Welcome to the first MAME Club post of 2005!

Welcome to this week's Monday Morning MAME Club Posting. Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

The ROM of the week is: 19xx: The War Against Destiny (available HERE (http://www.robohara.com/mameclub)!)
KLOV Link for the game: HERE (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=6772)

HEya Guys. Yeah. This is my pick.... just so happens to be the first of 2005! I feel so special. ;P.

ANYWAYS....

This is by far my favorite scrolling Shooter! and my most favorite of the 1941 series.

Graphics: 9

This game is eye candy. The graphics are vibrant and VERY well done. Everythings very well detailed...and sometimes has a "Puesdo-3D" feel to it, liked the 2D Graphics are digitized 3D models at point. This was a good part in the game! The Only complaint I have is that the animations for some of the world can be choppy at times.

Music and Sound: 10

Music. and Sound. Rock. It's mostly some kind of Rock for the music track... but it sometimes takes a different pace here and there.. I find myself starting MAME and going into test mode just to listen to the soundtrack to this game.

Story: 7

it's a scrolling shooter. but has something resembling a story at least.....including a reaccuring Enemy who'll appear.... attack then run away when he's damaged (Who'll you eventually fight as a tricked out boss). The setting also isn't World War II anymore... it's a Techno-War theme at least, which is a nice change. Theres also a choice of three planes...the orignal Lighting (the Average Stated Plane) The Mosquito (The Power Player... but low speed) and the Sindew (FAST, but lacking power)

Controls: 6

Same as any 194x series games. The Powerups are mostly the same from most of the games... a Wider shot cannon... 3 way Rockets.. and a Pwer Shell that can go through multiple enemies. HOWEVER... you can CHARGE your shoot in any mode by holdoing down the fire button..then releasing. Then procedd to press fire again and again when your shot has locked onto a big enemy...you will then proceed to pummel your enemy with Homing rockets!

Overall: 9

This is a seriously awesome game. It may be big, but it's worth the download time. HIGHLY Recommended.

Mmmm...Shmup...

I loved the 194X series, and this is one of the better games in that series. The graphics are really great, and there are tons of powerups. While it's not really bullet-heavy like Cave's games, it still offers quite a challenge. I don't really know what else I could say, except that if you like shmups, you really need to check out this game! :)

This is a great game. Of course, I'm partial to schmups in general and to the 194x series, but this one stands out by its better graphics, its manic action at times (although that was since upstaged by games like Ikaruga).

Lots of powerups, great fun... one of the great vertical shooters out there.

Im trying to keep in mind that it was released in '96 so thats going to bump my scores a bit.

Graphics: ...7
Challenge: 8
Sound: 6
Replay: $2 or 30 minutes
Would I make room for the cab in my garage? No.

For '96 the graphics are good. Id expect more out of an 8 year old franchise though. The same goes for the sound. Decent for '96 but it sounds like the music came right of Street Fighter 2. Keep in mind that 1996 is the same year Quake (with full Trent Reznor soundtrack) and Tomb Raider were released. The most challenging part of the game for me was trying to see the enemy fire. That doesnt make for a fun game in my opinion. I am, however, playing on a smaller display than what youd find in the arcade though. The replay value is about $2. I wouldnt make room for it in my garage. Im really sorry but it just didnt do it for me. :(

Not only has my favorite shmup in this series been chosen, but an extremely awesome shmup overall has been chosen as well! Words fail me when it comes to manic greatness such as this. All I can say is that if you like explosions, you won't hate this. :D

Very good game here, I think there's some tricks you can do at the title screen with the music. I played a little bit of it recently; not much to say except that it looks great and plays very well.

This game is very solid no doubt about it, but for some reason it just didn't have that feel the other 1940 something games gave me (say that fast three times!). I don't know, I am freaking picky sometimes.

Here is my breakdown:

graphics:8 (can't beat the tanks parachuting down while shooting at you)
music:7 (most I heard was explosions)
gameplay:8 (not too hard, not easy)
controls: 9 ( I found them quite responsive)
replay value: 2 (this is my harsh opinion, shooters for me just aren't worth really playing again once beaten)

OVERALL: 7 Good game, give it a try, you won't regret it.

This entire series is great. Not a bad game in it. This is one of those that has my favorite part in the genre: Pikcing apart giant bosses piece by piece. There's nothing like seeing a giant boss falling apart in front of you. Seeing them blink like is so many other games just doesn't have the impact.
