I just came across this:

Disney Remaking Tron

Disney has hired screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal to fashion a remake of Tron, the 1982 film about a computer programmer who gets sucked into the parallel world of a computer program, Variety reported.

The original movie, written and directed by Steven Lisberger, was considered ahead of its time. Klugman and Sterntha (Warrior) feel that the world has caught up with Lisberger's original concept, making it ripe for redo, the trade paper reported.

Sternthal told the trade paper that the new conceit is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.

So, who thinks this is a GREAT idea and who thinks this is a TERRIBLE idea?
I know that the fans are going to be on both sides of this...

We'll have to see what plot develops and who they cast.

I don't think it's a good idea - the original movie was quite revolutionary for its time, and hardly anybody understood all that virtual reality stuff. And of course the technological effort was amazing. This can't be repeated nowadays, it's an old story now. And I have yet to see a remake of any film that surpasses the original version - the problem is that the original movies mostly did something new at that time, which others picked up and built upon. So when you see that remake, it just isn't anything new anymore. Only watching the original movie and keeping in mind when it was made can give you a hint of that feeling.

Although I would like this to be a good idea, I have a feeling they're going to throw in a bunch of modern internet lingo and it's just going to come across as being lame. One of the things I love about Tron is that all the computer animation has a distinct artistic style (rough geometric shapes and grids) that is a direct result of the technological limitations. Nowadays people can do anything on their G4 laptops at home, so everything could end up looking way to slick and ultimately unimpressive after seeing movies like Jurassic Park.

Just my opinion.

Remake? No, not a good idea. But a continuation of the original or a plot that acknowledges events that occurred in the original Tron? THAT would be cool. I don't want to see them "re-imagine" Tron. But it would be cool to see what the cyberworld has become since 1983.

"There was another User who arrived here Eons ago - Flynn was his name."

Even a line like that would help bridge the film from past to present.

I agree. Should be a sequel if anything. I loved the original, mostly for its incredible visuals.

On the other hand, the Game Grid wouldn't quite work at this point. The original was a live action version of the state of games in 1982, and it worked very well. It couldn't be the same in the now because games are reaching a level of realism that rivals the real world at times. Glowing frisbees just wouldn't work in an age where games are like movies themselves.

I used to feel differently, but some things have a time and a place. Tron was far ahead of its time, and has a beautiful DVD edition I might add, but is now sadly living in a world of obsolescence.

Recreating the virtual world of TRON would be easy. The hard part would be replicating Flynn's Arcade now!

Oh, he probably wouldn't own an arcade. He'd run an EBGames instead.

Planet Starbucks.. Colony Microsoft.. Intel plug plug plug..

A remake of a classic is becoming way to common and none of them work.

If they had made Tron 2.0 into the Movie like they were going to AND had Jeff Bridges in it then that would be worth my money.

Why not remake "Song of the South" and replace the reason it's on Disney's BANNED list with a 3D bear or dog or something Heck, throw in Shrek.. little cross over work.. make it more of an insult.

NOOOOOOOOOO-o-o-o-o-o!

I hereby volunteer to jump off the solar sailer into the massive rotating fluorescing computer core that is the Disney remake machine to stop this madness.

I only see one outcome for this, and it involves the 'word' XTREME1111111 :( :(

The only good thing that'll come out of this is that after the remake travesty is overmerchandised and forgotten, it'll make everyone see just how much better the 1982 version was. I cite how the original Star Wars trilogy has been lionized since the prequels have come out...

Remake of TRON? Dumb. The original movie was and is a classic, and I highly doubt that they would do it justice. Why recast the story? It was good enough the way it was, and Tron 2.0 took it to new heights.

Don't cover the same ground - continue the tale and TELL ME WHO THE CEO OF fCon IS!!!

It's a damn disgrace. Damn these remakes!

Well, at least I know that they won't be remaking the old Intellivision classic TRON games. I'll always have those.

It's amazing how close the original film comes to our modern interpretations of a virtual world - tech has come so much farther it's not funny, but say "virtual world" and you might just think "Tron," not "The Sims Expansion Pack" or "Halo 2." Part of tha probably is their needing to avoid sensory overload - they can put polygons onscreen but they want to limit how many can be on at one time so your mind isn't trying to track too many onscreen...hopefully they won't go apeshit with CG and throw in tons of unnecessary clutter offscreen...well, that's my hope, anyhow. The probably will anyhow.

The film also does a great job of capturing the look and feel of tech at the time...everything's got that green-screen, Grid Computer look to it. Very cool.

Agreed. We have seen too many tacky CG fests already. The original Tron at least was something more than that.

I'd like to think that this would never happen - that the screenplay would rot on a shelf somewhere, or that it might at worst become like Ender's Game or Indy IV ("Really, we're going to start any day now!"). But judging from Dinsey's recent track record with remakes, I don't think they'd let a silly thing like quality get in the way of making a movie. (Many say Eisner is to blame for all this.)

Disney has been sucking over the last, oh, 20 years or so, haven't they? They got too caught up with making money and throwing celebrities and Elton John tunes into their movies, and since they treat their employees like crap, the movies all end up being crap.

Although...and this is slightly off topic; I had heard that Disney, sometime soon, was going to release all their World War II propaganda films on DVD (Go to www.encyclopedia-obscura.com and read up if you have no idea what I'm talking about). That would take some serious nads, and if they did do that, I would commend them for it.

They already did that last year-On the Front Lines was released in May along with Mickey Mouse in Living Color Vol. 2, Tomorrowland, and The Chronological Donald, Vol. 2. And yes, it included "Education For Death" and "Der Fuehrer's Face" uncut.

I can see Disney doing this. They've already raped most of their classics with those abysmal direct-to-video sequels. Blech.

And that's roughly how long Eisner has been in control, you see. (Of course, it was down to $2 a share when he came in.)

The beginning of Disney's current era of suck is 1994, when Frank Wells died. Suffice to say, he was the one who kept Eisner from going over the deep end.

I'm ok with everyone, except for angelina jolie. She has something that i just don't like. Hell i'd prefer martha stewart in it (has horrible as that sounds).

Id much rather see a remake. I dont want Tron 2 to ruin Tron 1 the way T-3 ruined T-2. They did such a terrible job ending the story, I really dont want that to happen with Tron. I dont know how many times Ive said "I wish they never even made T-3." At least if they remake the first one, I can ignore it if it sucks.
