I recently bought a copy of Entombed for the Atari 2600. Is it just me or does this seem like Mr. Drillers Great Grandfather?

Spot on.

I never really thought about it that way before but that's quite an excellent comparison. There are a few subtle differences, in Entombed you *can* move upwards, however (though at any but the earliest levels you really can't afford to). You also don't have that annoying ankh monster or whatever it was called patroling your path. On the plus side, Entombed is a great two-player game, a feature that which would have been nice in Mr. Driller.

Grandfather... most certainly!

I wonder if the Mr. Driller designers had ever played Entombed in the past?

just as a random thought to throw in as well,
the Character from Dig Dug is Mr.Driller's Dad.
Seriously.

First let me say thank you. Random observations like this are what I enjoy most about forums like this :)

I just played Entombed for the first time, just now, and I have to agree with your observation. I wouldn't be surprised if the designers hadn't ever heard of it (it is an American game on an American console after all), but I also wouldn't be shocked to hear them say they were inspired by it.

Best of all, I have a new game to throw into my VCS rotation :)

It's funny, I ordered a bunch of early 80's video games for myself as a Christmas present this year and the first 2600 game I tried was Yar's Revenge. I've read some posts about it and most said it was a Star Castle clone. Well, I was a big Star Castle fan in high school so I gave it a shot. After 20 minutes of not understanding what the hell was going on I went to the AtariAge site to read the online manual (all my games came without instructions). After I figured out what I was supposed to do I can see the simularitities to Star Castle, but it certainly isn't what I'd consider a clone (by the way it's an excellent game). Next I tried Entombed which I also read here was good. But having no instructions and no idea what the heck I was supposed to do I immediately thought, "Hey, this is the same as my Dreamcast's Mr. Driller". Strange how I saw little if any simularities between Yar's Revenge and Star Castle but I immediately saw the simularity between Entombed and Mr. Driller...

I guess my brain just works differently.

Well, I've gotten tons of great information about classic games from this site so it's nice to hear that I was able to add something to the great info available here.

Thanks.

It was originally just gonna be Dig Dug. And the game was gonna be called Dig Dug 3.

Funny story: I was talking to a co-worker about getting Mr Driller for DS for Xmas (no, I don't have a DS yet :) ) and he'd never heard of Mr Driller! (It shocked me quite a bit because he's a pretty big gamer).

Well I happen to have a PlayStation in my office and Mr Driller sitting in it, so I fire it up just so he can see it in action. One of the first things he said was "hey, that looks like Dig Dug" - and this was before the original post outlining Mr Driller's paternity. I told him it wasn't Dig Dug, it was Mr. Driller and left it at that until I read the post above.

I can't believe I never made the connection on my own :embarrassed:
