I really, REALLY want to call 'bullshit' on this one.
First off, like HELL this wouldn't have been found before now. The game turns 20 in a few years.
Second, the NES can't handle a huge screen-filling character like that.
Third, the *real* Minus World is in the Famicom Disk System version. The repeating water world was put in there because of lesser memory on the cartridge version. The FDS version features a beatable -1, -2, -3.
Fourth, like HELL anyone working at Nintendo of America would respond to an ALL CAPS LETTER LIKE THAT and like HELL anyone working there now would know about it and also, like HELL if they knew about it it wouldn't have been in Nintendo Power at some point...
Ahem: "Bullshit." There.

his hoax would be more believeable if he hadn't taken "screenshots" from an emulator. maybe then I'd belive his story, because it's impossible to get such crystal clear screengrabs from an NES, but it sure is easy to get em from an emulator and photoshop the goomba in.

For what it's worth I can say with absolute certainty that that email did not originate from Nintendo's headquarters. The email address is wrong, as is the automated script that follows it, along with the general format of the email. And as Chris pointed out, there's no way in Hell any graphic that large could have appeared on the NES, especially back in 1985.

What a strange coincidence...
You know, too bad there are so many typos in this as well, besides the other glaring errors..
Boy, rumors just aren't as fun as they used to be..

obvious photo chop. If you look closely you can see jpg compression around the world but not the giant king, who was obviously added after some image compression. The sean Kelly was the icing on the cake though. :)

:hmm: who's sean kelly?
I thought everyone knew! Wrong email address.
Maybe Sean lost a few IQ points from multi-cart soldering fumes (that basement doesn't look properly venilated for such mad science...)
Either way, it sure doesn't seem like him.
