So I go into Gamestop today to preorder the RE4 special edition, and only because it's a special edition and comes with all kinds of cool crap. If there were no collectors tin and all that I could gladly wait to pick this up at a discounted price, but instead I'm paying $10 more than the regular version on launch day for some nonsense.
Anyways, I also preorered Suikoden IV at the suggestion of someone else on the boards because it comes with a free artbook... another goodie I can't pass up. I also intend to buy the guide for that when I pickup the game, there's another $55.
While preordering RE4, I see something beautiful. Behind the counter on the top of the glass shelving is a box with a pretty girl on it, and it says Growlanser Generations. I've known about this game for a long time and it's only recently become available.. but it said "Deluxe" below the title and I knew I was toast right there.
Holy crap is this thing packed, but man is it expensive. I'm going to have to go back and pick it up when I get paid in 2 weeks for the hefty tag of $90... but knowing that it's working designs it'll definitely retain it's value, and if not I can use the watch it comes with to mark the day when I paid way too much money for something that'll get little to no use.
I'm the reason Collectors editions come out 8 months after a DVD is released, because I'm dumb enough to pay for something twice. Even though the new edition of whatever comes with tons of bonus stuff, I never use it, but it's there to say I own it.
So what are some of the most ridiculous preorder bonuses you've taken advantage of strictly for the trinket, or special edition strictly for the likely worthless addage?

I preordered true crime: streets of LA for the damn t shirt. I was going to pre order harvest moon on gamecube for the free cow. but it looks like one or two places still have the cow anyway.
Other than that, I never pre order unless there's a goodie anymore.
Oh, I preordered mario kart :Double dash, to get the bonus disc, so I could hock said bonus disc on ebay the next day for $25 LOL

SMT Nocturne and Phantom Brave for the soundtracks. Viewtiful Joe 1 for the art cel and t-shirt, Deus Ex: Invisible War for the T-shirt, Star Ocean for the poster, Arc the Lad Collection for all the goodies and an exclusive mousepad, Xenosaga for the artbook...there are lots. I tend to mostly buy games new only when there's a preorder bonus anymore. Otherwise I wait for the price point to drop. What really sells me is if there's a soundtrack. I'll preorder anything I'm interested in just to get a soundtrack! I'm a sucker...
Can't wait to get Suikoden IV too! I did it for the artbook!

Also, does anyone know if theres going to be a guide for Growlanser? I'd love to shell out a ton of money for a brand new Working Designs hardcover guide ;)

Ditto. I like my stuff to be limited! Hence why I paid over the odd's for Halo II, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and Donkey konga Etc instead of waiting for them to drop in price...

I have the two Lunar special edition boxes for the PS1. The had a special map in it, special manual with story and all, the pendant from the game, some figures of the game and I can't remember what else. Other gams I have are Breath Of Fire III for the PS1 that came together with an action figure of the red dragon and a T-shirt. And I also got a special edition from Castlevania SotN with an art booklet and a cd with the SotN soundtrack included. I'm very proud of this games, but I don't know if they are valuable. But I like this games and gladly paid more to get those special editions. Btw are there also special aditions for the PS2? I haven't seen any but I also can't play non-european games on the PS2 so I didn't look around.

I bought the so called Limited Edition of Pirates just so I could play the original version of Pirates and see some development video. Ok it was the same price but I had to have it as I'm a sucker for the game. However, the version was not the original but Pirates Gold. Gold, isn't bad, but I wanted the one I spent hours and hours with on the old Apple II. When I play Gold, I play my Genesis version. I love that one. :D

Game wise- I'll only preorder if the game has cool bonuses (shirts, soundtracks, figures, etc.) and that the game is a game I actually want to play and spend 50 bucks on. If there's two different versions, I'll get the special edition only if it has cool extra's or if I think it will be a collectors item (all of working designs sets). I do occasionally buy a special edition that doesn't meet my above stipulations. In that case, its just an impulse buy (the worst way to buy something LOL ). My latest being the RE 4 special edition (I do get a discount, so that may have changed my mind).
DVD wise- I'll only get a special edition if it's extras are worth it or if I didn't buy the regular edition first. I sometimes break my own rule when it comes to films that I love (spider-man, se7en, akira).

I always get the shirts and I never wear them. Right now, I have a bag full of game and rap music promo t-shirts/polos sitting in my room. Most of them don't fit, but I won't get rid of them.

I gave up. Most of these LE have nothing of a real limited edition (I mean LE Halo 2... hundred's of thousands of them... it's worth Sith!).
However a Kill Bill LE Japanese Boxset is mine :D
I have become very selective with these things - for exemple I changed my pre-order for RE4 because after giving it some thought I did not really need that sweet little umbrella they were giving away with it... plus I'd have look like a dork wlaking around with a RE4 umbrella.

If you don't mind waiting / paying a few bucks for shipping I suggest you order directly from WD (you can find the number on their website). By doing this you get special pins and a mini card deck that you can't get anywhere else plus your putting money directly in their pockets, and boy do they need it.

I preordered Lunar:SSC and Suikoden IV for the extra stuff. And if they're around in another month and a half I plan on buying the RE4 CE and Deluxe Growlanser Genrations. I'm also a sucker for limited edition and bounus features that I hardly use.
Just yesterday me and my girlfriend went to BB because she wanted Memento on DVD. She was going to get the regular version but I insited that she get the special ed. and gave her $10 bucks toward it. I know I'll probably never watch the extra stuff, but it's encoded in DTS and the package is really cool.

I don't go for the Special edition stuff that comes with shirts / art / wallscroll / cd / crap... Unless They somehow managed to make the game better or offer extra game.
"Special Editions" worth having-
Ocarina of Time / Master Quest preorder disc with Wind Waker.
Extra Disc that came with Mario Kart Double Dash
Mortal Kombat Deception: Kollectors Edition (even though MK should have been on MAT2)
Halo 2: Limited Collectors Edition (alright... its just because of the Snazzy case)
Half-Life 2 Special DVD Edition (sucks if you don't have DVD rom though...)
And of Course, the upcoming Doom III: Limited Collectors Edition.

The only game I've ever preordered for the bonus was Zelda: Wind Waker. I'm sure another one will grab me in the future. The RE4 LE sounds pretty sweet. The SMT:Nocturne I bought from Fry's Electronics was just a copy off the shelf and it came with the soundtrack. Do they all include it or just a certain limited amount?

Almost NEVER. I just pre-ordered Suikoden IV, ONLY because of the $40 pre-order price that comes with artbook, and because suikoden games ALWAYS stay at the same price or go up, no matter how long you wait (suikoden 3 is almost back up to $40 used at EB when it's in stock now)
The last time I pre-ordered any other games was EQ2, and Final Fantasy X (launch day, and such a regret that I think FFX is the sole reason I no longer get games near launch day)
I don't even let people buy me games for xmas/birthday anymore since they spend so damn much on cheapass $20 games.
I don't bother any more. Reason being is that I can usually walk into our local shop and the "limited edition prebook goodies" are still available if you ask.
Limited Edition Halo 2 pre-book offer. Yep...THAT was a joke. How many would you like to buy? Here's the tin with extra disc....here's the Halo 2 pre-book t-shirt....here's the Halo 2 pre-book calendar....here's the Halo 2 pre-book trucker cap. All available over the counter two months later. Some "limited edition"..... LOL

True!
Well, for myself...I've seen a couple games this year that I'd like to get the collector's editions for, but I can't really be bothered. Usually I just don't care. Take the special Japanese box sets for the MGS games...yay? They gain value steadily and seem to be a pretty good thing to buy if you've got money to waste. However, my money goes towards OLD and TRUE rares; games that are uncommon, championship carts if I can ever find them, odd format games, and old special sets with contrololers* packed in.
New stuff isn't garbage by any means, but it's usually overpriced. Especially if you're an early adopter.
*because they're not ALWAYS humorously crappy.

For me, with Videogames I do love the LEs and CEs but not as much as i do with DVDs. I just have to have the Limited DVD's, espcially if I really like the money then I am guaranteed to buy the extra stuff. Even though I rarely ever watch it, the extra stuff I mean.

I know this is a little off topic, but it's even going to get worse for me when the new HD-DVD or Bluray discs come out. I have around 100+ DVDs and will want every single one I already own on the new format. I guess since I am such a movie geek, that's why I do things like that.

I picked up the LE RE4 tin today and it's totally worth it. Gonna get Suikoden IV tomorrow and growlanser next week. If GL really comes with all that extra stuff right from WD, I'll pick it up from them and have it shipped directly to my house so it can't have the option of being ruined here at school.

I'm pathetic about promo stuff when it comes to tri-Ace:
I paid $90 to get the limited edition clear case Japanese version of Star Ocean 3 and 3 tiny cellphone straps (and I don't even have or want a cellphone).
When Star Ocean 3 came to the US, I didn't care to buy the US version, but I had to have the poster. I didn't want to pay for one on eBay, so I went to my local GameStop and asked them about it with full intention of NOT buying the game. I acted like "Oh, I don't have enough cash on me to get it right now...", so they just gave me one for free. :P Actually, it's true that I didn't have the cash to get it, but I never planned to come back and buy it there either. >)
Likewise, I talked another store into giving me an old Star Ocean 2 display sitting in the window. They had two there, so no biggie, I suppose.
I just broke my vow to never preorder stuff online just for the CHANCE at getting the Radiata Stories promo soundtrack. I'm not even guaranteed to get one, but since I'd buy the game right away anyway, I had to preorder and hope for one.

LEs and CEs: Maybe. If they're really limited, sure. Otherwise, I'll pass unless they get cheap.
Pre-order crap: Oh god yes. My floater $5 is going on at least a year and a half. Demos, shirts, caps, got to have it, and got to have it free. Example: Am I going to buy Getaway: Block Monday? Fuck no! But do I crave the demo?.... you bet your ass.
