I was surprised to see Metroid Zero Mission in the list, but of course, the #1 entry in the list is a no-brainer... :D

I knew it was going to be the ol' KD, but how can that be a sleeper if everyone is talking about it?

It's a sleeper because no one expected it to become a hit.

Katamari has practically hit mainstream, you know like Pink Shirts, its dorky but it's cool.

It's a sleeper when it's released to little fanfare but becomes big threw word of mouth.. or is that cult classic? hmm..

It was nominated on Spike TV's video game awards (I forget what category).

I've heard it mentioned by people who aren't even into gaming, and it also got a mention in either NYT or Time recently (can't remember which). That's pretty bigtime for a video game that isn't Madden, Halo, or GTA.

"Sleeper" is one of the most commonly misused terms, like, ever. It does not mean a movie/game/book/album is enjoyed by a rabid fan following but not the mainstream. It's not something that is low budget or for some other reason not expected to be "big", and it is.

A sleeper sleeps. It is pretty much unnoticed on its initial release. Months pass until the item is finally discovered. And then it's a big hit, thus the original term "sleeper hit".

Perfect example of a sleeper hit = Appetite for Destruction. The album was in record stores over a year before people began to buy it.

I don't know if the author of the article has ever actually played Gradius V, but the collision detection is extremely forgiving. And Metroid Zero Mission doesn't belong on the list, and you could probably argue Katamari Damacy doesn't either.

Sure, none of these games are talked about as much as Halo 2 or GTA:San Andreas, but to imply these are games people "never played" is a little much.

A cult classic has a small but devoted following; thus, a cult!

Too bad the game industry hasn't really organized itself to take advantage of sleeper hits. They expect everything to sell quickly within the first four weeks of being on the shelves, or they dump it and try to cut their losses.

More sleeper hits = better games, IMO.

Not much of a choice. There are so many games, and so many of them good ones, coming out so fast, that you need to sell them within the first month or things drop off sharply.

When I bought a second copy of KD as an Xmas gift. The Gamestop guy asked about the game, since it had been selling well...

I have 3 out of the 10 games BTW :)

Let it be known..... I HATE PINK SHIRTS!!!!!

Also why would Metroid Prime be a sleeper hit? Last time I checked Metroid was cool....
