View Full Version : NES Multicart question

I found what I think is an nes multicart at a used bookstore a little while ago and have been unsuccessful in making the thing work. I would really like to play it, but all it does when I load it up is cause my NES to blink. It's not a system based problem cause both the nes' in my room usually boot up games with no problem at all. So, is there something else I need to do for it to work? I remember having a multicart on my first nes years ago, and I believe my dad soldered some kind of wire into it, but I'm not sure why he did that, it was years ago. So anyone got any tips? I tried cleaning it, but I'm not sure on the best method to clean an nes cart.
Here's some pictures....the box doesn't really seem to match up with the cart but that's what it was in....it's about the size of a GBA box.

That might be it. Compare the number of metal connector in the bottom of the cart with another NES game--the famicom has more or less pins or something.

You need to clip your lock out pin. I beleive you can find a "FAQ" on simplynes.com. Very easty to do.
it wil play on a american 72 pin NES.
Edit with linkage
http://simplynes.emucamp.com/
It's under Misc. "Make your NES universal"
I have the same multi myself. If it was smaller, it would not even fit into the cart slot. You may just need a little cleaning as well. Multis are usually a pain to get working.

Looks like the pins do differ a bit....the game will show up for a second, it has the little bubble bobble dragon, and it walks across the screen and it has a selection grid for the games. The one it starts out on is ice climber. I'll try the FAQ you suggested above and see what happens, thanks for the help!

Supervisions are pretty common around the net, but everytime I bid on one on eBay it either gets removed or gets bid too high for me.

3. Popeye
4. Pinball
5. Tennis
6. Donkey Kong
7. Yie Ar Kung Fu
8. Mappy (woohoo!)
9. Baseball
10. Ice Climber

17. Exerion
18. Sky Destroyer
19. Circus Charlie (sweeeeet)

Well, I'm set. That's a pretty sweet mix. I also got a gradius II pirate cart at the same place and it works great as well. Thanks for the help.

Thats pretty cool I gota similar one I hope to get working.
Did you give circus charlie a "sweeet"?
Even bombed or high as a kite, No one I know would play Circus Charlie for more than 20 seconds.

lol, it was more for the nostalgia factor than the gameplay. Most of those games I had on my old multicart (999 in 1 or whatever it was) so it was cool to have em again.

CC isn't amazing, but it's a fun little play through. I'm really enjoying mappy, love that game =D. Thanks again, I'm enjoying it.
I don't think that you needed to modify your NES to play it, actually. I own a Supervision cartridge and I didn't need to mod my NES to play it. Supervision pirates are NTSC, so they will run fine in an American NES.

I dunno, I tried it various times and cleaned it a few as well and nothing worked. The game would start up and do the blinking problem. After clipping off the chip on the board it worked without a problem first try.

NEs multi carts are pretty cool. i like the ones that differ from the usual ones with the same crap on it. like one i have has pac-land, and some action 52 quality games, and know of someone that has a cart with some pretty fun unique games (moai kun or something similar was the name i think, neat little puzzler :D)

My friend had several multi-carts with a famicom/NES converter in the early 90's. They were a blast. One of them had Ninja Gaiden 3, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Adventure Island 2, and some other great ones.
Was Macross disappointing to you Hellvin?

I have heard of some rare pirates that demand the console be modded or be inserted in a pirate console. However, since my console has been modded for yearts, I don't know if I have any because all of them work!

So it only has 20 games? Have you tried turning it on, then turning the power off and immediately turning the power back on again? Two of my multi's have a 'Side B' that you can only access with a hard reset like that.

Nope, looks like it only has 20 games. Oh well, it's still a blast. Sigh...how I wish I had my old one again, I'd almost never need to change carts =D.

I've been looking for that particular cart for 5 years; I had it when I was young and it has a hack for the game chubby cherub called king of ghosts which I couldn't stop playing. A year ago, when I saw what I thought was that game I picked it up but was disapointed to see that the ghost had been replaced with some fat angel.
The box to mine was different though so they could be different multicarts with the same label.

Only 20 games?? That is alot of games if they are 20 diffrent games. Mutli-cartridges usualy dont have this many diffrent games.

The one I had when I was a kid that my dad bought for me on a business trip had almost the EXACT label and cart color and it was called 999 in 1. And it had that many games selections on it. It was AWESOME. There were actually probably about in reality 150-200 games on it (which yeah, is still A LOT) but a ton of selections were variations/different levels. Some of the games I remember are balloon fight, arabian, pooyan, mappy, adventure island, some ikari warriors like game that took place in medieval times, donkey kong 1-3, popeye.......man it was awesome.

SuperVision multi's are overall good multicarts, i have quite a few pirates and i must say SV carts have cool games on it.
Ofcourse there are some very commons on them too but still i was surprised how good they are.

No.. these 999 in 1 doesnt have that many games. It wasnt possible to have 150 diffrent games on 1 cartridge, it was not enough space.
I have many multi cartridges, and its usualy.. i would guess an average about 10 diffrent games on each. I have 1 cartridge that have maybe 20-30 diffrent games.
The biggest multi cartridge i have, got 9999999 in 1. Takes forever to scroll through all the "games".

30 games might work :)
Atleast what i know its impossible to have 100+ NES games on 1 cartridge. Remember a friend borrowed the multi cartridge with Contra on it :) Was cool! He also borrowed one with Ninja Gaiden 2 i think.
I bet with todays technoligy you can make a NES cartridge that have 500+ games on it. Would have been cool to have the knowledge to do so. If i did i would probly try to make one hehe :)

That's not entirely true. I've seen ones that, while they may not have as many UNIQUE games as they promise, have around 100 or more truly different games.

I have the NES pirate "Golden Game 260-in-1" -- there might not be 260 individual games on that cart, but it still has about 105. So it is possible to have around 100 individual games on a single NES cart.
My copy is not exactly in pristine condition, but this is a very cool cart nonetheless...

Yeah, the old cart I had defenitely had at least 30 - 80 unique games. I just remember it being A LOT. I'm also kind curious about the box I have....it says video dean video computer or something like that and shows a ton of 2600 box covers...there hasnt ever been some nes cart with 2600 games on it has there? Maybe I'll have to recheck the store since I'm off tomorrow.

Ya, I don't know what Jajaja is talking about. I have 6 NES multicarts and the smallest one has 31 unique games. The largest one has 101 unique games. It's called "Powerful 250 in 1" but 150 of the selections are hacks. Some of the hacks are really weird too like SMB swim version where you swim every single level and a graphic hack of SMB using SMB2J graphics, but otherwise faithful to the original.

There's a 119-in one and a 260-in-one I know for a FACT that had about 100 games in them each. They were small games, mind you. Usually they were every early "black box" Nintendo title (this includes yer action series, sports series, light gun and programmable series). Then they would have every pre-Track and Field Konami game, those which had the old Konami logo that were all arcade ports or really bad games. Then all the early Namco games...etc. See, the point is, you probably can fit 100 commercial games on a NES cart (these were on a Famicom cart) if you put an 8-meg chip in there. They just have to be really small games. Usually the most complex game you would see on those was Super Mario Brothers.

Ye.. thats what im saying. As i already mentioned, Action 52 have 52 diffrent games in 1, but these games are the worse. So ~100 small and "homemade" games might fit on 1 cartridge, but not 100 commersial games. As you said, the most complex game was Super Mario Bros.

Is it a black cartridge? And on the menu its Adventure Island music and 2 snails that crawls around? I acctualy have this game and i just tried it again.
It acctualy had alot of diffrent game, most from the black series. There are also so games i never seen before, most likely famicom games or homemade.
If its over 100 diffrent games im not sure (didnt count), but i would guess its over 50 atleast. The cartridge is also pretty heavy compared to normal NES cartridges.
So i admit, i didnt know you could fit this much (altho not 100 ;)) games on 1 cartridge, and it was under my nose all the time hehe :)
Damnit.. i have to count all games just to check if its not 100. I might be wrong.

Ok, tried the games now.. Its 106 diffrent games acctualy! Damn.. didnt know this :) Altho.. maybe 2-3 are homemade, but still over 100.
It have games like dr. mario, paperboy, adventure island, puzznic also.
And super mario bros 1, mario bros, donkey kong 1, 3 and jr, duck hunt, hogans alley, wild gunman, balloon fight, pinball etc etc..

But all the games on the 260-in-1 are also commersial, just realy old ones.

I have many mulitcarts for the NTSC console. I have never tried them on anything but a top-loader though!
I have them with anywhere from 2 games to 120. On the higher number carts, it usually has about 80 games and then variations of them (faster, garbled, etc.)
I have an exact copy of that game you have (same listing of games, same menu type), but it's made by ECS (made lot's of boot carts and multi carts)

Yep, the 260-in-1 has about 100-105 individual, commercial games, although very early ones (SMB, Pinball, Tennis, Baseball, etc. but also plenty of arcade conversions). I found it at a local pawn shop...

Yes, that's exactly the cart I'm talking about! :) You may not have heard of a lot of the games on there before because many of them weren't released outside of Japan, and were some of the original slew of third party Famicom titles. And yes, some of them suck, but some of them are really cool (we in America never saw Devil World, for example. That one was a bit too unChristian I suppose. Did anybody notice that the dino in that game is an early Yoshi? He pops out of an egg and has the same sound effect as Yoshi does when he hatches--that game may not be on the 260 in one cart, but it is on others.)
Are there any multi cartridges that have alot of newer commersial games?
Yes, tons. There tends to be less games in these; 8 or 11. Sometimes 4 out of the 11 are different variations of Contra (which seems to show up in a LOT of them). As I've mentioned before, I've seen one with Ninja Gaiden III, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Adventure Island II, SCAT (called something else in Japan), and Shadow of the Ninja. All of the carts like this that I've come in contact with over the years always have commercial games on them, but never games that used a battery (so, Zelda, Crystalis, or Maniac Mansion are out). Action 52 is just an abomination in general, and doesn't really reflect how cool some of the other multi-carts there are.
BTW--those of you with access to the 260-in-one Adventure Island hack cart should hunt for a game on there called "Wildball". It's strip rock-paper-scissors, and it's really creepy to see anime porn on the NES. REALLY creepy.

Hahaha yes, Wildball :) I played through all 106 games earlier today, just to check if it was 106 diffrent games.
I got the panties off, but not the bra hehe :P Was too fast at the end.
You know what i shall search for on Ebay to find the multi NES cartridges with new commersial games? I would realy like to try one.

Somebody mentioned their multicarts having a B-side...that's kind of how the more advanced carts work (like the ones you're looking for)...you push reset and a new title screen pops up. Crazy!

In case you didn't know. The "Golden Cassette Series 260-in-1" cart (it's dark grey or black anyway) has a converter inside.

Yah, I have some 2 in one carts that are like that. One title and then the other when you push reset!
Also I have some that won't work (white screen) till you push reset! Why? I have no idea.

I love "Circus Chablie". I used to have some other circus game for NES and I thought it was pretty cool. I loaned it to my friends and they hated it. So, I'm over my friends playing the game and I press up to go inside the circus tents. They have mini games in there. They didn't know you go in them.
Whoever said most multicarts contain less than 20 games: Most multicarts I see contain more than 20. I've owned a few in my life, but sold them at one time or another. Everyone I've had was more than 20 different games. Most of the cartridges contained the same games, but some of them had one or two different. Somewhere here I might still have my 42 in 1 and I still have my 84 in 1 and might still have a 64 in 1 here.
The 42 in 1 was mysterious. You turned it on and got 20 in 1, turned it off and on and got 22 in 1.. that's not so mysterious. I know a few carts that do that, but the weird part was.. you know sometimes you don't get the NES cart in right and weird stuff pops up on the screen?! Sometimes I'd get TOTALLY different menus to pop up! Totally different graphics and stuff! Only thing is it was frozen so I couldn't do anything!
Would have loved to get a ROM dump of the stuff on that cart.

To be honest, until Hellvin put up this post, I've never seen a multicart in an actual NTSC cart. The only times I saw the multicarts were in Famicom carts brought over from Vietnam, and we used a "Honeybee" converter to play them.
Did any of you guys actually buy these NES multicarts new? If so, where did you buy them? I never saw them, ever.

I only hang on to multi's if they are in an NES cart casing. I didn't buy any new, but my 42 in 1 has it's original price tag: $199.00 at a Co-op store (I don't know if these stores exist in the US). Can you imagine paying that much for a NES pirate? In their defence, this cart does have some games that aren't mapper 0 (ie: Adventure Island, Gradius, Goonies, etc) so it's an awesome multi, but still... two hundred bucks! @_@

I used to have a 191-1 that only had 51 repeats on it. I wish I still had that multi. I believe it was made by Spica.
I need to get pics of my multis. I have around 10 NES and 20 Fami multis.
