible, sneaky, strange, mean, conceited, hateful, and just plain wicked.
Of all the Punch-Out!! games (coin-ops and carts) which opponent do you like best and why?
I've always had a thing for the Bruiser Brothers, Rick and Nick. Particularly the flamboyant Rick. His only loss was to his brother. His excuse? "I let him win!" Rick has a move where he gives a HUGE uppercut and comes down with his elbow. Sneaky and cheap... I like it! Nick is the quiet one. He prefers to leave the trash talking to his brother and just beat the hell out of his opponents.

Rick and Nick Bruiser... they're my favorites. Who is yours?

Ah, Punch Out...yet another series that needs reviving. I hope that any future PO's return to the three round format because that one round fighting in Super PO didnt feel like a boxing match to me :(
Anyhoo, my fave character to fight had to be Don Flamenco....he just made me wanna cave his face in. Just out of pure bad-assedness, Mr Sandman and the NES version of Super Macho Man rock the house.

Gabby Jay's pathetic war cry of "Yay!" still makes me laugh after all these years.
I'm also a big fan of Soda Popinski...mainly because they changed the liquor bottle he was drinking to "pop" but didn't bother changing all his liquor-related quotes!
"I can't drive, so I'm gonna walk all over you!"
"I'm going to make you punch drunk!"

I liked Mr. Sandman in NES punchout. He wasn't as easily accessible as the other fighters so you had to work your way to him if you wanted to fight him. And when there, you could box him pretty good so it was a little more fun than the others imo.

I agree. Mr. Sandman was pretty cool. He wasn't as dangerous on the offensive end as guys like Tyson, Super Macho Man or even Bald Bull but it was much harder to take down Sandman than anyone else in the NES game. It was tough to hit him and he blocked very well. There were no real patterns he fell into, either.
It took more time to knock him out than anyone else. At one time I could beat pretty much every other fighter in Round 1, aside from Sandman.

Bald Bull. And of course MIKE TYSON if we're talking about the version that had him in it.

It's interesting that most of the responses reference the home version of the game rather than the superior arcade game and it's sequel.

Well in that case I'll go with "Green Vector Graphics Boxer Protagonist Man" then. It's been so long since I've played the original arcade game (let alone seen it) that I only think in terms of the 8-Bit version on the NES.

I always thought Mike Tyson was the best. To see him flash and know that a punch that would knock you down in one hit was intense. :eek 2:
The fights were fast paced and even after you learned the patterns, required some luck. Tyson offers a good replay value, even using the code to go straight there!

PO has a lot of great characters, but my favorite is Mad Clown from Super Punch-Out!!
He was a massive, obese, heavy hitting clown who at certain time intervals would juggle balls and throw them at you.
Soda Popinski is definitely worth mentioning as well.

Baron Van Kaiser only because he was from the Deutschland and he was the most stereotypical German person I had ever seen until recently watching Beerfest.

His original name was, "Vodka Drunkenski." But some excellent choices.
For me, it'd have to be King Hippo, because of the laughably easy fight.

Yeah...I think Soda is my favorite too. That game was a lot fo fun. Me and my dad used to stay up late, taking turns fighting and trying to figure out what the new weakness was, how many times you could hit your opponent before he recovered, headshots, body shots...fantastic game. Like Wordsmith said, those characters had more character than almost any game I can think of. By the time I beat them, I felt like i knew them inside & out.

In the arcades, he appeared as Vodka Drunkenski, but due to the NES bigwigs making the, "squeaky fucking clean," rule and enforcing it with an iron fist, they decided to change it to Soda Popinski. However, they did manage to get away with giving Soda a few drunken comments.

i loved the original PO for nes, and king hippo was awesome! so was mike tyson, or mr. dream at that. One of the funniest and best to beat the crap out of characters , was Narcus Prince from super punchout. Remember that wuss! haha always reminded me of punching leonardo dicapprio in the face. and then him getting all mad. hehe. I got super punchout when it first came out, lots of great memories on that game. Plus i managed to beat gabby jay in 6 seconds when i was like 9 years old, i thought i was the coolest. haha, Great times :-)!

A hard question because the PO games are full of great characters.
Since he's not mentioned before in this thread: Bob Charlie.
The way he's movinh his hands up and down and says "whoo, whoo", classic.
My brother is still scared of Mad Clown.

OK, I'm going to be completely honest, I haven't read the topic body or any replies. This series is near and dear to me, it's the only arcade machine that I actually have in my HOME (I often swap boards between the original and "super" version of the game). So here we go.
TWO characters spring to mind. The first is Bald Bull, because he seems to show up everywhere. The second is Dragon Chan just because he represented the importance of "Super" (ducking) vs. the original.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Great Tiger. Besides the halariously funny contorted facial expresions he made when you landed one in his face I always loved when you succesfully blocked each of his "mystical punches" he's stand there dizzy and stupified. It's just such a pleasure busting him in the chops with an uppercut when he was stunned like that. :D

KID QUICK FTW!!! :ass:
Okay, okay. Ye lords, I'm joking. He was scrapped in all later games for his absolute lameness. The only other one never to make it outside of the arcades, Pizza Pasta, was probably aborted for a name so blatantly stereotypical, it would make Chef Boyardee go on a homicidal rampage.
Okay, since I'm making less and less sense with that tangent, I'll say that I like all boxers for their own reasons (save for KQ, that is), but Soda Popinski is definitely among the top. His pink hue never fails to greatly amuse me, and he's one of the more interesting fighters to take on. He doesn't really have any gimmicks, but his fighting style is unexplainably odd. He's always a fun match, and his goofy-ass 8-bit laugh is a source of infinite amusement.
I'm also real fond of Dragon Chan, mostly for that hilarious armpit fart he does after he beats your ass. Plus, he blatantly breaks the rules with his kicks, and I love how his cornerman shouts in Chinese letters.
But for sheer challenge, Mike Tyson is legendary. Definitely one of the most memorable final battles in the history of forever. When I finally beat MTPO with all knockouts, no wins by decisions, no losses whatsoever, from start to finish, and KOing the big Tyson... THAT was a fine accomplishment. But I bet the looks of shock on the faces of everybody who reached Mikey for the very first time only to be obliterated by one of his hyper-uppercuts were all priceless.
But seriously, I love almost all boxers. Glass Joe and Gabby Jay for their pitifulness, Bald Bull for his charge and subsequent goofy expression when you smash him in the gut, Narcis Prince for his "dual personalities," Mad Clown for his unorthodox attacks, Masked Muscle for his blatant cheating but cool-ass hazy effect after getting spit in the eye, Don Flamenco's dance and major improvement in the World Circuit, Piston Honda's eyebrows, Mr. Sandman's simple-yet-brutal style, Super Macho Man's man boobs... erm, scratch that last one.
