View Full Version : Intentional misspelling in game titles

I've been thinking about the fact that Berzerk is spelled differently from the actual word, berserk. I wonder which is the more prevailent spelling now? I know i always feel like typing berzerk instead of berserk. Was this the first game to do this? What are some other games to do this, and why? Did it go over well, is it more commonly spelled incorecctly now, etc? I see that I don't have much of a topic here but it's been nagging at my brain and I figured someone might have an interesting take on the discussion.

Oh, and Xtreme is too easy. The only game I ever bought with that in it is DOA beach volleyball, and I had to think hard about it, the xtreme almost made me not get it. But that's more anger to xtreme marketing specifically.

Wow, how'd I miss that? I was amused how most of the c's in themost recent game were repalced with k's, but not all of them...I wonder if it's based on if it's a hard or soft C.

Can't forget Frogger 2: Threeedeep!

What the hell is a "Threeedeep" anyway?

Frogs are known for their prodigious sexual appetites...I'll leave it at that LOL

Well, here's one. Phantasy Star. :O

So far we've just hit the basic ones. How about Dynamite Deka, Dynamite Dux, Dynamite Heddy...Hippodrome isn't misspelled, but I swear Holosseum is a made-up word (and both games are awful!)

Way to derail my own topic!

I think it's become more important to do so since the rise of the web. The term "mortal combat" returns almost 750,000 hits, most of which have nothing to do with the game. "mortal kombat", on the other hand, returns 1.5 million hits, ALL of which have to do with the game. A simple misspelling helps make your product easier to find on the web. If you've ever tried to do a google search on a game, band, movie or television show with a plain name, you know how hard it is to find information (like on the bands "Arcade" and "The The").

On the contrary, it is great. At least, I think it is. Be prepared for a pretty steep learning curve after a few levels, though. :P

Damn I.Q.
JUST because of that game, Im always trying to spell cube wrong. Every time I type "GC" I wonder, for a second, why Nintendo spelled "qube" wrong.
There should be one or two more I.Q.s comming. *I.Q. Mania* and *Intelligent License*. I could be wrong about either or both of them but that *Intelligent License* sure as hell looks like an IQ sequel to me. Maybe *I.Q. Mania* will be the stateside title for *Intelligent License*. According to 1up.com, Sony also applied for trademark of *XI Colosseum*...XI is Japans title for Devil Dice (or Bombastic as you may know it).
**Good call, Dimitri. IQ was awesome!

So back on topic...
BreakThru
Kid Kool

You think that stuff's hard? I really like a punk band named "All". It's near impossible to find ANYTHING by them.

Ironically, they were spawned from Descendents, who have an intentionally misspelled name.

Perhaps, but I doubt this had anything to do with the decision on Mortal Kombat. When that was first conceived, the internet had nowehere near the reach that it does now, and I doubt that anyone was really thinking of web-strategies when deciding game names back then ...
