is there a reason for this???
Are there people with more $$$ than they know what to do with it in the NES scene?

Yea. I don't understand this one either. This game is awsome, but not even a really in demand game, like Zelda. The game isn't rare. I see them all the times. This is strange...

It honestly makes me sick. :/

Like 8bitnes said, it's rare in this condition. This is only the 4th copy that I've ever heard of - try finding one.
But I think there's some punishment bidding going on here... killerdoll wouldn't actually pay 600 for it, he just sold most of his black boxes at half that price. He's just forcing other interested parties to pay more, IMO.

Second that. The only other normal black boxes more desired would be DK Jr. Math and maybe Clu Clu Land (Not counting Stack Up). I wouldn't pay more than $300 though, but that's just my own spending opinion. In sealed collector circles, $300 would probably be a steal....

Well... I agree about dk math and clu clu being the best ones to have, but stack up isn't anywhere in the same league... it's actually not that hard to find sealed. And there are others that would be more desirable than wrecking crew also, IMO, but whatever... point is it's a tough one to nab.

Good point. Stackup is more common sealed compared to those three... why? Who knows.
And that avatar is a handdrawn picture of the Pope of Gingerbread peoples, knife fights, and bear wrestling, the one, the only, the Smackity A of the world famous Smackity A and her Stable of Man-hoes.

That's the thing about sealed collecting, some of the most common games can fetch HIGH dollars cause they aren't seen sealed too often.
Cheetahman 2 is pretty rare, finding it sealed is easy enough though, but you get a sealed Clu Clu Land or another rare Black Box title and you're gonna many times more than the Cheetahman 2.

dude, seriously? even kidding, that is a sad statement to make.
well, i could honestly say that if i had the money i would be in the "circle" to buy factory sealed NES games, and i would most definately be going after this one. If I recall, wrecking crew was released only twice; the 5 screw version with the hangtab on the box and a 3 screw version (gold nintendo seal, with no security screws and no hangtab box).
Also, don't forget that this game isn't easy to find complete. Loose? common. Complete? very uncommon. Factory Sealed? very rare indeed.

There's a genre of films called "Comedy." Watch a few films in this genre and you just might "chuckle."
I suppose I need to rephrase my previous post.
I collect selaed NES games and this would make a fabulous addition to my collection! I wish that I could afford this item, but, alas, I am not wealthy enough to do so. The desire to own this item is so strong, that I would do nearly anything to obtain it.
Did that help?

I don't have any actual hard evidence to suggest this, but...
In my days of collecting NES variations (yes, i'm a nut who collects the screw/seal variants as well) I have only come across two wrecking crew carts (those being the stated above).
A few that I have only seen released 5 screw in hangtab boxes are:
Clu Clu Land
Dk. Jr. Math
Stack Up
GumShoe
Soccer
and i think that's it... balloon fight might be one too. not sure.
Any who... others that i have seen only two variations of have been Wrecking Crew and Slalom (and i am not sure about slalom, although i am almost positive that no other version of wrecking crew exists, just from my experience). The Donkey Kongs might also fit under this catagory, can't quite remember.
All the other black box series games got released a number of times (i.e. Golf, Baseball, Duck hunt, Kung Fu, Ice Climber (?), Mario Bros and so on).
That's just from memory so don't quote me on anything there. Figuring out variations for black box is a real pain and a lot of time, but it most definately needs to be done.
and then there are the canadain releases if you want to get in more depth about black box variations... and the italian boxes (like that brand new clu clu land you sold, i had never seen one quite like it).
blah, i'm rambling.

4 versions? I'm intrigued.. I only know of three, but I only collect sealed so it's hard to come across all the different variations in sealed format.
So there is the
1)original hangtab box / non rev a
2) non hangtab box/ rev a
3) white seal of approval / rev a
what's the 4th? Is there a non hangtab box/ non rev a or something?
I know I have some sealed games like that, but assumed based on what I've seen so far that if it's non rev a, it didn't come out in a hangtab box version. Latest release date of a sealed hangtab box I've ever seen is January 88 (karnov).

Well there are quite possibly 6 versions (for black box, not all hangtab games), but for sure there are these 5 versions (almost for sure...)
1)original hangtab box / non rev a with famicom adapter inside cart (although i have yet to see a dk jr math with a famicom adapter)
2)original hangtab box / non rev a with no famicom adapter/ 5 screw(aka unhinged)/gold round seal (no secruity screws)
3)non hangtab box / non rev. a/ 3 screw/gold round seal (no secruity screws)
4)non hangtab box/ rev. a/ 3 screw/gold round seal (secruity screws)
5)non hangtab box/ 3 screws/white oval seal (secruity screws)
and possibly the 6th version would be: non hangtab box/ 3 screws/white oval seal (secruity screws) AND a different color shade on the art work of the cart (ha, ha, ha... are we having fun yet?).
and that times that by all the countries (canada, italy, UK and so on :) )
and then 10 yard fight is a messed up one as well. There is something strange with the country codes on that bastard... well from what i remember. So an exclusive extra variant to the black box games? maybe
the fourth version of golf has a lighter green lettering on the cart. The whole art work looks to be a shade brighter.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: Please not the above rules don't apply to all black box games... just the ones that continued being made up until the death of the NES in the early 90s.

Interesting stuff. I think the 'shade brighter' variants are already covered in your list above though. All of the hangtab box games I have look like that, the art has a slightly deeper color strike. When I get a chance to go to my storage unit I will pull some 1st vs later edition versions of some games and show you what I mean. I'll post to this thread. Unless you're thinking of something else?
Also, while a couple of games would have this many variants possibly, I think most wouldn't. Dk jr math and clu clu land for example, probably just have one version, right? And something like superman would only have two, etc.
Still... I guess no one has a 'complete' nes collection, huh? ;)

feel free to post the pics here, but the shade varaint appears on two games (of the same title) with the white oval seal of approval. Thus, Golf with a white seal of approval and three screws has two different color shades to the background.
And you are correct to say that clu clu land and dk jr math have only one version each, that is unless you can find ones with famicom adapters.

gray seal REV A, no hantag 5 screw?
all 5 screw games came in boxes with hangtabs.
sounds like you have some boxes mixed up with different games (happens a lot). Make sure the cart says Rev A or has a country code of sorts. Black box series 5 Screw games don't have any of this information on the carts nor on the box (thus how you can match up the games with the boxes).
Gray seals are only on Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Donkey Kong 3 (no other black box game), these seals are equavlant to the gold seals.
I believe you on the balloon fight since it was a more popular game, but wrecking crew? I need some proof.

I don't think this whole variants project is so insurmountable if we stick to US copies for now.. I think the release dates are the key..
for example, I would that most games released on or after March, 1989 would have only one variant (white seal). This is the majority of the releases for the system... I think before coming up with a detailed list, I think it would be useful to come up with general guidelines for what we would expect to occur.
The key question in my mind is whether or not hangtab boxes and non rev a non hangtab boxes are mutually exclusive. I.e. I have a hangtab box gradius, and a rev a non hangtab box gradius. Does a non hangtab/ non rev a gradius exist?
Or to take the same question on a slightly different tack, I have non rev a versions of kid icarus, mike tyson, ghosts n goblins, breakthru, slalom, and others. Do hangtab boxes exist for these games at all? Or was the first release for these games a non hangtab, non rev a? Entirely possible because most of the release dates on the games I just mentioned is 1987. It seems as though the hangtab boxes were being phased out during 1987, although used as late as Jan 88 or later.
Once that's figured out, we should be left with this as a summary:
LICENSED games:
1) black boxes - one to five (?) variants depending on title
2) games released between black boxes and Jan 1988(?) - depending on results of above questions, probably two to three versions each of the less popular games, i.e.:
a) hangtab box
b) non hangtab, non rev a
(are a and b mutually exclusive?)
c) non hangtab, rev a
and three to four versions of the more popular games, i.e.
a) to c) plus
d) white seal
--and possibly only one version of some games. Stadium events (sept 87)?
3) games released after Jan 1988 (?) but before March, 1989 - probably only two versions each, i.e.
-black seal/ rev a
-white seal versions
(non rev a games for these dates don't exist as far as I'm aware[?])
4) March 1989 and after - probably only white seals.
5) games published by multiple manufacturers like Impossible Mission 2 (SEI vs AVE)
6) games published with more than one variety of box art (e.g.'s untouchables, tmnt 2 [pizza offer box], etc)
UNLICENSED - probably only one version of each with some exceptions such as:
- cart color variations like action 52
- color dreams language variants
and finally, games published in both licensed and unlicensed versions (rbi baseball, pacman, gauntlet).

I have hangtag versions of Kid Icarus, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Slalom, and Breakthru. So yes, them and others like Section Z, 1942, MUSCLE, etc do have those varieties.
A&B are mutually exclusive based on my experience.

This is great :D I'm really enjoying this discussion.
a) and b) can't be mutually exclusive then, since I have a breakthru non rev a / non hangtab, and you have a hangtab.
OK, so probably all games prior to Jan 88 (?) had hangtab version (can anyone confirm zelda, tyson, etc?).
So now where the hell am I going to find factory sealed copies of all these variants? I think I'm gonna barf

I have hangtag versions of Rad Racer, Kid Icarus, and Metroid as well as 5 screws. I have a Canada release Dragon Warrior with a hangtag too but have never seen a 5 screw on it either. whoa baby!
I love NES collectors who know their shit :)
Completely forgot about mario and popeye, but those two are definately silver/gray (whatever you want to call them) seals.
Bronty,
I like your idea about breaking them up like so and i also believe release dates are key for this.
One key point we should all notice is that ALL 5 Screw games came with a box that had a hangtab (although i have never seen a hangtab zelda box, but have seen the cart). So if we can figure out the cut off date (was it karnov?) for 5 screw hangtab boxed games, we can figure that every game released prior to this date was released 5 screw/hangtab/non rev a. Does that make sense?
I think we should tackle this portion first. Also, 8bitnes, i am in no way doubting that those versions of such games exist (wrecking crew and balloon fight), i just have never seen them. When collecting NES variants anything is possible ;)
One more thing to note: I have (in the past) had two different copies of Ikari Warriors (both three screw, Rev. A, Gold Seal) however one of the copies had secruity screws while the other had regular screws. Otherwise, both carts were identical. Whats up with that?
In concern with Mike Tysons Punch Out!!; it was released right before karnov (10/87) so there is quite possibly a five screw variation of this game (although i have never seen one. Anybody remember buying this game brand new when it came out on release day?
So, if we use Karnov as the ending point to five screw variations (released Jan. 1988) we can include all these games as having five screw/hangtab/ non rev a.:

18. Donkey Kong 3 (6/86)

I wish I had tons of extra money, a complete sealed US nes collection would look so nice... if I was rich I'd buy other things, but I think a complete sealed nes collection is something I would go for, it might coast around $60,000 though... and to think, if someone would have collected the games back when they came out it would only have costed around $30,000.

It would cost a lot more than 60k to actually complete it, IMO x_x I want to yak when I think of how much I've spent (although considerably less than 60k) and I'm nowhere close to completion :sob: Not to mention the fact that you can't exactly call up a store and just order a sealed rush n attack or whatever. You have to wait and wait and wait and then pounce when the opportunity presents itself. It's not just money but also a huge amount of time. Have to watch ebay constantly or other collectors will get rare games you need ended for cheap by unwitting sellers. And I'm not even going to mention the fact that there are a few titles I've never seen sealed (and no, stadium events is not one of them). It's practically impossible. And of course you've got other collectors with varying degrees of maturity (read: none) actually trying to bid up the price on you on games they know you need so that you'll have less money for the next auction.. Mark my words this wrecking crew auction is exactly that scenario. (No, I'm not one of the people bidding)

Hey anything you can confirm would be helpful. I suggest we all post the games we can confirm as hangtab boxes to start. Then we can move on to non hangtab, non rev a, etc.

PS qixmaster, I think you're right about the release dates on at least one of the black boxes in the DP database being off, because according to DP there are 17 games released 10/85 but I was 99% sure it was 18 although I might be wrong. Not sure if dk math is 10/85 or not though.
Hmm... wait a sec... let me check the copyright date on my dk math box. I'll get back to you.

The problem with DKjr Math is that many sources list its release date correctly at 6/86. But in the Nov 95 issue of NP (volume 78) they erroneously listed it as a launch title in their NES 10 year anniversary special. Since that time, this error has snowballed as that issue was referenced when later lists were compiled. I think Nintendo's own NES release list on their website even perpetuates this error. All sources I have found dated before this volume 78 of NP list DKjr Math's release as 6/86. Unless someone can show me a pre-Nov'95 reference of this as a launch title, I'm inclined to beleive that it's not.
And if you think about it, why would they launch with DKjr Math but NOT any of their classic/well-known DK titles? It doesn't make any sense.

but you have to think that the dk jr math has a gold seal, not one of those gray/silver arcade seals (which were all indeed released 6/86; Mario Bros, popeye, donkey kong, donkey kong jr and donkey kong 3). Why would nintendo print the seal different then the others? Was it because dk jr math wasn't released in the arcade?
What we need is someone to come forward who actually bought a NES on launch day and saw or did not see this title on the shelves with all the other black box games.
But since I have yet to see a famicom adapter inside a dk jr math, i am thinking that it quite possibly could have been released june of 1986. not sure though.
Could we split this topic off into a seperate thread?
I will get my known hangtab version games all together and post what i have.

The silver seal IMO is definitely for the arcade classics series only. DK math is 'education series.' All the other 6/86 black box releases have gold seals (eg gumshoe, urban champion).

I don't think that Startropics is that old. I am pretty sure it was released in 1990, as it was all over Nintendo Power magazine in 1990, and one of the girls in the game says she is "miss c island 1990".
I was actually wondering how many NES games there are that don't have a single sealed copy left in the world. Has anyone ever seen a sealed Flinststones 2? I would imagine that there are at least 25 (probabley around 50) games that either don't have any sealed copies left, or have around 1-3.

That makes perfect sense. I guess i am going to go with Dk Jr. Math being released 6/86, sounds good to me.

and that too makes sense. If i remember correctly, Nintendo Power 21 highlighted the release of startropics. SO, that release date for startropics has got to be wrong. Knock that list down to 90... not 91.
Also, has anyone seen a 5 screw dragon power? I'd like to know.

I'm back with more info. Here is a great link for the release dates. It shows DK Jr Math as 10/85 and Star Tropics as 12/90.
http://www.neshq.com/lists/nes.txt
Also, I have a little info on an interesting find. I have a gold seal, non-Rev-A, non-hangtag. Inside is the 3-screw version without security screws.
Also, I'll continue to check my hangtag boxes.
I have every black box with a hangtag as well as Capcom's first 5 releases: Ghosts 'N Goblins, 1942, Commando, Section Z, and Trojan.
I also have Spy Hunter and Burgertime and some others, but will have to check.

ah shit. there just had to be a dk jr. math box variant. Looks like i'll be looking for another.
Now tell me... are these both hangtab boxes? If they aren't is it possible that dk jr math has a three screw variation to go along with its 5 screw?
this is just shit, i can believe it. the hardest to find black box game has a variant.
oh well, way to keep your eye out. I'll post what my dk jr math has on it.

I have some of those variations as well. I will have to check the hangtag versions for the product codes. I also have a non-hangtag version w/ and w/o product codes. The one w/o the product codes was 5 screw that can be opened with a regular screwdriver. That game is Pro Wrestling. I will be checking on the others.
