Man, it's pretty quiet in here...I must be coming up on the boss! :robot:
OK. Anybody seen or gotten this game yet? Gamefaqs says that today's the release date. Maybe a new PSX shooter is the transfusion this forum needs...

That screen shot is from the rare Gorf 's Christmas Type Darius proto.
They didn't get all the bugs worked out.

You talkin' about the Gekioh, or the Gorf's Christmas Type Darius?
So Gekioh arrived at the store this weekend. I tried calling Best Buy to see if they had it in, but I was promptly sent to hold purgatory. The Babbage's was the only B&N puppet store that had it in, and they only had had one copy delivered. So I bring the (empty) box up to the counter for them to put the disc in, and they can't find the disc. They can't find the disc!
Meanwhile, while clerk #1 is looking for the disc, clerk #2 is telling me that it's actually a boring game, and that he didn't even use all 9 continues to finish it. Credit-feeding bastard. I bet he IDDQDed his way through Doom, too...
So I don't know. It's like there's some sort of conspiracy to make sure I don't get the friggin' game.

Glad you brought this back up. I got so into doing my little Photoshow ting, I forgot to address the matter at hand!
To be honest, I've been real out of the loop for the past few months with school sitting on my back like a 3 ton monkey. So, as you esteemed leader (yeah, right :P) in embarasses me to admit I've not familiar with this game at all. I didn't even now a new shmup was coming out stateside.
Oohh the shame!
Needless to say I'll be looking for this one after the holidays. Let me know what you think when you finally get a copy :).
I got time to kill and I'm ready to blast! \^_^/

A sealed copy sits in a bag on the floor next to me at this very moment. The guy at Software Etc. said "What Shooting King?", but he found a copy stashed in the back. I hope I get a chance to check it out when I get home before the festivities at Auntie's house get going.
Twisting alien dogfights. Towering armored mechs. Smoldering molten metal. Your life expectancy here is measured in blah blah blah.
Should be a good time.

And in the dying days of the shmups forum, I posts:
Yeah, this Shooting King is a pretty good time. It's not too hard in the default ("Geki") mode until at least the second boss. It seems to me sort of like an updated Raiden. The extra modes are good for a laugh, too. For $10, I'd recommend picking it up.
The one weird thing about this game is that there's no memory card save option. Whazzupwidat?

Thanks for the update, is this one of those A1 games $10 specials, ala Space Shot? (man, that game gets my nod for best Engrish in a non SNK related game 2001.)
If they are going to the trouble to license these games for cheap US releases, why not bring over, say, Dodonpatchi or something really good? I mean all these average shmups just confirmthe mainstream prejudice against the genre. Sigh.

I'm guessing the A1 games are those black box ones? I've seen Space Shooter Sanvein in that sort of packaging. IIRC, those are part of that Simple 1500 series of JP budget games that are trickling over here.
Gekioh is a Natsume / Warashi joint, and comes with full color packaging. I don't see any A1 marking on the box. Still $10, though.
IT IS FUN. GO BUY IT NOW. THAT IS ALL.
And how many copies of that Gorf's Christmas proto are there?

Does Agetech have anything to do with it? They were behind A1, maybe they've changed it up now. I think most of the A1 games are Simple 1500. That seems to be the source of choice for undiscriminating porters.
Not that any of this matters too much. You get what you pay for at $10 and if it's worth a few spins, then I'd say it's a good deal. Damn I wish we'd get some good stuff over here tho...
PS- Gorf's Christmas, coming to the Captain Wrong Industries Anthology. To be released Feb 29th for the PlayCubeBox 42.
Watch for it!

I'll go buy Gekioh/Shienryu as soon as I see it in the stores here. Helps me aviod the steep price tags of import Saturn shooters. Even ones that have come here are still spendy! Aargh! Now if only they'd bring Sengoku Blade, Battle Garrega, Radiant Silvergun, and a few others over as $10 bargain games!

Shienryu was a Japanese shmup (shoot 'em up) released for the Sega Saturn. That's why this thread started in the shmups forum (before it was transferred here when the shmups forum was terminated). It's a vertical scrolling shmup (think Xevious) with gameplay reminiscent of Raiden (which you can play on the PSX Raiden Project disc, available on ebay for $25-35 used, $55 new).
Apparently it was also released (or re-released) in Japan (possibly for JP PSX?) as Gekioh Shienryu. Don't ask me what any of that means. Anyway, at some point "they" decided to bring it over for a North American release, retitled Gekioh Shooting King, which is still weird, but at least you know that you'll be the king of shooting, or that the king of shooting will be shooting you.

Now I don't recall seeing Agetec's name either on the box or in the startup screens, and you know they aren't coy about that. And as far as it being a Simple 1500, I think not. As I mentioned above, it's the U.S. port of Shienryu, which I was fully intending to buy as a Saturn import. See, e.g., http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1944814355
I might still do that to get to play the thing in tate mode (for those non-shmuppers, that's the japanese term for the mode where you flip your TV on its side to more accurately recreate the experience of playing an arcade game with a vertical monitor). In this release there's no tate mode, and no saving of high scores (I don't know if there was a score save in the SS version, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't). But it seems that it's being released in the U.S. at this price because it's an old game they're trying to milk for a few more bucks, rather than a really crummy new game put together with a budget of $863.21, (although that may have been the localization budget).
As far as what it's worth, Malc at Shmups Mk2 gave Shienryu a 6/10, calling it "very much a stock Saturn shooter". His full review is in the Xenocide files at http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/index2.htm So it's a slightly blodged translation of a stock Saturn shooter, worth a few spins in my book. Besides, if it sells well, maybe we will get Sengoku Blade, Battle Garegga, and Silvergun over here one day. [/head in clouds]

Ahh...thanks for that. Geez, normaly I would have made the connection that this is a port of a Saturn game. Shhesh, I hang my head in shame.
No tate mode?!?!? Arrrrrrrhhhhhhhhggggggggg!!!!!!! Curse living in the land of the lawsuit, b/c I sure the fear of being sued by some idiot who crushes their TV is the only reson tate is removed from US games (even though Raiden Project and Namco Museum had it, hmm...)
Y'know, I've always wondered how finished the PSX port of RS is. All I've heard are rumours...
And I'm still pissed that Donpachi was on the table for a US release but because this was during the Bernie "no 2d games" Stolar days, it got the kibbosh! BOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I don't really know anything about this Bernie Stolar guy, but he sounds like a right villain/dickhead. >:(
In the rumors, who was supposed to be doing the RS PSX port? Treasure? Working Designs? David A. Palmer Productions? (Noooooooooooo...)
Kid Fenris

Treasure was porting RS to the PlayStation, but they canceled the project, supposedly because the system just couldn't handle it. The port is said to have been nearly complete, but it wasn't running right.
It's almost a given that Working Designs would have brought the PSX version to America, I think.
