Hello all,
Could anyone out there describe for me what the shrinkwrap on a SEGA Master System Game is supposed to be like? Seams? textures? Any first hand information? Thanks much,

Hmmm.
It was Christmas 1986. I was 16.
I seem to remember the wires being black twist tied, with clear open ended bags. I seem to remember the SMS itself being in a sealed bag, but NOT shrink wrapped. More of a folded thing. It had black lettering on it about suffocation warnings.
That's all I've got. LOL I'm not crapping you, and my memory of that morning is pretty clear. It came with the pack in Hang On/Safari Hunt, and the only built in game was the hidden maze game. Dad also bought action Fighter and Choplifter to get me started. :)

Dang that's a great memory! I was actually looking more for what one of the boxed carts were supposed to look like shrinkwrapped. Thanks tho!
I don't really collect games that are shrinkwrapped myself. I open my games. I just want to know how to tell a reseal from a factory seal. If anyone could help me out here, that would be great! Thanks,

i've had some sealed sms games. this is my personal experience. the entire box is shrinkwrapped except at the top where the hanger is. i didn't see any seams on any of the ones i had. i think others just had a black sticker across the part where it opens ala black box nes games.

The shrink wrap was actually "hard" as well. Not like the shrinkwrap you find on a Gameboy Advance game nowadays for instance, but more of a thicker plastic type if you know what I'm talking about.

I have a sealed RC Grand Prix, it has hard plastic shrinkwrap with the peg hanger protruding from it as mentioned. There is a seam running across the bottom of the cart, that's the only one I see. Hope that helps!

European SMS games were just sealed by the little 'Sega' sticker on the side of the box, and had no shrinkwrap.

to my knowledge sega games came two ways as picture above for hanging displays and boxed in packs of 6 thats inner contents had no shrink wrapping.

This is how every "new" SMS release I've ever seen has been here in Canada.

The SMS games had a stiff shrinkwrap, like you would find as a safety seal on a bottle of medicine. Get a bottle of NyQuil and take note. It's not pliable, but it is literally shrinkwrap (not just tightly wrapped and folded cellophane, like most games and CDs are packaged with).
I don't recall them ever being fully sealed at the ends (top and bottom), either. I remember them (the shrinkwrap) having an oval shaped opening top and bottom, which would make sense if the shrinkwrap was simply a tube of material that was not heat sealed to close the ends off.
Hope that helps.

Canada's releases were linked somehow with Europes. No games up here in Canada ever had shrink wrap, just a small sega sticker. We also had games released up here that never came out in the US. Battle Outrun, Basketball Nightmare, Cyber Shinobi to name a few. I think the Master System was more popular in Canada then in the US.

Not that it was THAT popular here (let's face it, the NES had a lot more market share in Canada in its day than the SMS, but at least it was better than the Atari 7800, which had a non-existent Canadian market share)...
Nevertheless, the SMS was better marketed in Canada than in the US. While the American distributor of the SMS was Tonka, the Canadian version was distributed by toy-maker Irwin. (meanwhile the NES was originally distributed in Canada by Mattel)

Oh man that brings back memories. I actually had the number of the Sega Rep at Irwin toys back in the day. I used to always call him up asking questions. I am sure he hated me but he was always nice.

Canada got European games because of the stipulations about English/French packaging - it was presumably easier/cheaper for Sega to import multilingual Euro copies than print new Canadian ones (except for a couple of early titles).
