View Full Version : In what games may you kill animals?

I'm not talking about the monsters in horor games or creatures like minotaurs or mythical beasts.
In San Andreas, there were hawks flying overhead, which I shot and they disappeared. I was disappointed that they didn't fall and I could look at their dead carcases, but at least I could kill them.
I think a few games like Rush 'N Attack had you kill dogs, and I remember Operation Thunderbolt rewarded the player for shooting stray dogs and cats with magazines, grenades, etc., but they still didn't die which is lame.
I'd like to see more animal deaths in games.
And for those who think I'm a sicko, I bet not all of you are vegetarians and probably have no qualms about graphically killing a person in a game, so keep that in mind before you flame me.

The recently released Resident Evil 4 had you killin' animals.
You can smack your neighbors/animals in Animal Crossing with the net. But you can't kill them. :(
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Wolfenstein 3D-Dogs on the PC/GBA version, rats on the Super NES.
Most any RPG ever made-Evil animals galore!
Ninja Gaiden series-Those f#$%ing birds!
Guerilla War-Kill a rat, get a 1,000 point bonus. Che and Fidel must hate them rodents. ;)

King's Quest 1. Instead of showing the goat the carrot so it would help you kill the troll, you could stab it to death with the freaking dagger. So horrible.

Duck Hunt.
But honestly, I bet a new Duck Hunt game would generate more controversy than a new GTA game. That's pathetic.
EDIT: Also Safari Hunt.

Well. I wish that I could say Smuggler's Run, but those damn animals just won't. stay. DEAD!
You have to admit, when those animals fly, they really fly (especially with gravity cheats on)!!! I just love how limp their bodies go (limbs a floppin' around and all)!!!

let's just talk about innocent animals for a minute.
You can kill crows in Soul Reaver 2 (but on most copies it activates a game destroying glitch).
You can kill shaft rats and ravens in Metal Gear Solid.
You can pick off high flying birds in Metroid Prime (and they explode).
You can shoot birds in Half-Life 2, and they drop to the ground, where you can then take a close-up look at the corpse.

In either Cruis'n World or Cruis'n Exotica you could run over zebras and they'd explode. O_O

The Tomb Raider games... Animals galore to kill. But only because they're trying to kill you for some reason.
Then there's Super Mario Bros. Turtle fanatics are still bitching.

Heh... Konami has done much more to enrage PETA over the years. In Metal Gear Solid, you could blow up rats and kill wolves. You get to shoot at seagulls in Metal Gear Solid 2, which is always much fun. However, in Metal Gear Solid 3, it's imperative that you kill animals for the benefit of your stamina... and boy, in this game, there's enough meat here for a banquet. :D

In Halo 2 there are birds you can splatter (by shooting them).
Also there are hunting specific games, but they dont really deserve to be mentioned.
Honestly, its hard to draw the line between animal and monster in most video games.
I could say that in Centipede you kill centipedes and spiders, but I'm not sure if they are supposed to be normal bugs or their horribly mutated cousins.

Activision's 'Hunter' for the Amiga - while it's not necessary as far as the game goes, you're able to unleash the whole range of weaponary against the various cows, bulls, rabbits, seagulls, sharks and probably other things I've forgotten, if you so desire.

My favorite is in Ice Trek. In the first stage you have to navigate around these charging caribou. You *can* draw your axe and cut down a caribou that you won't be able to dodge (or just for fun) but if you do, some wilderness God appears and fires a rather accurate arrow your way. You *can* dodge the arrow but it's tougher than the caribou.
See? Killing animals is wrong.
Also, has anyone mentioned the Cabala series yet? The entire purpose of the game is to kill as many animals as you can. If hunting is your thing, I'm pretty sure this is why the series exists.

Dear Sir or Madam:
Thank you very much for those links. I was wrong and I now see the error or my ways. Never again will I eat meat, wear leather, or consume any dairy products.
Furthermore, I feel that my very suggestion that harming animals should be more prevalent in games was no doubt a sign of a serious underlying psychiatric condition.
I now realize that since most if not all game companies have at least some form of killing a non-human, I am boycotting all video games and the companys that produce them (including Microsoft).
I cannot thank you enough. As soon as I am released from the local mental hospital, I will send you a big basket of organically grown fruit.

I was always disappointed with Hard Drivin'. Take the corner too wide and you would smash into a cow. Instead of exploding, all he did was Moo.
Not nearly as fullfilling as stabbing crocodiles in the mouth and watching them disappear, a'la Jungle Hunt.
I remember there was either a weapon or a code in Hexen where you could turn your opponent into a chicken, at which point you would begin chasing him around the playfield, shooting him in his chicken ass, sending feathers flying everywhere. Good times.

If you consider insects animals that gives you a couple hundred choices right there.
There are lots of games in which you kill bats. I guess bats are considered "bad" animals, and are therefore OK to kill.

Oregon Trail is the first game that came to mind for me too. :) Not only is it fun, but it's purposeful killing too. You have to eat to survive, and that's the reason you kill them. I don't like games where you can kill completely innocent animals with no consequences and no reason for doing such. In most games, the animals are bad guys that try to kill you, so I'm not bothered by that. Other games, like Zelda with the chickens, the animals get their revenge, so that's cool too.
And before anyone accuses me of being some hippie, vegan, PETA freak, I feel the same about games where you can kill completely innocent people for no good reason and with no consequences. Maybe it's just me, but I like to be a good guy in games, a hero kind of character. When they give me the option of killing people or animals for no reason, I just don't do it.

Yeah someone already mentioned it and I was gonna say...you can kill deer, bison, sheep in Age of Empires / AOE2.
Unreal allowed you to kill those crazy bunny creatures along with the birds I believe.
Does Morrowind have animals you can kill?
Don't forget Black & White for the PC - sacrificing animals on your altar is definitely one way to kill 'em.
Thief: Deadly Shadows and Deus Ex 1 & 2 let you kill the rats that are running around. In fact, in Thief it's sometimes *good* to kill the rats because if you step around them and they squeal it could alert the guards.
I believe the Ultima games for PC - at least VII did, can't quite remember on the others - allowed you to kill cows, sheep, etc. and take juicy steaks right from 'em. MMMM!
That's about as many as I can think of...

I can understand the use of animals for food and clothing
OK, OK. I get it. It's OK to kill SOME animals, provided it's for food and clothing.
Never mind that vitamin and soy products provide all the nutrition and protein needed for homo sapiens.
Forget the evidence that supports that our bodies were never really too well-equipped to process meat in the first place.
Forget that canvas, hemp and synthetics are just as good as the hides of animals for clothing.
Sure, it's OK, perfectly OK to use animals for food and clothing. Nothing is wrong with fur coats or keeping cows in pens so that they can't do anything but suffer just so we can eat veal. KFC's chickens are also tortured, but hey, I guess you can understand that as well.
BUT me wanting to see a dead animal for entertainment value????
Christ! I'm having myself committed.
Do you feel the same way about seeing dead people for entertainment value?
We are primates and fall into the "animal" category, after all.
I bet you wouldn't give a rat's ass if a game showed dead ants or spiders or cockroaches, and yet insects and arachnids are undeniably part of the animal kingdom.
You can put me down all you want, but keep in mind we all have our double standards when it comes to animals.

Interesting links. What I'd like to know is: What if you have a child who is too timid and needs to be more aggressive in his/her behavior? Wouldn't these reports suggest that child experience more violence in their media? It's an aggressive world! Why should a timid child have to go through life that way when we could easily aggro them up with a few levels of Splatterhouse?
Just a thought.
