I've decided that in a month or two when I get a decent amount of money together it will be time to get a new classic system, but I'm not sure which one to go with. The ones I'm thinking about are:

Atari 5200
Atari 7800
Commodore 64
Intellivision II
Game Gear
Turbo Grafx 16

I've never had any of these systems so I don't really know too much about them, and basically I'm looking for whatever will be the best deal price wise and have a good selection of quality titles. Any advice?

it really depends on your tastes...if you prefer new retro compared to the older atari and intellivision stuff id say turbo16..if you want a handheld gamegear rocks

5200: Getting harder to collect for, I don't think I've seen a 5200 game in the wild in five years or so. If you've never played one, I'd definitely check out those joysticks first before jumping in. They are unique.

7800: Cool because of the good quality games and the 2600 compatibility. I see more 7800 games in the wild than 5200 just because they are similar in size to the 2600 (I've picked a few up on accident!).

Intellivision II: A fun retro system, but tough to pick up loose carts because they never have the control pad overlays. And the controllers are another one that will take getting used to. Pretty easy to find cheap boxed games.

Game Gear: Fun for gaming on the go, especially for Sega fans.

Turbo Grafx 16: I just played one for the first time about a month ago and I was surprised at how cool the games were. There are many more people more knowledgable about these than I so I will defer.

COMMODORE 64: WOOT! Well, to be honest, if your goal is to collect a "complete collection" or anything like that, pass this by -- chances are you won't be able to pick up all 15,000+ titles for the 64. If you're looking for the best gaming bang for the buck, I say go for this one. But really, the C64 is all about gaming and not really about collecting. Mayhem, Icbrkr, myself, and several other people around here are big C64 enthusiasts and will gladly help you get started down this highly addictive road.

The TG is a pretty sweet system, especially if you're a fan of shooters.

The 5200 would be great, just make sure the sticks work. Again depends on taste
