Hi everyone, I am a very large fan of the original X-com game, I played this game for years on my PSX, beat it several times. Anyway anyone know if this game will ever be updated. I remember a few years ago reading something about a game that was very similar coming to the next gen systems but I have not heard or been able to find anything since.

Thanks

There are several similar games on the PC, but none as good as the original X-com. The Playstation did get the sequel, X-com: Terror From the Deep.

Well, as you may know, there are two direct sequels:

X-Com: Terror From the Deep (PC and PSX)
Xcom: Apocalypse (PC only)

Terror from the Deep was only released in Europe for the PSX unfortunately. You also find a few references on the net to a game called "X-Com: Enemy Unknown" but sadly this is only the renamed title of UFO Defense for the Europeans.

The Third game, Apocalypse, was only released for the PC and was somewhat different. It's not nearly as fun, as you're in one big city the whole time, and you can play RTS or turn based styles...I didn't care for it as much.

After the release of Apocalypse, Microprose got bought out by Hasbro Interactive. Very bad. They then released a flight sim based on the hunt and destroy missions of X-Com, called "X-Com: Interceptor. Tragically, it was heinously awful.

Following that, one more X-Com game came out. The game was called "X-Com: Enforcer" and it's the only one I haven't played, but it's a 3rd person action game based on the X-Com strategy series and I've heard it's awful. I still want a copy though!

It sold like crap, was for PC only, and when you preordered it, you got the "X-Com Collector's Edition, which was a 2 disc freebie that had X-Com: UFO Defense, X-Com: Terror From the Deep, and X-Com: Apocalypse for free, redone for Windows 95. Yes, that's right, Windows 95. nfortunately, the disc will NOT run on Windows 98 or any later version, so I can't play it on my PC.

Interestingly enough, one more game was announced for the PC, called X-Com: Alliance. A poster for it even came in one of the games (Apocalypse I think?). It was an X-Com FPS with squad based tactics and strategy, and you could see the FPS screens of your teammates whom you controlled in real time. They got as far as releasing scren shots when Hasbro bought up Microprose and canned the whole project. It was in game store computers for YEARS as TBA, but it finally vanished (much to my chagrin). I've downloaded screenshots and clips of it, but I don't think even a beta exists (if it did, I'd procure it!). It looked GOOD for it's time.

Basically, Hasbro Interactive owns the rights to X-Com. I've tried contacting them over the phone about it and spent as long as 3 hours getting transferred from person to person long distance trying to find out what's happening with those rights but they aren't talking. Got transferred from Hasbro to Infogrames to Microprose...no one knows anything or if they do they aren't talking. X-Com is sasdly a dead franchise with from what I understand, no plans for resurrection.

I hadn't read about Laser Squad Nemesis, but it wasn't out a good year ago when I gave up looking for X-Com stuff. That UFO strategy game that came out last year for the PC was a poor substitute :( I guess I'll be getting LSN now!

I'm pretty sure that an Eastern European developer procured the rights to make an Xcom title after the last project that Bethesda was going to publish in NA got canned by Virgin. I haven't heard anything about it since way back, and I'm not even sure that I'm correct. UFO Defense is a frontrunner for my favorite game of all time, so I hope to see the series reborn as well. I'm not holding my breath, though.

I used to pass up copies of X-Com, but now that I enjoy that type of game, I sure wish I could find one.

The only two longbox PS games that I want are X-Com and Return Fire. They never turn up in the wild anymore.

Let me just say I LOVE X-Com SOOOO much!

anyhoo..

Heres another site (http://www.xcomufo.com/)(<Link) that has some intersting stuff

Such as UFO2000 which is a turn based online battle with X-com graphics and rules. It's one on one only but still fun.

Fixes to allow you to play X-com on a WinXp computer (you can even D/L the game from there)

plus game music and all kinds of other stuff

Now I know of a site that has a 3D X-com in the works (they only have screen shots so far) but I can't pull it up on a google so I'll have to link it when I get home.

Long Live X-Com!

Hey I found that 3D X-com Remake link for those intersted

http://ufo.myexp.de/

It was on the site I linked to earler. they even have a working tech Demo :D

For those of you like me that are dying to play X-Com UFO Defense or Terror From the Deep on a new PC...here's how!:

First, download X-Com: UFO Defense (DOS version) HERE (http://retrogames.intranet.hu/sub/ufo1.zip)

You must type in the number and hit the button to start the DL (sorry it's in Hungarian!)

Next go HERE (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1) and download DOSBox V. 0.63 for Windows.

Install DOSBox on your PC. Then unzip the X-Com zip from the Hungarian site to a file folder of your choosing. I used c:\XCom

Run DOSBox and type in

mount c c:\XCom

where "XCom" is the name of the drive you unzipped the game to. You do NOT need to install the DOS version of the game in your PC.

Now, in the directory for Xcom, simply type "UFO" and hit Enter! The game should run fine. When it asks for a code prompt, just hit enter, as the game is already cracked!

There is a method to make the game full screen and to speed it up too, working on the tweaks. If anyone is interested, I'll post it here! :)

or you could.... you know D/L it from here.

http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4966

fixes and all ;)

just make sure to Run XCOM1FIX.EXE if you are using Windows 2000/ME/XP

BTW I thought the earler site had it for D/L I was wrong but still very much worth a look.

Heh...figures. When last I looked, the X-Coms weren't abandonware and there was no patch for the CE (which I have, as well as all the originals) for 98-XP. Never did get that sucker working...now it's time for some FUN! :D

Anybody looking for an updated X-Com should look into UFO: Aftermath. I've yet to play it myself, but it's described as a spiritual successor to X-Com. Gamerankings shows scores from 40% to about 85%, with an average of about 72%.

Jagged Alliance (1 or 2) reeks of X-Com, as well, though it is a bit dated now as well.

I've also been considering Shadow Vault, though from what I've heard, it's not so much X-Com as it is Fallout Tactics (both in theme and gameplay).

Jagged Alliance was cool but I haven't REALLY gotten into it yet. From everything I heard, UFO Aftermath was a total stinker though...I avoided it after reading some of the major differences...

And yay! You can DL X-Com: Terror From the Deep CE too! Now I can finally play the Windows tweaked special editions easily! So happy!

LOL

I'm Glad :D

anyhoo...

I've played UFO aftermath and yes the AI and Path Finding SUCKS! but I belive there is mods and fixes for that. From what I've heard there are a few Diehards out there tring to make it worth something. all and all though it just made me wish I could play an updated X-com.

this is probably the only thing that will ever be as good as the original xcom. Its not a remake of xcom, but basically the exact original with updated graphics(someone still owns the xcom name).. It seems to have the most progress out of any of the other xcom remakes. They talked xenocide in one of the cmg's awhile ago as probably being the only xcom related thing be any good since ufo defense/terror from the deep. Ive been waiting about 2 years for this game to finish, i always check up on it every few months everytime i get in my xcom phase, but progress is going pretty slow. Go ahead and check this out for the cool pics, but another that, the original xcom game is the only thing worth playing as of now.

I think I've played a Demo of that. It was in german'ish. Pretty good from the things I had seen.

Hey would anyone happen to know of a Palm version Of X-com? I found a RPG'ish one (http://www.palmgamingworld.com/rpg/ufo_legacy.shtml)(<Link) awhile back But I can't really get into it.

I know they managed to get one to work for Pocket PC (http://www.pdarcade.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2119) but it's in russian :(

Now here's the real kicker: is there a Moslo program for windows that would slow down that XCom XP fix? It's still operating at a blazing speed.

The CE version that you DL from the Underdogs? There's a speed control inside the game for the battle section, but I don't think there's anything else.... runs fine on my 2 Ghz system...not too too fast.

Go there for patches for the CE.

I am a HUGE X-Com fan. There are a number of X-Com games, although not many play like the original X-Com.

X-Com : UFO Defense
X-Com : Terror from the Deep (Just like the first, only underwater)
X-Com : Apocalypse (Decent title that took place in a single city and combined some RTS elements)
X-Com : Interceptor (Fun title that had you piloting a spacecraft and downing alien UFOs a la Wing Commander)
X-Com : Enforcer (Don't bother acknowledging it's existence. Action title, no strategy involved)
X-Com : First Alien Invasion (Remake of the original to be played via e-mail)

Games in the vein :
Laser Squad Nemesis
Silent Storm
UFO : Aftermath
UFO : Aftershock (upcoming sequel to above)
Jagged Alliance series

X-Com : Alliance was to be a squad based shooter like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, etc. I nearly wept when the game was cancelled and the technology was used for the abomination that was X-Com : Enforcer. Here's the article for what could have been :

I actually thought X-Com: Enforcer was an above-average action game, just a monstrosity of a product to tag the X-Com brand on. I still haven't put X-Com Interceptor back on my computer...
