View Full Version : Are there any "left handed" Xbox controllers? Sol

I have a problem. I got used to playing FPS games by playing Q3A on Dreamcast, as well as Bond on N64. I grew accustomed to aiming with my left thumb, and moving with the right.

Up until recently, this hasn't been a problem. Most games let you reconfigure your controls, or at least offer a "southpaw" option. Keep in mind, I'm not left handed, I only play that way.
Anyway, the problem now is that games are coming out (on Xbox at least) that only offer a single control option...which is right handed. Mechassault 2, Tron 2.0, etc.

I emainled BVI and Day 1 about their games and the lack of control options. Day 1 said they were aware of the problem and would address it in a patch ASAP, but BVI (Tron) said that they had no plans to fix the oversight and offered a refund instead. I don't want a refund on Tron, and I don't really want to wait a month or more for a Mechassault 2 patch.

Is anyone aware of "left handed" Xbox controllers, or even programmable controllers that let you reconfigure the sticks? I tried altering one of my own (cutting and retracing/ soldering new leads), and managed to swap the functions of the sticks. The problem was that, due to the physical orientation of the stick mountings (which are reversed from each other), the resistance values were now inverted from what the console expected and resulted in both sticks having reversed controls in all axes!!

Anyone have any ideas? All I need to do is have a left stick look/ right stick move option. More customization would be nice, but not imperative. Without a solution, I'll have to unlearn and relearn controls...and that would suck.

The closest thing I can think of relevant to what you're looking for is the Gamester Phoenix controller. I believe they had some sort of switch for the sticks. What I'm not sure of is what the switch did exactly. I think it may have only been to invert the y-axis of the controller. That's all I've got, sorry!

I can somewhat relate to your conundrum, having perfected FPS games on the Dreamcast's Unreal Tournament (where it made more sense to free-look with the stick than with 4 buttons). As far as getting a quick fix for MA2, be sure to post it on the Xbox forums and if enough people get behind it, I'm sure they'll squeeze out a patch in no time. Halo 2 had a big glitch when it was first released (it cut off the sides on many HDTVs). People got together to bitch about it (although Bungie already was aware) and a patch was out within 2 weeks of release.

You could always try this with an existing controller

Hope that helps.
