View Full Version : The dumbest question you will ever see on this forum

I've been wondering this for a long time, practically ever since I got my Dreamcast, but I was too ashamed to ask. Now it says my VMU is full, and I must clear out some old saves in order to make room. I delayed the moment by deigning not to save at all and playing Mr. Driller til the wee hours of the morning. But now I must know.

When it's not in the controller, how do I turn the VMU on?

:embarrassed:

I've never actually had to do this, but...aren't there buttons on the VMU? Did you try pushing them?

Yup. No luck.

if (Battery > 0) {
Pushbuttons();
} else if (Battery == 0) {
ReplaceBattery();
PushButtons();
}

What Jasoco is trying to say it, you need to replace the CR2302 battery inside the VMU, then you can turn it on without being in the controller.

You can however move/remove saves between VMUs by turning on the dreamcast with no game, if you want.

kidding :P

My VMU battery went dead long, long ago, but luckily I haven't had enough DC games to have to muck around with it. I'd guess going with whoever said to turn on the DC with no game.

Yes, I just posted here so I could make a lame C reference.

You should just buy another one....then you won't have to delete nothing.

Using the Ebay search title "VMU" I see them listed for a penny..

.................................................. ..
I have a ton of them,from flea markets etc.

Of course, that doesn't include shipping...

You might want to consider going to EBgames.com. They have VMUs for $2 and free shipping (coupon code: SAVER).

To add to previous posts, once you replace the batteries in it, you need to press the "Sleep" button to turn in on. Press the "Mode" button to switch the different modes, obviously (saves, games, clock, and something else which I don't remember at the moment). Press "Sleep" to turn it off again. You can also transfer saves inbetween two VMU's this way.

Oh, and in case you haven't noticed before, when the VMU makes a loud BEEP whenever you turn on your Dreamcast, that means that the batteries are dead.

I don't have the kind of money to replace the batteries for all my VMU'S (7 VMU's, $13 a VMU).... =\

Do you mean $13 for just one VMU, or $13 for all of them? I can get 2 CR2302 batteries for about $3.50 here.

$13 CND for one VMU, CR2302 batteries cost anywhere between $5-$7 around ehre.

i find that the vmu's suck those batteries dead in no time!
I also remeber you could hook up your DC to the web and download loads of games for the VMU, i remeber a Metal Gear Solid type game/clone

Just get the official Sega 4X memory cards for the DC and you won't have to worry about batteries. I did that and got all the data on all my VMUs onto one card :)

Why oh why did Sega build in that annoying beeping noise to tell you when your batteries are dead?

I have never actually used the VMU for anything else than as a memory card, so have never bothered about changing the batteries (Which died in about 2 weeks by the way).

I now have 7 VMU's with dead batteries (All removed) but have to endure a number of tones when I turn on my DreamCast or switch cards...

Get the batteries on ebay, i got a pack of 30 or so for about 12 shipped, they work in VMUs, saturn mainboard, neo geo pocket color, and i'm fairly sure on PC mobos as well. i still have at least half of them left.

The VMUs suck down batteries so quickly that I don't bother replacing them any more. If there were such a thing as a rechargeable CR2032 I'd consider it, but there isn't, so I don't.

stuff like this makes me wonder why there wasnt a rechargable design to them. just make it so when you play your dreamcast it recharges. simple enough and probably would have been more cost effective for the consumer then buying those batteries. its bad enough i ned to get them for my saturn every once in a blue moon

I usually post in QBASIC, I don't know why I posted in C++ this time. If it was even right. So..

DECLARE SUB DoReplaceBatteries ()

IF %Battery > 0 THEN
TryPushButton()
ELSEIF %Battery = 0 THEN
DoReplaceBatteries()
TryPushButton()
END IF

SUB DoReplaceBatteries ()
IF HaveCR2032 >= 1 THEN
RemoveCover()
RemoveOldBattery()
InstallNewBattery()
ReplaceCover()
ELSE
PRINT "You do not have any spare batteries."
PRINT "Please purchase overly expensive spare batteries."
END IF
END SUB

I Just recieved mine from this exact auction, $8.58. On top of my seven VMU's, I needed them for my NGPC's and Saturn.
