Anyyone here who has a subscription to GMR and/or XBN? Now that the final issues have been shipped, did you receive a notice about the remainder of your subscriptions? I haven't received anything and I sure don't want my EGM subscription renewed for another four years. I went to www.1up.com and both magazines have been removed and say that they are no longer serviced by the subscription company.

I'd like to know what's going on as well. I've got a two year sub to XBN of which I recieved about 5 issues. I really hope they don't add it to my EGM sub as I'm already subscribed to that until 2007.

I've got an XBN subscription, and I didn't see anything with my most recent issue. The 'Letters From the Editor' section states that it is the last XBN for a while, I dunno what that means, exactly.

Perhaps contacting ZD directly is the only way to go?

I'm keeping my last issue of GMR sealed in case it's worth anything some day. ;)

As for the subscription -- March was going to be my last month anyway. :)

Heh, looking on the bright side.

Well...I haven't heard anything at all for my XBN sub. Mine was free, though.

Hmm:

http://xbn.1up.com/

The Flash (when it loads) is the same as that for their GC page (or nearly so). As a matter of fact, the rest of the page is GC stuff, too...

some speculation is also posted over on XBN's message board:
http://lithium.1up.com/zd/board?board.id=xbn_comm

My subscription was free so I'm sure I won't get anything from them.

Then this year I also get a second free sub when I picked up halo 2 on launch night. I waited until just before the expiration date (about 2 weeks ago) and then sent it in under my wifes name. Figuring my sub was up in a few months, and this way we would get doubles for an issue or 2, but very close to a years extension. I'm sure nothing will happen to that one either.

My sub to XBN was also free. I think I'm finally overdosing on game magazines. I hardly even look at them except for a few. I think I'll let all my gaming mag subscriptions expire now when their time comes. As with several, though, my EGM sub doesn't expire for quite awhile yet...

My subscriptions to both were free. Truth is, I won't pay for video game magazine subscriptions any more because every time I would, the mag would go belly up within me receiving three issues. The worst was when I paid for three years of GameFan, only to get the LAST one ever as my only copy and no refund nor word from the distributor even after contacting them via email and mail. Oh well.

I have also "killed" at least three other mags this way. At least with these two, I don't lose any money if they are done for good ;)

Would you do me a favor and buy subs to 95% of the mags currently being produced? I will PM you with a list.

I actually called them within a few days of hearing that there would be no more GMR. The operator acted pretty shifty about the whole thing. I just asked if I could apply the credit toward EGM. She told me that she couldn't do anything about it and that I would have to wait until I got a notice from them before I could do anything.

Smells a little fishy to me.

You have to offer to help underwrite the costs! Great idea though LOL

I still have subscriptions to 5 other gaming publications (counting DP) but as time goes on I feel I'm getting burned out on all the magazines I read. Except for DP, I seem to barely glance through most of what I get and don't plan to renew any of my subs and won't be starting up any new ones.

Not counting DP, of course.

I'm just wondering if any subscribers heard anything yet. I haven't. I'm thinking that maybe we should start a class action suit against Ziff-Davis if we don't hear anything.

I don't know about that for those of us who had free subs... LOL

And no, I've not heard anything myself...

Yeah, even if it was a free sub it's still a paid sub!

I'm sure you guys will start receiving EGM. When GF went you started to receive GamePro. When Ultra GP went you started to receive NextGen (or something). Basically someone will buy the subscribers and you'll receive some kind of magazine, probably EGM.

Back in the day, my ODCM carried over the NextGen, and then the NextGen carried over to PSM (not the official one). Which is probably the worst magazine I have ever encountered.

Maybe now, but not at the beginning. I always thought they were to "fanboy"-ish, but the first couple of issues did have complete guides for FF7 & Castlevania:SotN. I thought it was a quality read until late into the life of the PSone/PS2 launch.

Nobody will be buying the subscription, as XBN was a 1up/Ziff Davis magazine and last time I checked they were still around. They'll just (hopefully!) shuffle us along to another of their quality magazines. :/

I had to contact EGM about my subscription and I asked about my GMR and XBX subs. This was their response:

"In regards to X Box Nation and GMER paid subscribers will receive another Ziff Davis publication, you will be notified via postcard as soon as the replacement publication is determined."

They STILL have'nt decided?

It's been two months now -- what's the big deal? Just pick one and dump everyone on it, no one will keep it anyway.

With everyone getting all of these free subscriptions its no suprise to why they went belly-up.

Yes my subscription was free also.

Yeah, I would be pissed were my subscription to XBN not free, but since it is, no big loss to me (though it was a quality mag). Most of them, as I understand, are more than happy to give them away since it gets bigger circulation numbers and thus, more advertiser $$$.

Well, the replacement mag to my sub of XBN arrived a couple days ago. I never recieved notice of what the mag would be or even that XBN was no longer being published. Sure, I knew it was done, but it would've been nice to here from the publishers.

Anyway, the replacement is a joke. I am now recieving "Sync" magazine. I'm hoping they will just refund my money for a few reasons, chief among them being that I have *no* interest in this mag at all. What little gaming related content is included is horrible. It costs $10 to subscribe to this and I paid $25 for XBN. Not exactly a fair trade off. Bleh.

Has anyone else recieved Sync? Did you recieve notice about it? For those with free subs, did you get a sub to another mag or did they just dump you?

i got a free sub to XBN with halo 2 LE. my first issue was also my last, unfortunately. it looked like a pretty good mag. hopefully i'll start getting EGM, my old EGM sub just ran out. (actually i never had a sub, they just started sending EGM's and CGW's to my house. maybe it was a gift from someone, but it still remains a mystery. either way, i didn't complain. :D )

I haven't gotten any such thing yet - but my subscription to CGW seems to have run out, and I'm not expecting the XBN one to have any life left to it.

I got my first issue of Sync a few days ago. Yeah, it's a pretty lousy magazine in my opinion. On the other hand, I got GamePro in the mail today...I haven't gotten that in about a year. I must've applied for a free subscription and forgot about it... :/

I got my first issue of Synch in the mail as well and immediately called Ziff Davis customer service and told them that I had no interest in the magazine whatsoever. I had the remaining issues of my subscription (about 16) transferred onto my Computer Gaming World subscription.

Griking,
Do you happen to have the number you called? I recieved a post card stating that if I wanted I refund I had to send a letter snail mail to their po box. I haven't had a chance to do that, or hunt down a phone number. I'd much rather call them up.

It's probably a case of them switching subscribers to their shittiest (content and circulation-wise) magazine so they can tell all the advertisers how many subscribers they have, and in turn generate more ad revenue before another of their mags goes down the toilet. As far as Gamepro, it's the only game mag I get that I feel completely comfortable throwing away as soon as I've glanced at it's pages. The pages are too rough for toilet paper.

I'm sorry that I didn't see your question earlier. Here are the contact numbers to contact Ziff Davis' subscriptions dept.

* US/Canada: (303) 665-8930
* International: (303) 604-7445

I received my refund this week also although I only had to contact them once. When they notified me that I would be receiving Sync, I emailed them and said I would prefer EGM or a refund, their choice. They opted with the refund.

I opted for Sync, not really knowing what it was. When it arrived, imagine my surprise to find a Maxim-wanna-be pub. My wife was ever-so-thrilled. x_x Fortunately, my sub ended with that issue.

I guess the reason it took many phone calls to GMR was because I tried to cancel my subscription as soon as I had confirmation that GMR's last issue was Feb 2005, which I got in early Jan 2005. I first went online to my account and cancelled the subscription (before it was removed), then followed up with phone call several weeks later. I was told that the check would be arriving in about 4 wks. And month after month of no refund check, I called back to get status update and got the same reply. I think it was after I got postcard that my GMR subscription had transferred over to Sync, I called again asking for my refund status. The guy who helped me found me in the computer under Sync and cancelled it for refund.
