Gran Turismo 4 has a freaking 1080i HDTV mode!

Wowsers.

According to a IGN article, Gran Turismo 4 not only supports 480p for PS2, but it also supports 1080i !

Apparently, the 1080i of GT4 doesn't look as good as some of the 720p games on XBOX, but still, it's supposed to be damn good.

Wow, I didn't know that the PS2 could even display a 1080i signal.

In fact, I'm kinda skeptical about this. It isn't the first time that I've read in some article that such in such game is going to have a HDTV mode, and then it never shows up.


Are there any other PS2 games that go beyond 480p?

in case you haven't followed AVS forum thread here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=485800) it looks like the consensus over there is with GT4 PS2 is doing a fake 1080i. You can read through the rather long thread but it basically comes down to the fact PS2 lacks the practical capability to implement true 1080i in real playable form.

still good publicity stunt by SONY to pull over M$ after seeing Xbox was promoted as HD console with just two 1080i - one being fake 1080i - and handful of 720p titles. :p

How do you fake 1080i?

Are all games that run in "interlaced mode" 1080i? (=Yes>) Rogue Squadron 3 interlaced mode faking 1080i?

there's very long and detailed post by someone explaining why it is not true 1080i. Besides there were post that at 480p and 1080i the visuals aren't much different - still beautiful mind you...

in any case those post will explain way better than I could attempt... :D
