View Full Version : Games That Never Were.

Yes, yet another "what if" post, but with definite restrictions...
We've all hoped for games for a given console that never appeared, in a normal fashion. Which were among your "most wanted?"
In this case, the following conditions apply:
1) The game must be an arcade-to-home translation.
2) Said game must have existed before or during the "official" lifespan of the console. So no "Mortal Kombat" for the ColecoVision or Atari 5200.
3) This is the important one: The games you choose MUST have been produced by the company itself (first party), and so only games that would logically have appeared, by manufacturer, are allowed. So Tempest for the CV would not be allowed, just as Snap Jack would probably not have been made for the 5200 (it was a Universal game).
4) You had to have owned the console during its lifespan.
For the CV-
Cosmic Alien.
Snap Jack.
Killer Comet.
Donkey Kong 3.
Wizard of Wor.
Wild Western.
For the 5200-
TEMPEST!!!
Super Pac-Man.

How Coleco ever let Guzzler get away without a license, I'll never know. So put CV Guzzler on my list. Oh, and Do Run run too.

Top Skater for Saturn.
They could have easily just used the controller instead of a skateboard. Steep Slope Sliders was an arcade game and so was Winter Heat, both of which made it to the Saturn, Top Skater was actually slated for the Saturn, but I have no clue what ever happened to it. I would have loved to see Top Skater on my Saturn.

Can't believe that I am admitting this but I preordered "BATTLEBOTS" for Gamecube. I was crushed when delayed it, then eventually cancelled it. It looked really cool, the GBA version blows.

We NEED a port of the Arcade punch-out to the DS. That would rock so much.

There was a Sega arcade game I played where you flew around in a seat.... a Harrier game? I dunno. But it was really cool and would've been a neat Dreamcast game (if it was released before the DC)

WOW! Alright for that DC Planet Harriers screenshot! But you forgot to add...
Propeller Arena!
Tragically, the only reason that this COMPLETED game was never released was because it just so happened that it was scheduled to be released shortly after 9-11, and you could fly planes into buildings and blow them up with it!
Also for the DC, I still want...
Coaster Works 2!
The import version is known as Jet Coaster Dream 2, and I do own it, but I still want the English translation that we were supposed to get before Sega decided to kill the Dreamcast! It was even supposed to be released for the PC also, so what the heck happened to it? I wanna play it in English, dammit!

Unity by The Yak and Lionhead Studios. It was canceled. These are ugly screenshots that IGN grabbed from RetroVision. I know, IGN is the worst news source, but they had the closest thing to screenshots of the game. These were taken before music was even added. Unity was for the GameCube and was canceled due to the amount of work that still needed to be put into development, and the life expectancyu of the current generation of consoles. So my little indigo 'Cube will never see this parade of technicolor.

Unity & Propeller Arena were never arcade games.
How about Brave Firefighters, Emergency Call Ambulance & Jambo Safari? All 3 were announced for the Dreamcast on a 3-in-1 'Carrers' disk, but that bit the dust along with so many other late DC games :(

What was the name of that Sega lightgun arcade game from a few years ago that took place underwater?
Allways wanted a home version of Jaleco's Psychic 5 (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=P&game_id=9140). Don't think there ever was one.

I always wanted a home version of that newish Star Wars Trilogy arcade game. That and the arcade Harley Davidson motorcycle game. Neither one seem like anything a current gen console couldn't reproduce.

Never mind, I think I found it: The Ocean Hunter
Star Wars Trilogy was a Model 3 game, as was TOH, so both of these games could be reproduced on current systems.

How about a 7800 version of Gauntlet and Paperboy? I know the arcade and console divisions split in '84 when these games were coming out but they were developed before that so I think it would have been great to see them released on the 7800 including a pokey chip so we could actually have some kind of sound.
I think that Gauntlet would have been a lot better suited as the background is more stationary. I don't know a lot about the 7800 hardware but I've heard that it excelled with many objects on screen, at the same time, on a static background. So maybe instead of each level scrolling they could have limited each level to "rooms". That way each room would have a static background.
Paperboy probably wouldn't have been very pretty but I still think it would be very playable on the 7800.

Beatmania 7th Mix for PS1, inexplicably canned by Konami after it was already announced. And thus my dreams of playing Be Lovin' at home are dashed.

I wish that 3-screen Darius arcade game would have come about for any home console...somehow. LOL
Maybe the DS could do it with its 2 screens? Turn that sucker sideways or even link 2 DS units...especially for 2 player. :D

I would love to have a perfect version of Super GT from Sega. Still a very pretty game. More importantly it is an awesome racer. I heard Sega had a full version up and running on Dreamcast in a week just to show off the power of the console. I would pay a lot for that disc!

I would have liked to see Elevator Action for the 2600 actually be released. (Also Pleiades, but that wasn't a first-party game.)
Also, I'm not sure if this meets with the threads stipulations but I really wanted to see a home port of Kaos. I loved that game in the arcade and longed for a 2600 version. It was released by Game Plan, and I don't think any of their games were ported to a home system. So I guess Atari would have been as likely a potential licensor as anybody.
Naughty Boy was another favorite, but it was published by Cinematronics so I guess it would have had to have been a Vectrex game by the thread's rules. I don't know how well that would have worked out. :)
I really wanted a 2600 port of Arkanoid back in the day too.

Lol, forgetting about the PSP?
I for one would rather see a port of Taito's Rastan Saga III: Warrior Blade. Yeah, there's a PS2 game and I hear it's sorta RPG-ish, and in any case it's JUST NOT THE SAME. It's only a one-screen game. BUMMER. Let's hope Taito does a Warrior Blade type game for the PSP. \m/

Having Propeller Arena released would have been nice, as it's an awesome game.
I think Planet Harriers could be portable to Dreamcast, if not than xbox or something, so throw that on the list too.
Oh, and where's my Shenmue II US for DC? And Rent-a-hero US for Xbox, damnit?

Hmm...nice! I wonder if they ever had the resources to actually work on it (not suggesting they did; I'm just wondering about the size of the company. Their stuff was pretty darn polished for the time).

Hmm...I've recently read a rumor that Namco is considering an FPS update to the series. Perhaps this was something along those lines. I will say it was probably a good idea to postpone it - Dreamcast was good but I've had my fill of decidedly non-scary low poly horror games :D

I actually think the new Altered Beast looks pretty cool (well, what I've seen of it...er, not much), but yeah, I definitely think that Splatterhouse could easily go the wrong way. I don't like my games too serious very often, and Splatterhouse practically welded together the terms "kitschy" and "game" :D

Nope, I'm pretty cheap so I just watched a short clip online :D
I'll do as you say sometime, though, and see if I still like it. I saw a scene where the dude (just...yeah, that'll be his name for now) was surrounded by a bunch of monsters and executed a variety of light-play-heavy attacks. I didn't think it looked terrible.
I'm sort of hoping that they'll work The Scream back into this one :P (wow, I realized I remember the artist's name on that one; checked and it's Edvard, not Edward as I had thought...woot.)
How about Resident Evil Gun Survivor 2? I played this in a Californian arcade and it is awesome! Forget about that shoddy Biohazard shooter game for the PlayStation, this one was incredibly cool and well thought out.
The entire game used the Code Veronica game's world and engine, and you played the heroine from RE:CV. Actually, the entire game was like a fast-paced version of Code Veronica! You see, REGS2 had a gun for a controller. Not just to shoot at the screen with, this assault rifle controller was also used to move your character. It felt like second-nature to push the gun the way you wanted your character to move. Great fun was had mowing down zombies with the fast-action of this game which is completely unlike the normal slow RE pacing. To add even more intensity to the game, there is a time limit on each area so if you take too much damage or time then GAME OVER!
:( This would have been a truly great NAOMI port.

Truly, there are three games that should have been ported to either the Genesis or the Super NES:
The Simpsons (Konami)
Dynamite Dux (Sega) <--- This one got a Master System version, but an arcade-perfect Genesis port would have been the incredible awesomic.
Psychic 5 (Jaleco)
Psychic 5 has been mentioned already, but I've gotta say I loved that game as soon as I heard the attract mode tune. ;) I'll own it...someday...

Two things:
Splatterhouse FPS? NO GOD NO NEVER NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Now that I have THAT out of my system, there have been so many next-gen Splatterhouse rumors floating around for years that I've just plain stopped caring, until I see an actual in-game screenshot and get some official news straight from Namco that it's coming. I honestly don't think Namco's working on one, but you never know.

I distinctly remember seeing that there was something called "Pingo" that was actually a sequel to "Pengo".
Several gamers I've spoken to have also heard of this, but no one I know has seen it.
Aswald

Could it have been a souped-up ripoff of "Pengo?" In the early 1990s, I saw that ripoff of Street Fighter 2, with diagonal fireballs and such- someone could think that it was a sort of sequel?

Not sure if this counts, but according to KLOV, Professor Pac-Man, a trivia game, was supposed to have regular updates. It failed miserably, and no updates were ever released.
By the way, anybody out there actually see Prof. Pac Man? No one I knew ever had, and most people think I'm lying when I tell them about it.
Aswald
01-20-2005, 01:27 PM
I did. It was actually a game along the lines of those "trivia" games, such as "Fax," that were somewhat popular then. They did fairly well in bars and such (which is where you usually saw them), but in a "mainstream" arcade, which is where Professor Pac-Man was found, it was not really a popular genre.
Location, location, location...
