I got the Japan version of Nightmare Before XMAS for the PS2.
When I first popped this game in, a screen with some japanese writing came on. then a few seconds later, another screen with some japanese writing came on.
But I could never get passed the second screen.
I'm wondering what the hell I need to do to get to the actual game. I don't read japanese. Damn!
Anyways, I tried hitting all the different buttons, but for some reason, it would just stay stuck on that screen.

If nobody gives you any help, post a screenshot so we can tell you what it says.

This is just a guess, but my suspicion is that the game is checking your memory card, and that there are not enough free blocks. You may want to pick up another PS2 memory card, though, as the effects of having both US and JP PS2 saves on one card can end fatally.

The memory card that I have in there is a 32mb one. So it definitely has enough space, but I was thinking the same thing. So I tried turning it on with no memory card in there.
But then I got the same result.
I would think if there was no memory card in there, then I would get a screen saying that no memory card is in the slot, and that I can't save the game and do you want to continue without saving.
Of course, all of that would be in japanese, but I'm guessing that pressing X would cause the game to start up.
But I get the same thing whether the memory card is in there or not.

Maybe it's saying that you're trying to play a Japanese game on a US system.

That's what I'm thinking, have you actually imported a game before?
Also, yeah, post a screenshot.

If it's a modded US PS2 there's also a good chance that it has mod chip detection. There were a number of Jap PS1 games that would detect mod chips and freeze on a screen with all Japanese text telling you that it wound't work with a mod chip. I haven't heard of it on the PS2 yet, but I wouldn't be suprised.

It's a modded US PS2. I assumed that modded US PS2's could play games from Japan.
Is this not the case?
By the way, the screen that it gets stuck at is a screen where it mentions 64KB in some of the text. So I'm thinking it relates to the memory card in some way.
I only have one PS2 memory card, and it's a 32MB one from a 3rd party. I haven't had any problems with it, but maybe this game needs a regular 8mb Sony branded memory card to work.
Hmmm.

Does it work like a Gamecube, fellas? Does he need a Japanese-formatted memcard?

99%+ of the time they'll work without a problem. If they have started using a mod check protection it will most likely just be games from select publishers, as was the case with the PS1.

If that's the case, then it's not a mod issue. You're best bet might be to use a different memory card. I've never had a problem mixing US & Jap saves on my cards, but all of mine are Sony brand.
