Has anyone noticed that, if you play a GBA game on the DS with the volume not very loud, that, occasionally, the speakers with "cap". I know that there's some technical term for this, but I don't remember it right now--it's the sort of scratchy noise that a speaker makes if it is pushed to produce too much sound.

Anyways, I really enjoy the sharpness of the DS screens for GBA games, but I can't stand the sound problems! Anyone else have this?

The word you're looking for might be clipping? That's the term for what happens when a waveform is made too loud for the space provided to it, causing the tops of the audio samples to be cut, or clipped off, which creates a really nasty sound.

I have not had any sound problems with mine, though I haven't played too many GBA games on my DS either. Does this happen for you on all games?

"Clipping", yeah, I think that's it. The only GBA games that I've used on it are Kingdom Hearts: COM, Final Fantasy 1+2, and Donkey Kong Country 2, and all 3 of those had this problem occasionally.

I noticed this today playing Mario 64 DS. Turned the volume up a bit and it was fine.

Well it's not clipping.

Clipping only occurs when the amplifier circuit is overloaded.
And having the sound low wouln't cause the amplifier circuit to overload.

It must be a bug , like the GP32 sound bug. Sometimes this type of thing happens when certain things are emulated. maybe the DS has some GBA sound emulation happening ?

I've noticed it gets real bad with games that use Musy X sound. Iridion immediately comes to mind as do some of the Jurassic Park games. It's almost inaudible.
