I recently placed my Game Boy color on eBay...wanting to buy a handheld system with a back or side lit screen, i did quite a bit of homeword on the subject before i made a decision...the systems i found that were either back lit or sidelit were...

Sega Nomad
Sega Genesis
Game Boy Advanced SP
Atari Lynx
Nintendo DS
Sony PSP

now the actual question...does anybody know if their are any other sidelit or backlit handheld systems besides those 5...or any other sites to buy a nomad for under $50 besides eBay?

Nomads typically go for a bit more than that, and the Nomad is a portable version of the sega genesis, so all genesis games are played on the Nomad.

Gameboy light (A japanese gameboy pocket with a backlight) exists, but on top of the ones you mentioned, no others come to mind.

Isn't the NEC Turbo Express backlit?

And the Virtual Boy sorta, kinda fits in with this group too! :P

Am I going to have to be the one to bring up the Game.com?
One of it's later models was backlit.

I just recently got a Lynx after years of saying no, and buddy, I'm seriously impressed. The screen is bright and clear, and some of the games like Warbirds and Zarlor Mercenary stand up with the very best handheld gaming has to offer. Excellent!

If you can get a deal on one of those, definitely go for it. The majority of games are quite affordable.

I also like the Nomad quite a bit, if you are a Genesis gamer, you've already got a great library that you can re-experience as portable.
They can be pricey, though, like Vectorman said.

I like the Lynx as well but if you want the most bang for your $50 the GBA SP is the way to go. Plus I assume you have some GB and GBC games left over so you don't have to start from scratch.

this goes against what you are trying to get but one of my favorite hand helds is the Neo Geo Pocket its not backlit but its got some great games and you can still buy them new for like $30 on amazon.com

GP32 comes in both front-lit and back-lit versions, as well as the older non-lit version.

yes, Metal Slug is great and the Neo Geo Pocket also has a bunch of great fighting games and a great card battle game.

the Game Park 32 for us in the US is mostly good for emulation and I would add the N-Gage to that list as well.

I would still go with the GBA SP as far as getting a new handheld. Their are a bunch of great games. The Lynx is cool but I've only found a handful of games that I really like.

Personally with that amount of cash on hand I would also go with a Gameboy Advance SP. That piece of hardware was the best $50 I have ever spent on a handheld. So far anyway.. Till the DS starts to spit out a few more titles. :)

I found a Nomad at Game Crazy for $45 a month or so back.

Nice find, SkiDragon! Better than eBay prices.

Well, I'd go and say that if you're not a hardcore gamer, go with that GBA. For myself, I wouldn't buy a GBA simply because the DS is starting to squeeze it (and I already see a game I want on the DS), and I've already got a Super Game Boy and a Game Boy Player, and use both now and then. I'd rather get a handheld that I can't already play on my television (where I'd rather be playing games anyway).

Also with a Gp32 there is an endless (well not exactly) amount of consoles you can emulate!
