@Gunpanther: What does the aftermarket value of a game have to do with anything here?
Actually, nothing. I just thought I'd mention the fact that even though these EA sports games can be pretty fun (sometimes), they hold no collector's value later, compared to games from other genres. (RPGs especially skyrocket in price)

EA has effectively destroyed most of our favorite sports franchies in the course of two weeks. I don't think there's any reason anyone shouldn't be upset.
It's a matter of opinion. I love sports games, but do I care if I never purchase another one again? Nope.
Either way, it spells certain doom for a small developer that made a fantastic line of sports games and was able to take on the current behemoth for but one season before the almighty dollar won again.
Sega is small? And what does Sega's move to acquire MLB mean to you?
The small guys always offer innovation and originality, and while NFL 2k5 was certainly neither of those, it was a fantastic game. Sega Sports Football 2006 will be a fantastic game as well, but it won't sell for shit, even at a bargain $20, and that'll be that, hell, if they even make the game.
Come off it - nobody *always* offers innovation and originality. Sega has as many sequels as the next guy.
I take it by your statement that you won't buy their 2006 football game, should they make one? And you think the rest of the Sega Sports die hards aren't going to purchase it? And you don't think Sega is clever enough to incorporate functionality into their games that will allow you to import proper names? Or something similar?
Shouldn't you wait until you see their product to decide if it's going to fail?
And can't they succeed without sports games anyway - it's not like big developers like Nintendo have to make NFL games in order to turn a profit.
It's all about being unable to make a decision. We no longer have a decision between 989, EA, MS, and Sega, now it's EA NFL or nothing. While Madden certainly isn't a bad game by any means, it was never my first choice after NFL 2k for Dreamcast. It still isn't my first choice, but now it's my only choice and I'll likely be putting sports games behind me entirely from here on out because of EA.
I like being able to make decisions, especially with baseball games (which Sega is taking away from me, not EA). Am I disappointed? Sure. Am I upset? Nope. If I don't like their game I just won't buy it. Not having a new MLB game isn't going to *kill* me, as I can always play an older one, and it's not like there aren't dozens of other genres and games out there for me to play.

The ironic thing is anytime this comes up, a vast majority of the people getting all bent out of shape have never and will never buy a sports game in their life.
Ding ding ding!
There's nothing lamer than a person who *hates* something despite the fact that they've never actually experienced it.
