Ok...picked up Gungrave for PS2. I read the reviews...everyone hated it, and whatnot, but I coudln't pass it up brand new for the price I got it. It showed up today and I popped it in and...WOW!

I got it for the character designs by the guy who did Trigun (the designs for the game are AWESOME btw!), and because it's a mindless shooter, and it IS that! It's frantic, hectic, and non-stop action with GREAT music and pretty good graphics. The interface is decent, but not stunning, but most importantly..the game is FUN!!!

I have to say, I sat down and played the first level and had this big-ass grin on my face the whole time...and that's what gaming is REALLY about! Gungrave is far from perfect, but it reminds me of how frantic Contra was the first time I played it. I'm constantly slamming on the buttons to play it, just like an old NES game and totally unlike most modern games.

It's basically like playing a shmup, but with people and guns in 3D instead of ships and aliens in 2D. The main guy moves really slow, but it doesn't matter cause he can take hits easy on normal. It's a cool game, and if you're up for mindless fighting and killing that's nonstop, plus a kinda cool storyline...this is a game to get. Don't know if I'd pay top dollar for it, but for what I paid, it's DEFINITELY worth it! :)

Gungrave's a lot of fun in the old blast-'em-up vein, but it's also rather short. I rented the game and managed to plow through the whole thing in about two hours. I enjoyed those two hours immensely, although I decided not to buy Gungrave until its price drops a bit.

And I agree that Yasuhiro Nightow's designs are awesome. I look forward to seeing them again in the Gungrave TV series.

I can always look at a pro review for a game and tell if I'm going to like it or not. Not by them giving it a good score or praising thing, but by if they complain about certain things. If I see "mindless blasting" or something to that effect, I know I'm gonna like it. "It's too short" usually means it's an old school quarter muncher designed to be played (and finished) on one credit. (Continues are for the weak :))

You've pretty much confirmed what I though about this game maxlords.

Indeed... it's much more fun mastering a game with one continue than to blast through it once and go "yeah, finished it".

Oh, and sorry for OT-ing. Naughty me. :?

True, but only the best shooters inspire me to take the one-credit challenge. Mediocre offerings like Giga Wing don't really deserve the attention.

And you might actually be able to finish Gungrave on one credit with your first try, Cap'n. From what I recall, the last two bosses were the only parts that gave me any real trouble.

He he :) From another forum I frequent...the seller was very cool! I was totally impressed. Guess he must not have liked it...I love it :)
