Welcome to this week's Monday Morning MAME Club Posting. Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

The ROM of the week is: Great 1000 Miles Rally (available HERE (http://www.robohara.com/mameclub)!)
*note -- there are two zip files, grab them both and then run the USA version of them game
KLOV Link for the game: HERE (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8001&letter=G)

I picked this week's game because I didn't hear from the next two people on the list in time. We'll move forward next week. In the meantime, you'll get to play one of my favorite racing arcade games of all time!

Big Ed's Hamburgers, a hamburger joint that used to be near my home, had this arcade game. The burger joint has changed names three times (it's now The Miller Grill), but Great 1000 Miles Rally is still there!

While the arcade version I'm used to has a steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal, this game can also be perfectly played with a joystick! Moving left and right turn your car. One button does gas and another does brakes, although for the record I've never used or needed to use the brake button -- your car slows enough when you release the gas to make it through any turn in the game.

Right off the bat you'll notice how big the graphics are. While this makes for some cool detail, it also means you can't see very far in front of your car! To beat the 60 second timer, you'll need to learn how to read the "turn coming up" arrows that pop up. Half the time I don't even end up watching the road; I've played this game so many times, I can tell by the arrows how far ahead the turns are and how much to turn without even looking at the road.

Be sure to download both zip files in the directory this week and run the USA version. The other version has a few garbled graphics.

Currently, this game has more plays than any other game in my MAME Cabinet. I've beat the entire course on three credits before. Can you?

Whoops! I need to get this moved.

Another great game. It's a great arcadey-racer, and I found it funny how I would keep careening off the walls and bouncing back and forth. LOL

Flack, if you like this game, you should try Neo Drift Out. Different company, but it's the same type of gameplay.

this is the first time I have ever played or seen this game.

I think it is really cool. I love the car selection. Although they are fairly generic, the cars are cool looking and different than you see in your average racer.

The sense of speed is amazing. I also love how you can grab air and the powerslides can be pretty insane.

It took me a few tries to get the hang of the controls, but overall it is fairly easy to get them down and it feels comfortable even with a gamepad.

Cool game !

This is my favorite racing game on my cab.

It's one of the first mame games I got because I actually played it in the day (back in grade 7.. about 16 years ago).

It's hard to find good racing games from the early 90'd.. but this sure is one of them!

I will definitely try out that Neo racing game. If you guys like this one, also check out World Rally 1 and 2. They are the exact same game, but with different tracks.

I really wish the Miller Grill would sell me their cabinet. :) Personally I think the game is easier to play with a joystick than with a steering wheel, but maybe it's just because I've played it so many times that way.

I guess Stargate and me are in the minoriity of those who have never played this one. I like the numerous graphical effects (like the "blur" on the side of the road), but I have the same complaint I do with all games like this. It's too close to the action. Granted, it does give you plenty of waring as to the upcoming curve, but if it zoomed out just a bit, it would make life that much more tolerable. Still, it's fun once the layout of the track is figured out.

Which car does everyone pick?

Honestly, I've always used the default one.

I had hoped to end this week's MAME Club post with the reply, "I just won the PCB off of eBay!" but unfortunately I was outbid at the last moment. Oh well. Back to MAME for me. :)

It's kinda amazing that with that kick ass arcade of yours that you don't have this one, especially considering how much praise you gave it!

Heh... I've had this game for about the last year, but I just sold it last week. I had never played it previously, but I did enjoy it once I bought it... but once I beat every section, I really didn't play it anymore, and I needed the room for other games. It's definately a unique racing game, and very addictive.
