View Full Version : Classy Gaming Rooms

I was looking at all the gaming rooms and I am extremely impressed by the size of a lot of the collections, but I am wondering if anyone has a setup that is more of a modern design.
What I mean is, it seemed that just about all the setups were shelves for systems and then shelves and shelves of games. And with no disrespect at all intended, but they often seemed cluttered and a bit messy.
Since I am moving into a condo soon I will not have the luxury of having a whole room dedicated to this (and my collection is very small) so I am looking for a presentable setup that will be in the family room. I only have about 4 consoles right now, but will eventually be expanding to about 10. I am thinking I will keep all the games in a bookcase type of arrangement in the closet and will try to do wireless controllers where I can. I am also going to ask a friend of mine whose an interior designest for ideas about this, but I thought I would check with the experts on here first.
You guys have to have some systems upstairs in the family rooms and I'm sure the wives don't tolerate a cluttered mess, so what does it look like?
Links to any pictures or websites of either your own setup or others would be great.

It depends on how big your collection is. I have a middle sized collection and it's hard to keep under control at time, a big one is very tough. Draws and shelves are the easy way to store the hundreds or thousands of games. Any other way it impracticle when you get a decent size collection going.
The second bedroom of my three bedroom home is my game room. Everything is nice and neat and my wife even sweeps and mops it for me!
I plan on constructing a 13' x13' room behind the garage, which will be my permanent game room. Wall-to-wall carpeting and air conditioning= no social life. :)

Hmm, my collection sure wouldn't fit in this thread! Shoeboxes full of Genesis and SNES games...in fact, I've done much the same for most of my import collection (bought some cheap stackable plastic file cabinets for x68K games, and these are full) as my one shelf is already full. Well, anything beats stuff getting faded by sunlight.

If I just had four consoles, I'd stick them all under my entertainment center (possibly even hiding them behind a door or something). Most entertainment centers have shelves available directly under the television for the surround sound speaker. If I had just a few systems, I'd stick them there.
Nate, you pose a great question, but unfortunately I think you might be comparing apples and oranges. I'm sure a lot of us would do things differently if we only had 4 consoles hooked up instead of 40. I think many of the designs you see in the Rooms of Doom are a case of function over form. Another apple/orange comparison is the desire to hide your systems -- most of the Rooms of Doom are designed to do just the opposite -- to show off large collections! I think that's the reason for shelves versus tubs and covered cabinets.
If you come up with a way to store 20 full-size arcade videogames that will make my wife happy, do tell. I hear about it on at least a weekly basis. :)

I can't help you out too much, problem is, is that you get yourself situated and it's all set up nice and you outgrow it and need to rearrange it and it only gets worse. I have almost 50 game consoles and around 1800 games and I am running out of room in my bedroom.

Flip away, James Bond style. When you enter the room you see a couch, table, etc. Then you flip a switch, everything flips up, into the wall, and the cabs come up from the floor. Everyone's happy.
I plan on hiding a lot of my collection. I have designed a drawer unit along minimalist lines. It'll cost a bit to build, but once it's done it will hold a ton of games. And it wil look cool to boot.

I'm actually "remodeling" my game room if you will. New furniture, new paint job, new decor, etc.
I'm aiming for functionality and a modern design more so than anything. I can't afford to collect anymore like most of the rest of the DP members can, so I've decided I need to switch my focus from 90% collecting / 10% playing to more of the opposite - 90% playing / 10% collecting - thus the need for a functional, yet stylish and relaxing game room.
I'll most definitely post photos when I'm done, but it's been an ongoing process - I'd probably have to take some time off work and dedicate several days to finally complete it. But I'm going to be thrilled when it's done - I'll be so happy to have a room to watch movies, play games, and relax in instead of a room to hop over the piles and piles of games to squeeze into the computer desk.

Yeah if ai had a good way to attach all the systems to the tv and store them at the same time I would have a clean gallery. But like flack said, I have 20 some systems hooked up at the same time, not 4. If I had none it would be easy to be clean. :D

I think downfall's got another good point -- I know my RoD is constantly being "remodeled". The pictures of my gameroom show the last generation of shelves I owned which were replaced by the ones I have now which are about to be replaced. It seems like I'm always upgrading, redoing, or messing with stuff. And just when you get everything perfectly situated, you end up buying something that won't fit. :)

I don't think there is a way to display any type of large collection. Forgive me, but every single "collection pic" that I've ever seen looks like crap. "Cluttered and a bit messy" is an understatement. The weird thing is that it could be the most tidy setup ever, and it still looks like a confetti bag exploded.
After pondering this question for about 10 years, I finally decided to pack all that video game and Star Wars stuff away and just display a couple of really cool pieces in a classy way.
For example, I've got a piece of the actual model used to make the Death Star in A New Hope. I now have it in an acrylic case with a little metal badge that says "Death Star - Episode IV". It looks really cool and sits on our bookcase.
Video game-wise, I just took a couple of my favorites (Panzer Dragoon Saga and Phantasy Star) and had them framed. They hang on the wall in my office next to a framed copy of Issue 1 of Manci Games (wink, wink) and look really nice.
In short, I think the only reasonable way to display a video game collection in a "classy way" is on a very small scale. Once you start lining shelves with 'em, they start to look like a landfill. So, put a couple out and put the rest in crates, or relegate them to some obscure corner of your house that not many people see. Just make sure that you still have easy access to that corner so you can still wow your semi-interested friends with when they come over.

Thanks for the pictures and links (I want that mame cabinet!) and I guess you're right, most people are trying to show them off and not hide them. I know that the minimialist approach is best and that is the style of the condo so I will be keeping just about all the games in cases and shelves in a closet. I'm envisioning pull-down type drawers (think mailbox door) rather that ones that open up, and once you pull it down wa-la a console is there. Having the option of course to close (push up) all the pull downs so that no system is shown.
"every single "collection pic" that I've ever seen looks like crap," well yeah I could agree with that, but I'm new to this board and not trying to cause any conflict. I guess what I'm looking for is how a female would set this up in her family room.
I still have hope though. In my little 2-door g35 I have seen people squeeze a multiple systems (xbox and ps2) all in the car and include 4 tvs and an awesome sound system, while still maintaining a very classy and presentable setup. Video game systems and their wires are just ugly, the ability to hide them is crucial. The guy who has the shelves lined out with each system on paper is a neat idea, I think that type of thing (on a much smaller basis) with doors that close is what I'm going for. Please keep the pics and links coming, thanks!
For those interested these condo links are below are type of feel that I'm interested in. BTW, I'm a young bachelor, so showing off an elaborate video game collection is not exactly what I'm aiming for.

No I cannot afford the 2nd condo, especially with a $30,000 parking spot... I was just trying to illustrate the style and those seemed to have a few pictures... Style being wood floors, simple, somewhat bleek. I am mostly focusing on the west side and even maybe in the suburbs a bit (Oak Park). I would prefer to live in little italy, but the only nice places sell far out of my range.
As for Chicago being insane on real estate, I am going to have to disagree - especially when compared to other large cities.
Here's the governments website for home price appreciation comparisons - select metropolitian areas.

You'll see chicago is almost always single digits, only last year (lowest rates in decades) was it low double digits... Now compare it to where I really want to live, which is San Diego - a 30% increase last year alone and over the last 5years, 120%! Chicago does not even make it in the top 20.

I'm not looking forward to moving in a few months (from Madison, WI to Savannah, GA). Means that pretty much everything stays in boxes in whatever apartment we find until we can find a house. I'm just worried about space. I've got these really great video store shelves and towers for all my movies (everything faced) that take up A LOT of room. I just hope I don't have to store them or sell them.

My friend goes to SCAB, she loves the town, but on her 4th year of college is now sick of the townspeople. Great weather though.
You might look into a storage unit that only charge you a dollar for the first month. They don't have a minimum to stay (at least not the ones here), my friend stored some stuff in one for about 3 weeks and when he pulled it out he owed a whole dollar. Talk about a deal.

Heh.. I'm not much of an interior designer or anything - but I know what I like, and to me, that's what a room of doom should be - a room that I like, that I enjoy and is a place where I can get away from the daily stress of life. It's awesome to have 500+ games, but it's not awesome to have them all packed in tubs and bookshelves in the closet either. It's also not awesome to have to hunt through 500 games to find the ones I want to play. Out of all the games in my collection, probably 20% are games that I really enjoy playing - the rest are just filler - I'm never going to drop enough money to complete any collection. I'd rather just keep what I know I want to play and have a room where everything is easily accessable to play.
Either way, I'm hoping to have everything finished within a few months. Let me know if you do end up back here!
If I have time today, I'll throw together a little mock-up blueprint of what I'm aiming for.

If the second condo was in DC it would be A STEAL!
A lot of the furniture in the second condo is designed by Alvar Aalto for Herman Miller

Yeah, It is pretty expensive, but it will last a lifetime and won't go out of style. Also, you can get classic furniture at a fraction of the cost on eBay.
For everything elese, I'd go with Ikea--especially for shelving.

I like to keep mine functional but still have it look nice. I like little figurines and doo-dads all over the shelves in front of the games to keep it from looking plain.
Yeah, they're shelves, but they look nice as well. I bought a bunch of the modular shelving adjustable screw to the wall kinds from Lowes. Black supports with white shelves. Too bad each time I went, they had different colored brackets. So I have three sets of black, one white and one silver. I'd paint the silver one black if I get the chance. Same with the white one. Of course, the white one would probably stay as it signifies that the white one is miscellaneous, black is games and silver is the consoles and boxes. Still, I'll prefer them to be uniform. (Same thing happened when I was getting shelves. Some times they were out of the size I wanted. So I have a few widths and thicknesses. Not as noticable though.)
Sadly, I have too much stuff in this one small room, so when I'm not taking photos, the floor is nowhere to be seen. That is, it's covered by stuff with no home.

While I am deeply honored someone mentioned my collection in this thread, the last thing I would consider it is 'classy' It is not even good for displaying the games I have since 250+ N64 boxes and all the NES boxes are packed away since I am out of room. I consider it 50lbs of shit in a 5lb sack. It is functional but not much else.
If I had the opportunity and unlimited cash I would have a 50x100 room that would be just for my collection/gameroom in order to adequately display everything and also have it functional. There is no chance of a pretty collection when it is stacked like cordwood. Custom shelves to hold all the games, a tasteful and limited selection of memorabilia, a well-designed and well-organized system and gameplay area are the qualifications I would have for a nice gameroom.

I've got my games split into two rooms really: the 4 'current' consoles connected to my TV in my family room, and my other 20ish consoles connected in what I call my games room.
The key to keeping my games room tidyish was to use the closet. If I didn't use the closet space to extend the room everything just gets *so* cramped. As it is I have my old entertainment centre in there (the one I used before I purchased a 36" TV) and I think it works *beautifully*.
I agree with what people are saying though - once your collection gets to a certain size it'll *always* look cluttered somewhat. Doesn't matter if it's games or vinyl or books or whatever - too much of the same thing, no matter how organized, is gonna look *crazy*. So if you want to keep things looking tidyish keep your collection smaller rather than massive.

Yeah I guess gaming room shouldn't be in the title of this post. It should be like mini-gaming room or basically what your family room looks like (presuming you have some systems in there as well). I just didn't realize everyone had such a huge collection, I didn't even know 27 consoles existed.
I'll have to check out Lowe's for ideas, I didn't even think of that. I'm not a huge fan of IKEA (I have not had good luck with their product durability), but there's one fairly close to me so it would be dumb to not at least check it out.
I often find myself using items for other uses and they seem to work better and I guess that's also what I was looking for when it comes to video game and console storage and presentation =) For instance, at work I keep all the chocolate on my desk in a cotton ball container (rather than a candy dish) and rather than a plastic bottle of lotion I put it all in a chrome soap dispenser (both products courtsey of Target).
The only original idea I've had so far for video game storage is to use a stakable shoe organizer (with closing doors) and keep any additionall accessories in there (guns, controllers, keyboards, etc.). I think this will look much better than having wires and misc. items sitting all over the closet shelf.
As for the condo, yes just about everything Herman Miller is the style I'm going for. However, I didn't think mentioning that brand would give people a better idea of what I was going for - guess you proved me wrong on that one.
This is actually my dream place (not the 300k+ one - although that would be an amazing location),
http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1037525807
It's too far south for me though, but I may have to make the trip down there to see how it is. Anyone ever lived in Hyde Park? I can handle a little ghetto, but I don't want my roommate (whose female) to feel unsafe when she's coming home.
Keep the ideas coming and pictures help out so much. Even if you think it's not what I'm looking for I will probably at least get an idea from something your collection has (as I've gotton from the gaming room pics). Thanks for all the replies so far!

just a thought on custom shelving...
if you know how many games there are for any given console (nes, 2600, genesis) then why not take the dimensions of the complete boxes/just carts/whatever and multply that by the number of games to get your "storage area" and dimensions for shelving for that console?
example - nes has 792? games and say the boxes are 6" x 8" x 1" (w x h x d)
your shelves should be about 8" deep x 8' h (shelves - 12" high (1" for shelf)) and 100" long (or 2 - 50", you get my point).
that way THIS SHELF IS RESERVED FOR XXXXX
this would be very modern and very sleek in my opinion. your thoughts?

(presuming you have some systems in there as well).
But of course! I keep my four most recent machine connected in my family room! (That way I get the best picture and the best sound possible).
My current entertainment system has a main piece and two side pieces. Each piece has a door at the bottom of it with a couple of shelves. The outside pieces are where I keep my games, the pieces directly under the TV are where the consoles go. Wifely loves it, I love it.
When I didn't have the outside pieces I'd cram games in with the machines (there's lots of room). And if I ran out of space I'd just make sure that the games I was currently playing were there and I'd store the others somewhere else (I didn't run out of space previously, mind you I didn't have 70ish PS2 games previously either ;) ).

The arcade kicks ass. Now *that's* classy.
The actual collection picks still look like a flea market, but there's nothing you can do about that Flack. Just the nature of collecting.
I always thought a cool setup would be something like "Mr. Glass" had with his comic book store in Unbreakable. Just with games instead of comics, of course.

I live in DC, and I'll be condo shopping in like 6 months. There's no way I'll find ANYTHING for under $300,000, it's just inconceivable. I WILL have a $2k/month mortgage on a condo, and there's nothing I can do about it.
Right now I'm paying $1850/month in *rent* on a 840 sqft apartment in Arlington, VA. I'm 24 years old and I live with my fiance.
And I can't move to the midwest, there isn't exactly a glut of investment banking/private equity jobs to be had out there.

There's some billion dollar hedge fund firm in Chicago (I remember because I was looking at a position at their firm, but everyone worked 12 hours a day and was salaried, ack), along with some other firms (e.g. calamos investments). Probably more in D.C. though... hot as hell in Chicago today though (93).
Not to stray off topic though...
Anyone have more pictures of their gaming rooms that are designed with some taste in mind? I guess I was never really looking for a gaming room picture though. I was just wondering if anyone had a "classy" setup in their family room (I don't have nor never really want a whole room dedicated to video games) and could provide pictures that would spark ideas for me...

In our living room, we have an X360, XBox, PS2, GameCube, N64, Dreamcast, and Saturn hooked up to the TV and, if you were just watching TV there, you'd only see the 360. Everything else is tucked away underneath the TV in two small cabinets. If we want to use a classic system (which is irregular), then I'll pull it out of the closet and hook it up. We don't use the classic consoles regularly enough to need them instantly available. When in our home, it's tough to tell that video games really even exist... just don't go down to the basement...

I setup a spare Dreamcast in the living room and use that to emulate games. Anything else draws me in for a longer period of time than I'd like to spend outside of my La-Z-Boy.
check out ntsc-uk.com's gaming setup thread if you want to see examples of neat classy setups.

I stumbled across his guy's room by accident over the weekend. And I was just stunned by how clean, modern-looking and simple it is!

I Thought this was a videogame forum. This guy needs to go to Martha Stewart.com. I think everbobies shelves are beautiful. If it is not cluttered you dont have a great collection. Hey I got an idea maybe this guy should open a museum with a ton of buttlers. Classy + Neat = No Problem

of really pretty game setup
Thats 100% from an Ikea catalog. We've got those same narrow tall shelves that are to the right and left of that guys TV. Now if we can just fit more into our too small area the Wall O' Games will look nice once again.

Nate
I don't think there is a way to display any type of large collection. Forgive me, but every single "collection pic" that I've ever seen looks like crap. "Cluttered and a bit messy" is an understatement. The weird thing is that it could be the most tidy setup ever, and it still looks like a confetti bag exploded.
After pondering this question for about 10 years, I finally decided to pack all that video game and Star Wars stuff away and just display a couple of really cool pieces in a classy way.
.
ManciGames has the right idea. If the Smithsonian Museum put all of the stuff they have on display they would need to take over every building in Washington DC.
Do what the professionals do. Store most of you stuff in plastic boxes in a climate controlled store room and have a small display where you rotate in different systems from time to time.
I have the storeroom part down but have not had time for much rotating of late. :embarrassed:

Some of those rooms makes me cry, esp. Flack's arcade. I wish I could buy my own place so I could create my own "house of doom." Unfortunately I live 2 seconds away from NYC so prices for even the crappiest places cost a fortune.

Not to toot my own horn but I like my setup. I have a older office desk and a couple of pieces from IKEA (game rack and TV stand). I’ve also tried hard to display my stuff in a nice fashion including my rack with boxed SNES and NES titles, all alphabetically aligned and labeled.

I think that the key point with this is, is how much the appearance of clutter matters to you, and in what way? It's going to be difficult to display more than one console worth of collection without it looking that way, if anything due to the disparity in appearance between the two. Not that this is as bad with modern consoles, where everything comes in DVD cases.
Probably the best thing to do is stack your games and controllers up, and figure out from there how you want to display it. If you want the collection to be accessible, yet hidden, invest in cabinets with doors. If you haunt the clearance sales, you might even find one of those units for holding old VHS tapes, where you swing the doors out, and the insides of the doors are lined with VHS shelves, as well as the back of the cabinet.
Another important factor is to ask yourself if you're willing to hook and unhook consoles as you play with them, or if you need them all hooked up and ready at practically a moment's notice. It'll be easier to make it look 'neat' if you pack the consoles away when you're finished, but it can be a pain to dig the NES out when it filtered to the back just to play a round of Super Mario Brothers.
I'm not planning on impressing anyone with my game room, but it's in the back, away from the living room, and can be easily closed off when I need to.

I have all of my loose stuff in storage bins in another room. I also keep most of my gaming books/guides/magazines there as well. As for my gaming TV I have a simple A/V selector (RCA audio/S-Vid/composite vid) and RF cord in one of the sliding doors on my TV stand. I simply pull it out and hook into the one I need and game-on. That makes it so I don’t have to get to the rear of my TV to constantly plug and unplug things.

First thing I want to say is Flack, your arcade rocks man. :)
XYXZYZ, I love your game room set up. Doesn't look bad at all.
smokehouse, I really dig the angled game shelf, and the consoles are set up very neat. The Decepticon desktop
wallpaper rules BTW. 8-)

Yeah I also like what smokehouse has done with his room. I keep most of my stuff put away or in a bin somewhere in a closet. I was just (and am still always) looking for more presentable setups since I don't have a whole room dedicated to this stuff (nor do I think I ever want that)... Or even if I did have a room, I wouldn't want it look like my kid brothers.
It seems that concealing most of them (yet having them easily accessible) is the way to go for me -=)

Okay, sorry to bump this ancient thread, but I was looking for somewhere to share my gameroom and this "Classy Gaming Rooms" one sounded like a good place.
Basically, I took 44 game systems and hooked them all up in the neatest way possible. I can walk into the room and play any of them.

Well I'd like to think mine is classy, or at least tidy. It's in a basement, so it's dark, but I'd honestly prefer it that way when playing games or watching movies.

wow, some really classy setups on this page! not too cluttered, not sterile like an apple commercial either. i really dig the basement setup (we don't have those out here...) and the 44 console one, holy crap i'm struggling to make like 10 systems work right now, props on that.
i'm in the process of adding another bookcase soon for magazines, artbooks & such but ill post mine soon, it really doesn't compare to some of these though!
