well, i finished up cleaning that lot of about 350 NES games, and noticed i had 2 mega man 2's.

one is the normal purple capcom labeled one we all know and love, and the other once has a white label, with a silver rendition of mega man who looks like something out of the 1950's (not manga art, or the americanized 'hand gun' mega man), with a dark lava-y background behind him, and mega man 2 underneath the artwork, rather than at the top of the artwork, like the normal version.

the printing and label are the same quality and stock as the "real" cartridge, and it does have the proper period oval nintendo seal in the bottom corner, and grey warning label on the back. cart looks normal. the only curious thing on the label is that it mentions that it is licensed for use only with the nintendo entertainment system, and then something about mattel...? (i forget exactly what it is, i'll snap a pic when i get home)

PAL version? bootleg? or...?

The united kingdom and skandinavian version of mega man 2 had this art you describe. The german version also had another label.
So its not bootleg, its the original.
What number is it on the cartridge? It looks like this NES-XX-SCN for example.

You can view the art here:

thos are awesome! someone has that silver megaman as an avatar around here... I can't recall who though...

The German one is very funny. It's amazing how bad box art can get sometimes.

Hmmm, I like the German cover art a lot.....I'd have to say that it's now probably my favorite Mega Man 2 art since it is much more representative of the actual game. The U.S. one isn't that great, though I've owned the game for about 15 or so years now, so there is a lot of nostalgia attached to it.

IMO, the U.K. cover art is some of the worst I've ever seen - but it is funny as hell to look at. Are you sure you didn't get the German and English labels mixed up with your comment?

I like the German version the best, maybe because I'm German? nah...it shows the Wily Dragon and Gutsdozer accurately, and Mega Man looks better than in the American and Bristish version...MUCH better...

...but he's RED? RED?? You know, probably the German artist had prophetic qualities and foresaw the origin-connection with Zero; there you have it, the convoluted storyline was destined to happen, events are all pre-programmed in the robotic universe. Destiny for Robots. Frightening.

The British version is ridiculous, funnier than the American version with the 30's motorcycle helmet. Robots in the future? There was only one solution for the artist: make MM look like Tron.

The German cover of MM2 looks a LOT better than the NA and UK versions for previously stated reasons. I'd never seen that one before.

Ill never understand why capcom didn't just use the amazng japanese artwork for megaman.

Hehe in the uk version of megaman 2 i remember in the manual that they didnt have a pic of a certain enemy so someone just drew a badly drawn one in the manual. Quite shocking quality when you consider how much they used to charge back then for games.

I like the art of the German version the best as well. I got the French/Dutch version which has the same label as the one in that auction ( http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8157325444&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT )
