Hey everybody.
I wasn't sure if this has been a topic previously. I did a quick search, and found nothing.
I was reading alot of old posts, and saw one where Joe states: "one of the 10 holy grails of video games." (He was referring to Air Raid for the 2600.)
I am curious to know what the other 9 'Holy Grials" would be.
Anybody know? I guess it is sort of subjective, but lets hear what you have to say..
Off the top of my head, I can only think of
Air Raid (if Joe says it... then I say it.)
NWC Gold NES cart.

what else.
thanks

There are many Holy Grails in the Video Game collecting world, it really depends what you collect for.

Here are the answers you will see most often however:

NWC 1990 Gold Cart
Air Raid
Video Life
Metal Slug
I also know there is some Neo Geo game that sold for $10,000+ , but I foget the name of it right now.

Here are my Holy Grails though:

Stadium Events
Myraid 6 in 1
Cheetahmen 2
All of the Panesian Games
Caltron 6 in 1
And of course the NWC cart

ehh... totally depends on what you collect. I could pretty much care less about atari and really only collect sealed nes, whereas some people couldn't care less about what I collect. Collect what you like and don't get sucked in by hype and top-ten lists IMO. It's all just a big dick-swinging contest after a while anyway.

Yeah.

It DOES depend on what you mean by a "grail." Personally I could care less about many of these so-called grails; I tend to look for stuff that I want and which will be hard or expensive to procure. IMO anything that's coming up on eBay once every two years or worth over $200 is pretty close to a grail, yes?

That said, I'm also curious as to what Joe says are the 10 grails. I suppose this means items that have high desireability - and hence more than a few were made - if it can be called a grail.

I'd also put the Euro Kizuna Encounter in there. It's not possible for most folks to get one, as the apparent rarity and record-setting price tag are too big a barrier to surmount, plus a "Euro Kizuna Encounter Owner's Club" would be very small...yet this one's had enough coverage thanks to said ridiculous price (I don't even think Neo Geo AES *prototypes* had gone for that much) to be considered a potential Holy Grail.

For myself...hmm, the use of "Holy Grail" seems odd. My holy grail would have to be something that is only rumored or hoped to exist LOL

#1 on my list right now is Ninja Golf
#2 is the Japanese bowling ame for the Virtual Boy (close to a real grail)
#3 on my list is just about anything on a disk that works from the C64 (I miss my old system :( )

Kizuna Encounter, I believe. Hell if I know any more about it, though. Anyone actually know how many of these were made?

My personal "holy grail" would have to be Tetris for the Megadrive. Think Tengen Tetris, only nearly every copy was destroyed before they even shipped. Something like four copies are known...

Look for the scans of Joe's column "Collector's Closet". Most of the older ones are somewhere on this site. One of them features the 10 Holy Grails.

4 copies of Kizuna known to exist,
and its worth a considerable amount more than $10,000, last copy sold for $12,500, but i would suspect that it could go near $15,000 next time one is sold off.

I'd also say a few sealed versions of some games would be cosidered as rare?

I have a factory sealed PAL Suikoden I which as far as I know could be one of a kind... Surely that would count as being a holy grail if what you collected was sealed PlayStation games...

I have many sealed games which could technically be one of a kind's nowadays...

I would personally consider many rare games still in sealed condition as being my holy grails...

digitalpress
01-14-2005, 07:49 AM
I've got loads of sealed games (most not by choice but due to lack of play time) but I never consider those among my personal holy grails unless the item behind the shrinkwrap is a holy grail. I've got stuff as old as 1982 still in shrink but some of those items are pretty easy to find without it.

But maybe that's just me.

I'll let people see what I chose when my rare games article makes it into RetroGamer. I think I ended up with 16 choices (for 16 different formats) and some of them really are in single figure existance (and yes, Kizuna Encounter and Megadrive Tetris are in there).

C64 Seafox on cart
Intellivison Tutunkham and Super Cobra

Blame me, it's my section :P

Have a look at eBay Australia, it turns up there more than anywhere else (the history being Activision sold a huge job lot of spare carts to HES who proceeded to take a long time to sell them off).

Finding one COMPLETE however... that's a 7 or 8 right there.

Despite what Joe says in the article, I consider Dracula X one of my personal holy grails. :P It's an extremely good game, it's highly sought after, and it's very valuable; that's good enough to be a holy grail to me. I never expected own a copy, but I got lucky with the price.

I'd say the biggest holy grail out of all of my video game related stuff would be not be a game but my Star Ocean Perfect Sound Collection. It's probably like Rondo of Blood in that it's not the rarest thing ever, but it's likely to only go up in value (and it's already pulling $100+).

Like I always say, I care much more to have a very valuable game of high quality than a crappy game that I'll never play that costs $10-$30 but is supposedly more rare than the afforementioned stuff. Of course, the extremely rare stuff is expensive, but unless I get very lucky, I doubt I'll ever have anything like Stadium Events or the Panesians or such.

MMM... Sign me up for all those big swollen dicks! :-P ;) :P

Well I have 32X Spiderman & VB Jack Bros, and I have had both ever since they were first released. But I think those lists need to be updated. Panzer Dragoon Saga should be on the Holy Grails list, and Radiant Silvergun should be on the Unholy Grails list. Also, sealed SNES Chrono Trigger should be on the Unholy Grails list, and sealed Hyper Duel should be on the Holy Grails list. Actually, Hyper Duel should be on the Holy Grails list, period. I'm currently making payments on the only factory sealed copy of it that I know to exist, and the total cost for me is gonna be $300 when I finally get it all paid off. So double what a used one goes for. Not as expensive as a sealed Radiant Silvergun for some strange reason, thank God, but definitely RARE AS HELL!

So according to the list Dragon Ball GT Final Bout had a run of about 10,000 copies and is considered a "holy grail". That would make it equal to Panzer Dragoon Saga. So it should be somewhere on a list. :P

GT WAS arguably a grail in 2002, but it was rereleased in 2004 and is now common as dirt. The original release still brings *decent* money, but nowhere near what it used to.

PDS is a kick ass game, but it's more of an Unholy Grail if you look at the number on ebay at any given time.

Well, the idea behind not paying for an "Unholy Grail" is pretty solid in that a re-release or remake can bring the value of the original down in any point in time, but I take issue with the notion that I should be buying Buster Douglas Boxing or Slap Shot instead of Phantasy Star, say. Of course, I didn't pay $50 for my copy of Phantasy Star, though...probably nowhere near that :D

Well OK, point conceded on the Panzer Dragoon Saga. I guess it's more like the domestic equivalent of D&D Collection. It's scarce, but it's not rare, and it's in high demand. But tell me this, is Hyper Duel really as rare as I think it is, and is a factory sealed copy really worth $300 to anyone else besides me? I'm very anal about only buying factory sealed games, just to be the first to open them up and play them, but I've never payed $300 for a game just to open it up and play it before. So I'm really wondering just how rare a factory sealed copy is, and if I'm really gonna be able to let myself open it to play it.

Holy grail to some people is to simply own a mint final fantasy 1. Its all in the mind of the beholder. To me a real general holy grail is something of a pandoras box something you'd find in the next sequel of indiana jones. So saying that I think of a true holy grail as those games that achieve usually but not always $1000 + a game that is unrelead, a game that is wanted by many collectors willing to pay a huge sum. eg :bidding stops at $500 for most of the collectors and then a bidding war between only 2 or 3 people carry it to a $1000 is not a true holy grail.
A game that could not be bought retail , like a prize or heaven forbid a lost proto that is almost complete but was lost in the midsts of time with substational evidence to prove its one of a kind and also that its not a replica and uses coding technolgy surpassing anything of its time and even better its part of a franchise.
So lets call it the lost ultima sequel, never released on any console and known as say ultima 0. Created for the 3do m2 and all info was lost on it and then one day the programmer dies and all documantation and source and game go onto auction as part of a will. This would be a hell of a holy grail. Back to reality though 8-) My personal holy grails though incredibly ambitious and I may never live to see the day include things such as a new mint halycon player with the 2 sealed games for it and throw in a sealed 32x daraxide and I will feel peace that will last a long long time. (never could afford it though unless i win the lottery)

It's all very subjctive...

For me, a sealed 2600 Fathom signed by Rob Fullop would be the Ultimate Holy Grail. However this is purely based on events in my life. As the cart isn't really that rare and Rob is still around to pester for an autograph, it is attainable. That said I'd just about sell my soul for this... so if anyone has one around, I'll fgure out a way to get you a King's ransom for it...

I have never heard of Doubisa Challenge or Star Scape. However, Delisoba Deluxe for the Saturn can pull in an astronomical amount of money. It has gone down in value recently I believe, but I know of people who have paid well over $1000 for a copy. Also Waltz for the Saturn is very rare and expensive.

I don't really believe Silvergun to be that rare. There are always tons of copies of it about! Taromaru is quite rare, but there are a fair few floating around. You just have to wait a little bit, and one will come up.

Not long ago videogameimports.com had a whole load of them, including several sealed copies!

Crows, again, it can pull in a bit of money but is not too hard to track down. I know one person who has about 8 copies of it ...

Ah, videogameimports.com, I love them! They do tend to be very expensive for us Americans on some things, but they're very reasonable on others, and they sure do have a knack for locating the impossible to locate! That's where my factory sealed Hyper Duel is coming from. And I must say that they are very good people too. Lee has been very patient and very understanding with me about holding that game for me while I make payments on it. So I don't feel bad about giving them my business at all. I did end up cancelling one of my orders with them not too long ago, because I found what I was looking for somewhere else for only half of what they were gonna charge me for it, but Lee didn't even complain about it at all, he just congratulated me on the find, and wished me luck in my continued collecting pursuits. At first, I thought that he was a bit of a scalper, and maybe he is to a degree, but considering that he specializes in the rarest of the rare the way he does, I can certainly digress that he deserves to be compensated for his services! He's gotten me stuff that everyone else told me was impossible to locate!

Iron, I have an unsealed copy of Hyper Duel that I'd be willing to sell to you.

By anyway, my holy grail would be my collection of Sega Saturn Magazine. 1-37. I think that's pretty rare to get and find... and my issues are in great condition who have been owned by ONE guy only before me. He bought them as they came out and have a year and half ago sold them to me.

It cost me mucho $$ but I'm proud to say I own one of the finest gaming mags ever printed... the UK Sega Saturn Magazine!

I believe that it was a preorder bonus for either Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles. I knew someone who had one, but his stepdad was a designer at STI, so he got lots of stuff like that. It was definitely a promotional item, though. I'd love to get a copy, myself; it's got fairly nice arrangements of the Sonic Spinball soundtrack on it. :)

Complete copies of Dragon Warrior 1-4 and Mega Man 1-6 would do it for me actually. I have most of them, but the later ones are pretty pricey.
A NWC cart would be cool, but I'd rather have the 10K it's worth to buy more games.

My Holy Grails would be Stadium Events and Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak, as I am trying to get every official NES release (I'm not going for all the unlicensed games). I already got a copy of Flintstones on the way in the mail...but I doubt I'll ever get Stadium Events as it sells for around $1,000. I may have to just settle for the PAL version of it and call it good.

How is the Vectrex ahead of an Adventurevision? They are common and easy to get, and not nearly as expensive.

Not around here. Plus, like I said, in no particular order.

Still, it's the only thing on the list I could afford to go after now. LOL

Didn't see the "in no order" part, my bad. :) Not many are around here either, but I think they are all over eBay, in the $100 range or so.

It's the shipping that makes it expensive. How much does it weigh?

Mangia is the only thing I would find around here, really.

I am just guessing, but I'd say around 15 pounds or so. I got mine loose for $100 shipped, but that was around 1991. Still, they are not more more today.

I rarely find almost anything in person, I mail order. :)
