View Full Version : Ok.. another dumb FF question..

.. which I'm sure has been asked before; but I've just spent the last four hours reading countless reviews (and the online rarity guide); and trying to figure out how this WHOLE Final Fantasy domestic/Japanese numbering thing goes that my eyes are starting to bleed.

So I'll just throw out a hypothetical scenario (well.. not really.. or I wouldn't be asking this):

OK.. if I have FF1 for the NES; FF II & III for the SNES; and lastly FF7-9 for the PSX (Uhm.. got X & X-2 too.. but not XI; as I don't do online gaming.. dial-up.. 'ya know).. then what PSX titles do I need to get the last three previously unreleased (domestically.. it is three.. right? Man this is SO confusing) games here in the US and now.. I am assuming ported and localized to PSX titles.

I THINK what I need is the US ports of the Japanese FF2, 3 & 5.. yes? no?
(My head hurts.. is there a "Scanner" nearby?.. something's gonna' explode).

..anyway.. if you can figure out what I'm trying to ask or get at.. you're much smarter than I. Of course.. I'm also assuming what with the Anthology, Chronicles and Origin releases.. ALL of the games are available in English by now.. but then again..

If I remember correctly, FF3 isn't officially out in English yet, but it's supposed to be coming out for the GBA or the DS soon, one of the two.

2 is on FF Origins and 5 is on FF Anthology in case anyone was wondering. :)

You do not have FFII, FFIII, and FFV.

FFII is on Final Fantasy Origins for the PS1.

FFV is on Final Fantasy Anthology for the PS1.

FFIII has never had a US release. It will, though, be released on the DS sometime.

Actually, to make things worse...

SNES Final Fantasy II = Final Fantasy IV EASY
PSX Final Fantasy IV (Chronicles) = Final Fantasy IV HARD

There were two versions released in Japan; a kids one, and the harder one. We got the more difficult one on the Chronicles Disk.

So basically....if you want every last one, it will look like this:

Final Fantasy I (original) on NES
Final Fantasy I + II on PSX Origins
Final Fantasy III on upcoming DS/GBA
FInal Fantasy IV Easy on SNES FF2
Final Fantasy IV Hard on PSX FF Chronicles
Final Fantrasy V + VI on PSX FF Anthology
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, on PSX

The translations for VI were redone on the PSX anthology, so if you want a more 'adult' version of the story, play the Anthology one as well.

You can also find an updated version of Final Fantasy 2 (J) on the new GBA game, Dawn of Souls (Final Fantasy 1 and 2).

And yes, there will finally be a release of Final Fantasy 3. It's planned for the Nintendo DS.

In fact, I'll do my best here to list them all, and what systems they are available here. I'll put the Japanese release numbers, and how they are available in the states.

FF1: Final Fantasy (NES), Final Fantasy Origins (PSX), Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls (GBA)

FF2: Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls (GBA), Final Fantasy Origins (PSX)

FF3: Soon on the DS, originally for the NES in Japan

FF4: (FF2 on the SNES, Easy Mode) Final Fantasy Chronicles as FF4

FF5: Final Fantasy Anthology as FF5

FF6: Final Fantasy 3 (SNES), Final Fantasy Anthology as FF6

FF7: Final Fantasy 7 (PSX, PC) and will probably get remade 100 times unless there is a plague that kills fanboys.

FF8: Final Fantasy 8 (PSX)

FF9: Final Fantasy 9 (PSX)

and then X, X-2, and if you count XI....

I should point out that owning the original SNES games that the PSX Collection/Anthology have is probably a bit better. The main reason for this is the loading times. It's pretty sad having to wait in Final Fantasy 4 for a fight. I mean, come on, the graphics are not that strong, can't we consider pre-loading a little bit? The carts, of course, don't have that problem.

Psst....use fast loading for your PS2. REALLY helps with Anthology and Collection. ;)

Also -- FF8 also got a PC port, just like FF 7 did, and FF XI is out for both PC and PS2.

FF XII will be out for the PS2.

And then there are the spinoffs, like Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the GBA, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES, Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 for the GB, and Final Fantasy Adventure for the GB (re-released as Sword of Mana for the GBA). The portable games, though, are not 'real' Final Fantasy games.

I'd agree that the Final Fantasy Legend games are not real FF games. Especially considering that they were developed by Sunsoft.

In fact, Final Fantasy Legend was my first RPG. What a drag. If it weren't for getting Dragon Warrior for free with Nintendo Power, I might have ditched video games altogether.

Actually, Sunsoft just re-released the FFL games, they didn't make them.
If you still can't figure out FF1-6, this chart should help you out (or not):

I'm not sure if it's called that, but from the main menu of the PS2 you have the option (if a CD is not loaded) to go into the system and change two options -- fast loading and improved graphics. Both were desgined to make some PS1 games play better on the PS2. Often they cause the game to lock and/or don't do anything to help, but with some games -- like FFA and FFC -- they DO help with the loading. Although I don't think it's that bad, myself. ;)

The Final Fantasy Legend games were originaly SaGa games in Japan that were changed a little and renamed when released by Square for the GB in the States. Final Fantasy Adventure was originaly a Mana game in Japan also. Sunsoft just re-released the four games several years after the original releases.

I believe it's that setting on ps2's that makes games load faster? maybe?

OK.. I finally got it figured out. Thanks to all for your time & attention.

So at this point.. what I need are Final Fantasy Origins and Final Fantasy Anthology; both for the PSX. I'd still like a copy of FF I for the NES.. but if I get Origins it really wouldn't be necessary (although I'd still like the cart vers). As for FF III.. then I may never see it. I'm not buying a DS (not into handhelds.. except for my Lynx);and I just now got around to buying a GCN (but w/a Gameboy Player).. so if it comes out on the GBA.. I could get it.

DDCecil.. I'm intrigued by that picture of your FF III repro cart. Is that by any chance a translated (to English) ROM version loaded onto an eprom chip or merely a straight copy of the Japanese version?

Last I checked, FFIII was scheduled to be released for the DS, not the GBA.

And I'd say that if you have the choice between FF Origins on the ps1 and FF I+II: Dawn of Souls on the gba, go for Dawn of souls. Not only is it visually equivalent to Origins, but it also includes an extra dungeon and extra bosses. On top of it, you can play it on the go, you don't need a memory card and there are absoutely no loading since it's on a cart, not a disc. And the bestiary is included in the GBA version....

I'd suggest going with Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls for the GBA instead of Final Fantasy Orgins at this point. It's a little better and has some extra content in it.

Sorry to hear you won't get a DS -- you realize there are OTHER very GOOD games coming out for the system, right? ;)

But if you want to play FF 3 now, do what I did several years ago -- grab a NES emulator and the ROM, download the patch, apply it, and play the fan translated version. :)

Oops, I see Lady made some of the points....oh well. :)

Oh, both Anthology and Collection were re-released as part of the Greatest Hits line, so you can find them cheap.
