Might be a stupid question but I'd like to know the following:

There are a lot of games on the GG that are also available on the Mega Drive (Shinobi, Afterburner, Sonic 1 and 2). Are those GG games only ports from the Mega Drive games or are the really new games?

They're basically the same as the Master System versions.

The Shinobi games are GG exclusive. They are actually called GG Shinobi 1 & 2.

Good news about the Shinobi games!! To bad the Sonic games are the same as on the MD. I allreday have them for this system. Anyway, can't wait until I receive my GG and can start playing!

My bad, didn't read the anser correctly. I didn't even know there were any Sonic games on the SMS since I've never had one. But I really appreciate it if the GG games are from the SMS, so I have the chance to play some old retro games I didn't know before.

Then you're in luck... a LOT of Game Gear games are based on their Master System counterparts. Both systems share the same basic hardware (The GG can display more colours.)

You can even play Master System games on your GG with an adaptor... but you can't play GG games on your Master System due to the color issues.

Have fun! I just got a Game Gear a month ago and it's a blast.

Cheers

I believe that a few of the Sonic titles (definitely Sonic Drift 1 & 2) are GG exclusives. Tails Sky Patrol comes to mind. There are also small differences with most of them between the different versions. On a side note, Sonic 2 is better on the SMS. The smaller screen size makes certain things frustratingly unavoidable. It stinks.

There are a lot of good GG games. It is a great system. The GG version of Columns is the best one in my opinion. Also, as mentioned before, get a Master Gear converter if you are into SMS stuff. It works great. Nothing like a game of SpellCaster on the go!

Many GG games were pretty close to MS ports, many were totally different.

Example: Micky Mouse Castle of Illusion...basically the same.

Ninja Gaiden: Very different

Not at all...I mean yeah, they are 2-d side scrollers, but very different from the MegaDrive/Genesis games...and MS for that matter. I remember of the first 2 Sonic games for the GG, one was insanely easy and one was impossibly hard, but they were completely different games. I think Spinball was the only GG game like the MD version, and I'm probably wrong about that (crap, did Spinball come out for GG?)

The GG Shinobi makes the SMS one seem awful! IMO

I agree, Shinobi 2 The Silent Fury was my first GG I bought after I got my system...endless nights trying to get those crystals...

As for Tatsu, Welcome to the wonderful world of GameGear & SMS :)

I <3 my GameGear so much

As many have said, many GG Sonic titles were ported to SMS. The only few that weren't ported to SMS such as Tails Sky Patrol, Tails Adventure, Sonic Drift 1/2

That adapter for the SMS games sound nice. But I doubt I could get one around here. The SMS was never big in Switzerland so I guess it could be also a bit difficult to find decent games. In fact in my town I know only one or two stores that sold SMS or MD games at all (ok, all stores had Dreamcast games later). What about playing foreign games on the GG? Is there any limitation since my GG is a PAL model?

There is no such thing as a PAL model Game Gear. It runs at 60 HZ no matter what country you got it from (as is the case with most portable systems).
