I myself love to collect Japanese Super Famicom games. I know that I will never play them, but I just like to have them. Do you think that it is bad to buy games that you know you will never play?

No, no I don't. I also have a bunch of super famicon games that I know i'll most likely never play threw. So no, your not alone on this.

If enjoy what your doing then it can never be bad. Just because you collect games, doesn't mean you have to play them all. I'm sure theres plenty of people here, who strive for complete collections, and don't play half the games they buy.

I think that if you're going to collect them you SHOULD play them.
I went through the trouble of completing the US SMS collection, and I'm gonna give it the respect it deserves. even if it means it'll take longer to play it then it did to collect it.

I'll side with what Drexel said above, but for me personally, I wouldn't blow money on a game that I'm never going to play. At least in my case, the money's too hard to come by. On the flipside of that yet, I have got a game or two for a system I haven't gotten yet (PS2), but fully intend to procure soon. But that's as close as I come to getting a game that I'm not gonna touch - I only get games that I can't play yet.

Stamp Collectors buy stamps they will never mail a letter with, what makes a Game collector any different?
I play games I want to play, but in all honesty, I've played maybe 15% of my entire collection. I find more fun in "the hunt" than actually playing the games I buy, and working 11 hours a day leaves me with little time to play anything.
So yeah, don't feel bad, I stlll buy every 5.00 PS2/Xbox/GCN game I find and usually don't bother even opening it.

"I'm sure theres plenty of people here, who strive for complete collections, and don't play half the games they buy."
That's exactly how I am. I buy TONS of NES games that I know I will never play. I test them once to make sure it is the correct game and is working perfectly, and then I toss it in it's spot alphabetically, where it will remain for years to come. LOL
I only play the games I like, which is probabley less than 20% of my collection.

I collect coins I will never spend LOL
Bad, no, it's not bad. Then again, I play every game I get.

Same here! I also still haven't gotten around to buying a Super Famicom. I've got a few RPGs for it that I won't be playing any time soon, but I'd rather have them than not.
I've got a number of strat guides from Japan I'll likely have no use for, as an example. There ya go.

I used to buy everything and keep lots of stuff that I wouldn't play. A few years ago I realized that a lot of the things I had I simply would never play and had no interested in. For a gamer, what's the point? The games were made to be played IMO. So I've sold off everything I knew I'd NEVER play. Just GONE. I only keep games that I think will interest me now, and if I play them and don't like them, I sell them immediately.

I buy some games that I intend to play but never quite get around to. Mostly those RPGs - they take way too long to complete. Second-tier ones like Arcanum and stuff...it's like, I think about the time commitment and I go "meh."

Pretty much my rule about buying games (at thrift stores and flea markets anyway) is that if they are a good price, and I dont already have it, I buy it. Whether or not I will ever actually play it only becomes an issue if the price is a little bit more than I usually pay. But I'll pay a buck or two for any game as long as it's in good condition and I dont own it.

I've recently (well...since the last CGE...) started collecting Japanese Megadrive games in addition to the US games I've been buying for a while. As I'm hoping to lean Japanese, I should be able to play a lot of them, though I play all the ones I already have 'cause they're mostly shooters. (Ahh, Dangerous Seed...) If I start buying PAL games, though, a lot of those will prolly be tough to be able to play -- might have to find myself a PAL TV, which I hear is no easy feat in the states. @_@

The Atari 2600 is the only system I do this with. All my other systems I have games soley based on if I want to play them or not. Basically, I collect 2600, but just buy a lot of games for other systems.

i buy sealed games that are of some of my favorite series, like i wouldnt mind some sealed bust a move titles, i would say mostly the only games i buy that i dont ever really plan to play are sealed and other random titles that are to help complete a collection. any other game i buy and dont like, i sell it, because it generally pisses me off just looking at some shitty title next to all the good stuff.

I like to think that one day I'll play all the games that have come into my hands. But crikey, that's going to take a long time.

I too probably will never play half the games I buy, especially for my NES collection. I'm pursuing the whole collection, but there are enough crap games that I don't want to waste the time. For example, all the baseball games except Baseball Stars, Bases Loaded, and Basewars are crap. Why would I play them when I could play Baseball Stars or MLB 2004? The answer is that I won't, but it won't stop me from buying them so that I can amaze my friends with a wall of videogames.
Also, I collect pencils I never plan to sharpen. <---- Dork

i try to open everything and at least give it a shot
i see nothing wrong with buyings games that i have no intention of playing
while they are fun to play, games are still nice to just look at on a shelve

Yup, That sounds like me. I have a terribly bad habit of this but I cant seem to stop it. It's kinda like crack, though I have never done it before I can't shake the habit.

I think the main word here is 'collect', like all other collectors even outside the videogame circle, we like to accumulate items but not necessarily use them. Most collectors I know just like to display their collections and do not touch them or allow them to be touched by others for fear their possesions may be broken or lose value....video game collecting is I believe getting to this degree. I try to use emulators instead of some of my rarer games, you never know what could go wrong. As others have stated here I think most of us here own games we may never play but there is nothing wrong with this.

Only for N64 cause I'm trying to get a complete US collection. I'm also trying to get a complete SMS, but I'll be more inclined to play those games than some of the N64 ones, like the wrestling titles.

i dont play most of my stuff. dont have time really, i spend most of my free time looking for other games!
i bet i havent even played through 5% of my games. at 3200 thats not that many i guess, but i like finding stuff for cheap...thats why i collect in the first place.
i have two other collections too, one is VW toys. this one wont ever return the money ive invested i dont think. and when the bottom falls from the video game market ill have a bunch of those that arent very valuable too, as im trying to complete many different systems.
the one thing i collect that i know i will alway get my return on? currency. anymore it is difficult though, as the govt is shredding anything that isnt the new style stuff. glad i got into that when i was little and got a good pile of it now :)
so two big stacks of plastic and a stack of paper. itll always be legal tender...

I have hundreds that I won't play but I too am collecting for the NES set. I haven't updated my list but I've got to be down to less than 100 needed.
Also, I have a large pile of RPGs for multiple systems that I hope will last until I retire in 40 years LOL.

I have intentions to play every game I buy, but there are many that sit untouched, unopened for days....weeks even.
Then there's the games I don't ever want to play, but if they are cheap, then they are mine!
Like may collectors, I enjoy the hunt, and staring at what Ive accumulated. :)

No offense to those who do it, but I think it's stupid to buy a game with absolutely no intention of playing it. Makes me sad thinking of all the games some you have just sitting there, when I personally would love to have them and play them. o_O I mean, I love how Super Famicom packaging looks, but the best thing about them is playing all those great games that never came to the US.
As for sealed games, I would buy them, but unless it's something brand new or not worth keeping sealed (in which case I would open them), I would sell them and use the money to buy an opened copy and some more games.
Anyway, I have a ton of games I've only gotten the chance to try out, but I have full intention of playing everything eventually. Sure, some of the games suck and I know before getting them that I won't seriously play through them, but I still want to give them a try and play them for at least a little while.

I still have a sealed version of Baldur's Gate with expansion pack for my PC. I bought it like 2 years ago and I still have it on my desk shelf. Nice box. This is out of the ordinary for me. If I buy a game, then I will play it. I don't really collect games, I tend to collect systems. Now if you'll excuse me, that Baldur's Gate box is about to be opened.
