Ok, what I'm talking about is Multiplatform games. More specifically, games that are available both on the XBOX and PS2. (I don't really care about the damn GameCube)

Typically, a game will come out on the PS2, and then later come to the XBOX, or it might come to the PS2 and XBOX (and Cube) simultaneously. Well, usually the XBOX version is the best version available, as long as you don't hate the XBOX controller. Typically it has better graphics and better sounds. Sometimes dramatically better graphics and sounds.

This might be more apparent to those of us with HDTV's and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound systems.

Anyways, usually the XBOX version is the better version to play, when it comes to games available on both the PS2 and XBOX.

But what I'm trying to find are PS2 games that are actually superior to their XBOX cousins. And not just slightly better because the controls are more natural with the PS2 controller. I'm talking about significantly better. A game that for whatever reason, the PS2 version is just much better than the XBOX version, despite the fact that XBOX versions usually have improved sound and visuals.

I would give an example, but I'm really out of the loop when it comes to PS2 games. I haven't owned a PS2 since October 2001. I just got one a few weeks ago, so I'm trying to figure out what PS2 games to check out. I have a XBOX and a Cube, so if there is a version available on the XBOX and Cube, and it's better than the PS2 version, then I'm not really interested in it. But I'm thinking there must be a few PS2 games out there, that actually are the best version when compared with their XBOX and Cube cousins.

I can't think of one offhand (I own both, so I'm not being a hater). The Xbox version will usually have better graphics, shorter load times and/or online. If there's a Xbox and PS2 version of a game, I'll go for the Xbox version.

I agree. I normally would get the XBOX version too. But I have to imagine that there has to be some multiplatform games that are better on PS2?

There at least has to be some where the controls maybe feel more natural or instinctive or something, if nothing else.

Right?

Or when it comes to multiplatform games, always get the XBOX version?

On a side note, in Game Informers review of Need For Speed 2, they said that the XBOX version looked and sounded the best, but that the sensation of speed was a little better on PS2 and Cube.

Anybody agree with that?

Still even in that case, I would go with the XBOX version, because I'm such a Graphics and Dolby Digital 5.1 in game Whore.

i would also have to add that while there are small improvements in Xbox versions over PS2 games, i have seen very few examples where the Xbox version was dramatically better than the PS2 (the only immediate example that comes to mind is sega soccer slam)

I take it you haven't seen the PS2 version of Splinter Cell then?

I've seen two clear examples.

The original Spy Hunter, and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2. In both cases the Xbox version has choppy graphics/poor framerates. Not sure why this is but it's very obvious.

Other than that I can't think of anything that's even close.

I have wracked my brains and even had a wee look around the shop to see if anything jumped out. I can't think of a single game that I've played that isn't better on the Xbox (or the 'Cube for that matter - except Megaman Anniversary...). Sorry.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2

This is so true. The X-Box version is inferior to the much better PS2 version. There are just so many things missing from the X-Box version, and it seems the PS2 version runs better as well.

Damn, why do I only own the X-Box version then?

I like the controls better for the PS2 versions of GTA 3/VC, but the Xbox has better graphics, much shorter load times and the ability to use imported songs.

I was going to say Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 also.

From what I understand the PS2 version was developed by EA Canada/Black Box and the Xbox and GC versions were developed by the EA Seattle which was shut down shortly after the release of the game.

If I remember correctly the PS2 version is also different from the Xbox and GC versions. For example, the PS2 version has that cool flaming zoom ahead camera and the Mustang doesn't have a flame paint job.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Xbox version of MGS2 supposed to have framerate problems or somesuch?

there's some slowdown, but nothing that makes it dramatically worse than the PS2 game

The Xbox version of Dynasty Warriors 3 was worse than the PS2 one. More slowdown, bad popup, etc. PS2 one is WAY better.

I've got one: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The Xbox version was developed by newbies WXP, while the PS2 version was developed by Surreal Software (The Suffering, Drakan, etc.). My reviews (http://xbox.vgf.com/reviews/lotrfellow/index.htm and http://ps.vgf.com/reviews/lotrfellow/index.htm) explain why the PS2 version is better, but basically it boils down to a few key gameplay differences and better art design. I scored the PS2 version a 7.7 and the Xbox version a 5.6.

If I remember correctly, the PS2 version of whiplash actually has better graphics and controls compared to the xbox version.

comparing PS2 with XBOX is just wrong.. PS2 came out much earlier than XBOX, which means it have weaker hardware than XBOX. So grafix wise xbox is better of course, because its newer. Maybe like comparing a 486 dx2 with a pentium 200mmx? ;) I dont care about grafix. Doesnt matter if a game got damn good gfx and sound if the gameplay sux.

Wow, deja vu.

I seem to remember this exact same arguement a few years back but that one was comparing the PS2 and the Dreamcast.

I would rather have have the PS2 version of some of the sports games than the XBOX versions of the same, because now that I finally started some 'online' gaming, I like it being FREE as opposed to paying a monthly service fee. The graphics differences aren't that great IMO. I still prefer to go with the game that has the most additional bonus material, or features. If an XBOX and PS2 game are the same, but the PS2 has online capabilities...I'll go for the PS2. If the games are identical in every way, I'll go for the XBOX.

still, the dreamcast is better than the ps2 graphically.

From the reviews it seems that mavel vs capcom 2 is a lot better for ps2 then xbox. ign gave the one for ps2 something in the 8's and gave the one for xbox a 3.9 (i think)
i haven't played either because I have it for dreamcast

As for the Dreamcast being better visually, actually that is true to a point.

In fact, I got a PS2 the day it was released, had to spend the night in the rain in front of a Target store to get it. I was super hyped on the PS2, and I forced myself to like it, but after awhile I came to understand that the PS2 was pretty crappy from a visual standpoint. Of course this was back in 2000 and early 2001.

Every Dreamcast game that I was playing was in 480p progressive scan, and they looked absolutely gorgeous. While all the PS2 games that I were playing were jaggie city to the extreme.

After some time went by, certainly developers learned to squeeze every little bit of juice out of the PS2, and now we have games like Killzone that look very close to being a top of the line XBOX game.

I doubt that the Dreamcast could ever do Killzone.

But if the Dreamcast was the dominating platform, I think it could have held it's own for quite some time.

I think that the Xbox version of MvC2 received an unfavourable rating because the developers neglected to include Xbox Live support. No one cared about the fact that the PS2 version of the game lacked online features since very few PS2 games support online play to begin with (I wound up dissatisfied with my purchase of a PS2 network adapter because I was optimistic and predicted otherwise).

I cant think of anything... Probably because I buy all multi-platform games only for the Xbox and dont play them for the PS2 first.

Yes, Im a biased bastard. :D

I can't think of any. I always tend to choose the version I like the controls of better. Ie, FPS games I prefer to have on the PS2...

However, I did choose Broken Sword III for Xbox for no apparent reason.

Then there are games with console specific exclusives.

Obviously the PS2 and Xbox are better if you want to play online (Cos let's face it, who honestly has a Cube BB adapter?)

And certain games (Like Tony Hawk) have features specific to console. PS2 has the eye toy feature, and the Xbox has the jukebox feature. Also the Xbox versions tend to have less pop up of background, and also have extra's (Ie, Tony Hawk III has an extra level!)

Also, racing games tend to utilise the jukebox feature - Play your own music in the game!!!

The Cube is really only good for first party Nintendo games, so I tend to only have to choose between a PS2 version or Xbox version. Besides, I hate the Cube controller.

Usually I weigh up the pro's and cons of each version, then choose whichever I feel happy with. Price doesn't even come into it. If the Xbox one was clearly better and full price, and the PS2 one was a fiver i'd still get the Xbox one.

Look no further than Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2. The XboX version doesn't even begin to come close. Not even in the same league.

The XboX got the old Cube version. The PS2 got the Hardcore Edition. Redesigned graphics with FAR more detail and animation, more tracks, more cars and a souped up tenacious AI. I won't play anything else.

The difference between the XboX and the other systems isn't always as great as you may think that it is. Once upon a time when they used to do special XboX builds, yes. But lately, no.

There is a collector's edition of this year's Madden for PS2 with some bonuses, but I don't think that even counts since the CE might be considered a different game.

I think another reason MvC2 received a bad rating was because it came out later than the PS2 version and of course much later than the Dreamcast version. By then it was a 3-year old game. MGS2: Substance for Xbox got a lower score than the PS2 MGS2 despite the bonuses that Substance adds just because the main game was a year old. I also noticed that the PS2 Substance got a lower score than the original MGS2 for PS2, again because the game was old.

I think that a game's age is a lousy factor to hold against it. 'Oooh, Sonic the Hedgehog is more than 10 years old, and since we're livin' in 2K5, that means that I should give it a terribly low score!'
