View Full Version : What's the diff between DualShock 1's and 2's?

A couple of my PS2 games don't work with a Dual Shock 1 controller. Syphon Filter and the Getaway.
It pisses me off, because I have some extra original dualshocks, and I would be cool with just using those.
Anybody know any other games that don't work with the old dualshocks?

The main difference between the Dualshock 1 and 2 controllers is that the shape buttons (square, circle, and so on) are pressure sensitive on the Dualshock 2. In GTA3, you can press the throttle button lightly and drive slowly or press it hard to go quickly.

To answer the title (but not necessarily the question within), the main difference between the DS1 and DS2 is the the DS2's buttons are analog in addition to the sticks, meaning they're pressure sensitive. Anything else, as far as I know, is merely cosmetic and financial.

You are dead on about the financial part, I was at a Wally Mart the other day and saw PS1 dualshocks for 12 bucks Canadian, I remember not long ago these were over $40 dollars!!

Ugh, so let me guess - this means 2s can't be used on an original PlayStation? My original controller seems to work well enough but all the same I'd to try out a new one. Last time I checked eBay it seemed all that was available were the 2s. :P

I use my DS2 on my PSX and it works just fine. I think the only incompatiblity is putting DS1s on PS2.

There was some issues about PS1 dual shocks won't work on certain PS2 titles. Didn't know if that was true or not..

Kingdom Hearts doesn't accept them, or at least it didn't when I tried it.

in my opinion NOTHING. sure the DS2 has "pressure sensativity"or whatever the hell sony tries to say makes it different from the original Dual Shock but its rarely put to any real use in anything other than racing games and even then I really cant tell any difference and neither can 90% of any other gamers out there.
I bought a new blue PS1 dual shock control pad for only $10 and it works with every game i have except front mission 4 i think it is. why would I want to pay $25 for what is virtually the same freakin thing.
anyway I think the whole pressure thing really has very little effect in any of the games that attempt to put it to any use but thats just my opinion :P

Reinforcing what was mentioned earlier, pressure sensitive is the difference.
Some PS2 games actually look for that, which is why you're finding that PS1 DS controllers don't work. Believe me, I've dealt with that a lot since most of our customers are always trying to buy PS1 controllers for their PS2 since they're cheap.

I think the shoulder buttons are supposed to be pressure sensitive too. The adapters that allow you to use a PS2 controller on the Gamecube use them to emulate the analog triggers on the GC controller.

Socom 1&2 will not work with a DS1. Especially the shoulder buttons.

you can use the DS2 on a PS1, however *I* find that you need to press hard on the buttons for it to register

Mad Maestro depends extensively on the use of the pressure-sensitive DS2 buttons. But yeah. It really depends on whether the game is looking for DS2 functionality or not. I don't know whether there are games that require use of a DS2, but don't actually take advantage of the pressure-sensitive button feature.

In addition to the presseure senstive buttons, I've also read that the dual shock motor works better in the DS 2.
And why has'nt anyone mentioned the WEIGHT? The DS1 was a HEAVY controler, especily when compared to the original PlayStation controler. The DS2 is very light. I was thrilled the first time I picked one up. :)
