OK, in another topic, someone compared the PSP to Game Gear, with its better graphics, short battery life (I charged my DS before Thanksgiving, and didn't have to recharge until this month, PSP won't be able to do that.) etc.

I've been thinking about this and I agree with the idea. Now that PSP has Grand Theft Auto, remember how Game Gear had a few popular series (Sonic was extremely popular, at least here in the US,) and now there's rumors the PSP will have a TV tuner, just like a certain other system.

Game Boy had bad graphics, OK so DS's graphics aren't "bad," as it can do pretty much anything a Nintendo 64 could do, but PSP's graphics are better, but DS succeeds where Game Boy did, in the games department. Already DS has exclusive Castlevanias and Final Fantasies, Dragon Quest, and let's not forget THE portable powerhouse, Pokemon.

PSP has fewer big releases on the way. There's Metal Gear Acid, Grand Theft Auto, tales of Eternia (It'll be popular in Japan at least) and that's basically it.

Whoa....DS has Dragon Quest? When did this happen? :D

Anyway, im not entirely sure I agree with the people that say PSP is the equvilant to the Game Gear. I really think that the PSP is going to make a big long lasting impact on the handheld market. :)

Game Gear lasted a long time, it lasted from 1991-1996, but never managed to reach the Game Boy's popularity. Nintendo IS in for a fight, but I think they'll manage to win this, despite people expecting the PSP to do so much better than the DS.

Considering that the GameBoy Evolution is rumoured to be released next year. The Evolution is supposed to be the competition for the PSP where as the DS is some odd Nintendo side project.

I've been wondering the exact same thing for a while now. Like the Game Gear, the PSP seems to have somewhat better specs, as well as some major flaws (fragile, dead pixels, buttons overlapping the screen). Perhaps a comparison to Game Gear isn't too far off.

I've heard rumors on the evolution, and yes, nintendo is still on cartidges/cards.

But i also heard somewhere that nintendo has got an agreement with frahnhouwer (??? the mp3 guys) and the divx crew, so it may not be all that hard for them to get support from 3rd parties who demand a video playing machine. Also, consider that many mp3 decoders on a chip are actually very cheap (20$ to consumer), wich could give them a very good bang per buck music backup, considering that on the psone, almost all game music and videos were about 60% of a disc, with dedicated harware to decode/overlay compressed video and audio, a 1GB card would suffice to most.

Any cuestions, comments?
