Either I smell another tiger.com....or Zodiac has a rival...
http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-11728-1007-4-4-x
Reason why I bring this up, Sega is supporting them already...
Sega licenses several of its classic games to appear on Tiger Telematics' upstart portable.
Tiger Telematics has announced a deal with Digital Media Cartridge (DMC) to bring several classic 16-bit Sega games to its Gizmondo handheld. According to a joint statement, the two companies, DMC (which apparently has the licenses from Sega) will make a "16-Bit Sega pack," which will definitely include Sonic the Hedgehog and will likely include Outrun, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, and Shinobi. Tiger Telematics' subsidiary Gizmondo Europe will show off Sonic the Hedgehog at its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show. Currently only available in Europe, the Gizmondo will be released later this year in North America.

I don't just smell another Game.com--I can see it!
This thing can only be saved by a sub-$80 price and emulation capabilities (which of course probably won't happen).

(From article) "with an estimated street price in the $350 to $400 range". Ha ha, good luck Tiger.

That "City" game seems like it could be cool. Maybe if it turns out good and they drastically lower the price...

Are these guys affiliated with Tiger Electronics in any way? I think we're talking about 2 different companies here.

They're different companies - but I don't know why somebody would name a handheld company "Tiger" after the Game.com...
This thing will fail. It's to expensive, it will have less games than the N-Gage and there are DS and PSP.

The Gizmondo is more than just a Handheld. It's Video, Music, GPS, Web, Digital Camera...etc...
The price isn't at all extreme considering the price of Palms and PocketPC's which it mimmicks. Plus with game like City that utilize the GPS options, it would be extrmely unique. The game colors looks like it might amount to something along with a port of COnflict Desert Storm (Which me and two other buddies played the hell out of).
In short, I think most of the opinions here are empty, and not researched at all.
PS - I didn't bother reading the link ;)
EDIT : Just read the gamespot article about Sega supporting the system. Awesome!

The screen is what screws the Gizmondo.
I mean if you're going to toutthis as a PDA of sorts you have to do better than a 2" screen.
And it's not open source. The only thing that might have saved it is if it was open source for emulators and homebrew...

2.8" Screen. Just like the Gameboy Advance....Is that really too small? Worked well for Nintendo.
http://www.gizmondo.com is very informative on the specs. It's also a pretty nifty designed site.
Plus it has an SD slot on the bottom of it, which offers a lot of possibilities for Homebrew Development. Of course, all the systems offer a similar way to easily create homebrews. Sony's SmartStick, and Nintendo's media peripheral all open the door to home development. Just takes time to figure out the hardware.

Yea it's to small. No PDA sells good with that small a screen for that high a price.
And the DS makes up for the small screens by having 2 of them. :P

And the system has to be hacked which is NOT easy and DOES NOT encourage homebrew.

All-in-one systems have been proved to not quite be ready to be taken to market yet. Look at the N-Gage.

It says it uses an ARM 9, which I believe is the same processor the DS uses. Given that, I have to say it just isn't worth it - 1/2 the number of screens, same processor [and no ARM 7 co-processor] and twice the price, with none of the third party support.
Yeah, this will go far. LOL

The name doesn't make or break the product.
Examples:
"ebay"... what the hell is an "ebay"?? What does ebay even mean??
"Starbucks"... oh, this is coffee made by that damn fool from battlestar galactica???
How about "Jack in the Box"... I'm gonna get fast food from a child's toy??
Point is, many terrible names have gone on to become very successful icons of commercialism. And the bottom line is no one cares about how stupid a name is... if the service it provides is good, people will associate a positive feeling with that name. You could have a company named "jilpy klipper", and if the product you sold kicked ass, people would come to know your name and not even think twice about what it means or how stupid it is (case in point, ebay).

Tiger must be using the ARM-9 in a different manner, because the screenshots, well, are superior to the DS'. You say no support, but Microsfot is backing this project, Indie Games, SCi, FatHammer(Award winner for mobile games), Zen games....
*points out the Microsoft thing again*
I'm not saying that it will be the next big thing. Obviously it wont be, Sony and Nintendo are getting the mas majority of media coverage, whether publisshed or digital. The latest magazine article I read on portable gaming gave the DS and PSP four pages each of reviews, while the Gizmondo got a half a page. That's 8 times the coverage for the two main contenders. As always, it boils down to a large portion of the media catering to their readers, instead of bringing new interests to readers attentions.

why does gizmondo sound like a guy with a huge head from an old sci-fi movie? :hmm:
