View Full Version : The worst games of 2004

It's the end of the year, and while every year has its share of great games, there are always some stinkers as well.
So what do you think were the worst games this year?
Driv3r (PS2, Xbox) - This game was to 2004 what Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness was in 2003 - fans of the previous games hoped the next-gen debut of the series would bring the franchise out of the basement and give it some much-needed fresh air - but instead, we wound up with a game that was even worse than the one before it. And like Tomb Raider AOD, Driv3r was horribly buggy. Visually, Driv3r looked great - unfortunately, the gameplay was what mattered, and that was almost nonexistent. Driv3r goes down in history as an awful GTA clone.
Showdown: Legends Of Wrestling (PS2, Xbox) - One of the last turds (if not the last) Acclaim dropped onto game store shelves before going bankrupt. Very buggy and what little gameplay the game contains is awful at best. Just plain HORRIBLE.
The Guy Game (PS2, Xbox) - You'd think that after Acclaim made a huge embarrassment of themselves with BMX XXX that nobody would dare to attempt creating anything worse, but the next thing you know, we get this atrocity. Fortunately, karma has already stuck Topheavy Studios in the form of a 17 year old girl who posed for the game and proceeded to sue their asses. Here's a better alternative to playing this game: play one of the You Don't Know Jack games and then watch a Girls Gone Wild video.

They got sued? Too funny.
I'll add Ping Pals in there ;) Not even a game... and not even as good as the free chat software that came with the DS!

There was a topic on this not too long ago.
And I must be one of the only people that liked Driver 3... I actually played through it 2 or 3 times.

Fight Club- The game was delayed long enough, you figure they could've at least made it good. The best part of that movie is that he's fighting himself, so the game didn't really follow the move, just used the name. Plus it's not even a good game.

I liked the shmup-type game play but the American dialogue in Castle Shikigami 2 wins it "worst translation award."

Has anyone here actually played Catwoman? I keep hearing that stunk but I've not played it...maybe I'll get it sometime if I find it really cheap.

This was one of my favorite games of 2004. You're only dissapointed if you jump in expecting Sonic 2 in 3D.

Sometimes I wish Fight Club (the movie) didn't have the fight club in it. The fighting attracts so many idiots to the movie, while the psychological aspects are often overlooked.

Actually, they let you use Jack and Tyler, but of course it didn't resemble them.

I thought Amazing Island was really slow (sotp with the dialouge already) and barely had any play value.
It's far from the worst of this year I bet but I liked it the least of this year.

Well, first of all, Sonic Heroes came out in 2003. Second, I also hated Sonic Heroes, and don't think there has been a decent Sonic game since Sonic Adventure (though Sonic Advance 3 has its moments). It's just not...Sonic. At all. Sonic isn't about running for five seconds, stopping, punching a robot, running more, stopping, switching characters, flying, etc. etc. etc. Sonic is about running really fast and collecting rings. My hatred, and I'd imagine the hatred shared by others, has nothing to do with nostalgia. It's just a bad game, man.

First off, no it didn't. Sonic Heroes came out in early January for GameCube and late January or early February, I should know, I was looking forward to it greatly.
Oh and Sonic Heroes sucked period, I wasn't expecting anything out of it, I just wanted a fun game, like fun I've had in both Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 (some of the best games ever). I didn't care if it had adventure elements or not, I just wanted a fun game, which I have come to know from Sonic Team. It didn't though, and all I got was $50 worth of crappy animations and a barrel of glitches.
Biggest let down ever.

Are you sure about that? I played the XBox version in November of 2003, I even included my experience in an article dated at the time.

Your both right in a way. The Xbox version was released first, while the gamecube and PS2 versions coming out a few months later.

What are you guys talking about? Sonic Team and SEGA decided to release it on GameCube first because of its high success with the Sonic games, so they figured they deserved first exclusivitity.
Straight from IGN
GCN - January 6, 2004
Xbox - January 27, 2004
PS2 - January 27, 2004

Sonic Heroes was released for the PC last month, I bought it at full 19.99 retail price.
Also bought Sonic Heroes for GCN release day for full price as well.
I hate it that no one really dug it, but it's FAR from the WORST of 2004....it rocks in my book though! :D And that's all that really matters.

Funny how you say it has nothing to do with nostalgia, but your comments all reflect on how the game isn't like older Sonics...

With the exception of just a few stages, Sonic 1 is a rather slow-paced game. It basically IS your description of Sonic Heroes (besides the switching characters and flying part). So yeah... that's nothing new for the Sonic series. ;P

Really? I didn't think Sonic Adventure 1 was slow paced...now Sonic Heroes the only problem I had was switching characters all the time just to do anything

I too, enjoyed sonic heroes. Whatever. :/
Anyway, my vote goes to Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Take a brilliant game (Sands of time), rape it of its soul and integrity, and you've essentially got Warrior Within. God, I can't get over how much that game dissapointed me. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
Arrrgh. And I paid full price for it too.... It hurts.

Only if you weren't any good at it... like me... I would stop a lot and explore the levels at my own pace but you could also "fly" through them if you were careless or simply good enough to do so.

I was actually talking about Sonic the Hedgehog 1, the very first game of the series. The water area is so slow-paced that it drove me insane. The lava area, while fun, is really slow too when you gotta wait for blocks to float across the lava and such. Good game, but overall not especially fast.

Ohhh yeah I agree with you 100% on that one, the original water level in Sonic 1 was a bitch...especially Act 3....and then again in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3...did you ever have trouble right before the exit? just a few jumps...but then there's that last bubble you must catch before you reach it.
Have you played the Japanese verison of Sonic 1? the water levels look alot different

Here's a few more that come to mind:
Bad Boys: Miami Takedown (PS2, Xbox, GC) - I haven't played it personally, but it got some pretty bad reviews. Has anyone on DP spent some time with the game?
Goldeneye: Rogue Agent (PS2, Xbox, GC) - Another one I haven't played, but I've seen disappointing and bad reviews. Like Driv3r, Goldeneye was highly anticipated, but turned out to be severely disappointing.
Catwoman (PS2, Xbox, GC) - Awful game based on an awful movie. Along with Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, it's proof that EA doesn't always "Challenge Everything."
Also, I haven't seen any GBA games mentioned yet, and I know that the GBA had to have saw its share of stinkers.
