on cart systems, did you always erase the save with the least time on it, out of courtesy to the people with more time invested? Or did you not even think about it?

I just saved over the first file, whatever that was. This is what other people seemed to be doing, and files 2 and 3 (or however many save slots there were) were always empty. If I wanted to see the game again when I rented it later, I'd save in another slot.

Sometimes I'd rent a game (this happened with Evander Holyfield's Boxing on the Genesis) and somebody had loaded the thing up with obscenities and racial slurs as the names of their characters.

Are you talking about renting games from a store or from friends? I've only rented games from friends and so of course I didn't delete their files without asking which one they no longer needed. Not only for RPGs but in general. Also games like DCK used save files.

I always deleted the saves with the most time logged...cause I'm evil :)

Well lowest level.

I used to rent RPGs I already owned just to see how far other people were. :P

I hardly ever rented games, and never rented anything with a save, such as an RPG. I have a friend who used to rent RPGs, and if he liked the game, he would keep renting it until he had finished beating it. This way he did not have to worry about people messing with his save state.

I've never rented a game ever, but whenever I buy a used game that has someone's old saves on it I leave them there if I can. If I have to write over one, I write over the one with the least time. My thought is that I might get stuck in the game and looking at someone else's save might help me figure it out.

Did they charge late fees?

Usually I would see where in the game the other saves were and if all the slots were filled, use Save 1 or whatever was closest to the beginning.

Talking of game saves, I always used to rent cart games, and things like Micro Machines always used to have rude ames in place of the characters! Lol!

As for RPG's, I always kept the ones with the most time just in case I got stuck and wanted to see what I was missing.

Also, my Blockbuster only ever gave out the first disc for any Final Fantasy game simply because they don't expect you to get through it in three days... If you wanted the second disc, you had to be specific!

The earliest one would go. Sometimes it was fun to check out the files towards the end of the game, and just do some random battles.

Of course, we all get evil sometimes and i'd erase everything

There were only three RPGs I ever really rented back in the day.

Dragon Warrior (before the free with NP offer)
Final Fantasy
Shadowrun

As I recall, I always deleted the game with the least time invested, unless I noticed that the biggest one wasn't changing over the weeks. I'd rent it one weekend, let it go the next, then rent it again later. IF the big save was still there and hadn't moved I'd kill it.
