Not sure if there are any topics like this, if so I apoligize.

Any good ones out there, that are truely worth importing? Haven't heard of too many so let me know. :)

Outside of that, only suggestion I have is Virtual Pro Wrestling 2.

Sin and Punishment for the last time and for the love that is gaming....

One you should definately pick up is Denryuu IraIra-Bou (Irritating Stick). Really simple, fun (yet irritating) game (with great control with the N64 controller, and a psychotic announcer). Was also released in the US on the Playstation (couldn't find any screenshots of the N64 version, but here's a LINK (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpagesscreens/197656.asp) to the PSone screenshots).

Ignore any bad ratings you see. They are unwarranted.

I take it that this is unrelated to The Irritating Maze, by SNK?

I'm not sure. It's like one of those old style electrified maze games. You have a wooden or metal stick, and you have to make your way through the maze without touching the electrified edges (kinda like Operation, except with discomfort).

All three are the same game, AFAIK. I believe they were all developed by Saurus, but I'm not entirely sure about the N64 one...

We have a forum specifically for discussing imports, you'll get good feedback there.

Moving this over.

Just curious, what kind of converter do you use to play imports on an N64?

If you have a 4.5mm gamebit, you can just open up the N64 and remove a little plastic piece. The region lock out on the N64 is similar to that of the SNES, that is, it is only a physical (not software) barier.

I didn't have the tool, so I just cut out the tabs. A GameShark works for most of the earlier games as well.

WOW! Too bad they didn't make it that easy for the SNES! (not that the SNES is really that hard to mod if you wanna go that route) But are there any converter carts for it anyway, for those who didn't want to void their warranties? (not that there's anyone left with a valid warranty anymore) I'm just curious about all this. I don't have an N64 anymore, but I kinda have a collection of converter carts going on now, so it might be fun to get one just to have it. And who knows, it may be worth getting an N64 again for some good imports for it, if they have any that I'd be interested in. I kinda miss my N64. I sold it and all my games for it several years ago. Then I sorta inherited one and a few games for it, and I sold it a few years ago too. So maybe the 3rd time would be the charm, and I'd actually keep one next time. It does have alot of great games for it, they were just too expensive.

Actually, I'd say it's considerably harder to mod a N64 than a SNES. The tabs in the N64 are at the corners, while the ones in the SNES are further in. You can get a pair of pliers wrapped around the SNES tabs and work at them until you got them removed. It's a bit slow, but I whittled away the tabs in two different SNES models and both jobs ended up looking quite clean and nice. The N64 was a lot harder. Not only can you not get a good grip around them, but the plastic also appears to be firmer. I worked at them with all the tools I could find, but I was getting nowhere. Ultimately, my boyfriend melted the tabs away with a soldering iron. Looks kind of nasty on the inside and the flaps for the slot got tiny melt marks in them, but it worked out okay.

As for the Irritating Stick/Maze games, I don't believe they're the same games, but they're all based on the same old Japanese game show. Not sure if they're made by the same developer.

And for recommendations... I love all the N64 imports I have, but it all depends on if you're interested in the genres and how much Japanese text you can tolerate:

Sin & Punishment - Great 3D rail shooter by Treasure with some of the best graphics ever seen on the N64. You can even understand the (corny) plot since the voices are in English.

Wonder Project J2 - Even better than the first WPJ, you raise a robot girl to basically be human. It's not one of those crappy robot girl hentai games; it's actually very sweet and touching and has beautiful art and endearing characters. It's a point-and-click style game with a lot of text, but Japanese isn't required if you don't mind using an FAQ.

Custom Robo - Great Virtual On mecha fighting game in a Pokemon-style RPG plot setting. The world is small, so it's not hard to find where you need to go and get on with the action battles. :)

Getter Love - One of the best dating sims I've ever played, you actually have to COMPETE with others to get a girlfriend. It makes for an insane 4-player game, but it's really fun as a single-player game too. Really pretty 2D art and some 3D graphics thrown in too. It's a very silly, funny game with dancing pandas and ganguro girls and such. :P

Bomberman 64 - Traditional 2D Bomberman. That's about all that needs to be said. There are four modes - classic, Panic Bomber, a Sega Swirl style game, and Bomberman Park filled with mini games that are actually fun. Not the greatest version of Panic Bomber and I'm not a Sega Swirl fan, but the other two keep you playing for a long time. As expected, there are also great 4-player battles.

As a side note, all of these have English FAQs except Custom Robo and Bomberman 64, which are fairly easy to play even without knowledge of Japanese. Also, both of those series have been in English before, so being familiar with those games can help a lot.

Yeah, the N64 is way harder to mod because the plastic is much harder and positioned in a more difficult spot to reach.

And Sin & Punishment is the only import I have for the N64...so worth it tho!

I also have heard that the N64 version is superior mostly due to the fact that the resolution is lower, thus making it easier to spot threats, unlike in the higher resolution Dreamcast version. Though I also know the game had a very limited run of around 10,000 or so.

N64 version is definitely desirable. The graphics are a bit simpler to keep it all moving in a satisfying speed but most importantly in this original version you have to collect the fruits to keep your big blast going. Whether this is yay or boo compared to the DC version is your call.

You know you do not need to modify your N64, if you get a Gamebit you can pull apart the N64 cart and replace the Japanese cart back with an American one so that it will fit nicely in the US cart slot. I am sure that there are a lot of cheap US N64 games that would be prepared to give their lives for such a nobel cause. :)

Bangai-O for N64 doesn't seem too expensive...if you're thinking about it, then, you probably should get it. $50/complete on eBay, roughly (maybe up to $60), which isn't bad for something rather rare/uncommon.

Actually, last time I saw it it wasn't too bad! Take a look at eBay. Darn spendy for an N64 game, but not bad considering it's one of Treasure's most playable games (which means, of course, that it's insanely good).

Not to make a +1, but Sin & Punishment is truly fantastic. Everyone deserves to have a go at it. It really doesn't get much better. It also has a very cool art style and soundtrack, typical of most Treasure games.

Sin and Punishment is an absolute must-have.

I like the Doraemon games. They gave me my fix of 3D platforming after I had beaten Mario 64 a bazillion times...

Evangelion 64 is worth owning.

Pikachu Genki De Chu is actually a pretty good way to practice your Japanese, lol. If you're into that kind of thing....

Mario 64 "Shindou" version uses the rumble pak, and was only available there. I consider this a must-have due to my Mario 64 obsession. I believe that either Waverace or Pilotwings (possibly both) were released in "Shindou" versions as well....
