I scored a Mr. Do's Castle game today only to notice something strange. The game had a small label on the front that said "Coleco Mr. Do 12K RLS.1 6/15/84" on it. I dont want to say it is a preproduction copy of it, and I dont want to destroy it by trying to pull it apart. Is there an easy way to find out? Is there an easy way to pull the cart apart? How many chips are supposed to be on the board? When I boot up the game, it goes right to a play screen in which it says "press fire to play" is this normal? I am curious,

........I went ahead and pulled it apart to notice two chips that had both the above typed on them. Does this help?

That's exact? RLS.1? Hmm, that definitely sounds odd...maybe somebody called up Coleco/whoever put the game out and got a bugfixed version? That's definitely got to be rare. Plus Mr. Do rocks bigtime. Wish I'd found this! :D

So describe the looks of the cart. Any sort of label or just a white typewritten one?

Hmm, sounds like a "lab loaner", since the printed code says RLS ("release" perhaps). These are like sort-of-prototypes sent to reviewers, etc. Were the chips placed in sockets, or soldered directly to the board? If they're socketed EPROMs, then it's definitely one of these loaners, or possibly a pre-release prototype.

Yeah, don't know what I was thinking about "bugfixed version" there LOL

The chips were in sockets. I oepned up another cart and it definately looks different. The label was small and in the front of the cart. It looked old and weathered.

But was it artwork or just typewritten/daisy wheel typed text?

As for uploading a picture...you need to host it somewhere online, get the URL of the picture, and then put [img] tags on both sides (second one will have a / in front of img

Which system is that for? If it's for a Atari system, send some detailed pics to the guy who runs www.atariprotos.com I'm sure he can confirm it for you, and he'd love the information. :)

But I'd say you got a true prototype! How did you get it, where, and how much?

Here is the story.....I had a good buddy(who is not into video games) give me his Colecovision stuff. I gave him a decent amount of money, but with the stuff I got 40 games, system, super action controllers, roller controller, steering wheel, and a colecovision game holder. I am selling the extras on the bay(as my buddy did not care what I did with the extras). Needless to say, I am keeping the proto! I asked him where he got his stuff, and he just remembers getting it when the system came out. I have no idea where he got the Mr. Do's Crazy Castle proto!
